SPACE—whether physical
or virtual—can have an impact on learning. It can bring people
together; it can
encourage exploration, collaboration, and discussion. Or, space
can carry an
unspoken message of silence and disconnectedness

• The physical aspects of a campus convey nonverbal

messages—
welcoming or discouraging, valuing or disrespecting—
even more powerfully than verbal messages.

• They cited research that links the physical attractiveness and

lighting of a space to the motivation and task performance
of those in the space.
Make Learning Spaces Flexible and
Modular
Make learning spaces more flexible by:
• Installing desks and chairs on casters
• Designing multipurpose working spaces that include
whiteboards, work surfaces, and other tools
• Designing modular classrooms

Connect Classrooms to Public Spaces

• A hallway, common area, or even a stairwell
is a great place to inspire students to learn
outside of class.
• include “sticky spaces” throughout campus—that
is, places where students want to stop as they
walk from classroom to classroom
• It should feel like one cohesive design where every
inch of space provides an opportunity to learn
something new.
Encourage Collaboration Among Students

To support teamwork and socialization, we use design

techniques like:
• Foldable partitions in classrooms
• Whiteboard walls or writable floor-to-ceiling windows
• Shared common rooms
• Comfortable furniture and dining options near collaborative
zones to attract students to these spaces.

OUTDOOR LEARNING SPACES

• Comfortable furnishings, and views of nature in
classrooms
• Color schemes that promote relaxation or focus. Muted
earth tones and shades of green, blue, or brown are
good options for quiet learning spaces
Improve Student Comfort and Focus
• Heating, lighting, noise, air quality, and interior design all
have an effect on student comfort and focus.
• To ensure college and university students more comfortable
More natural daylight and less artificial light
• Natural ventilation (like windows that close and open
automatically) to keep temperatures inside at a comfortable
level and improve air quality.
• Soundproof panels and soft furnishings in high traffic areas
to keep noise levels low in classrooms and study areas.

Find Tech-Friendly Solutions

• Mobile charging stations and desks or chairs with

charging outlets are a great way to support this.
