2.1 BEDMAS

You might remember that certain operations need to happen before others. We use the useful mnemonic
BEDMAS to help us organize it. We will review this below.

Theorem 2.1 There is a special exception to the BEDMAS rule with respect to multiplication/division and
addition/subtraction. For expressions that have only addition and subtraction as operations, we read it from
left to right. For expressions that have only multiplication and division, we also read it from left to right.

Example 2.2 Evaluate 5 − (−4) + 2 − 1 + 10 =

Example 2.3 Evaluate 6 × 2 ÷ 3 × 3 =

2.1.1 Multiplying & Dividing Integers

Lemma 2.4 When multiplying or dividing a positive number by a negative number, the resulting
answer will always be . When multiplying or dividing a negative number by a negative
number, the answer will always be .

Example 2.5 Evaluate (−36) ÷ (9) × (−2) ÷ (−8) =

Example 2.6 Evaluate (45) ÷ (5) ÷ (−3) × (−2) =

2.1.2 Evaluating with BEDMAS

Example 2.7 Evaluate 1 − (−2) × (−3) − 4 − (−5) ÷ 5 − 6 =

Example 2.8 Evaluate −8 − [3 + (−7) − (−2) × 5] =

3 − (−7 × 2) − (−23)
Example 2.9 Evaluate =
(−10) + (−20) ÷ 2
