Curro High school
Capetown, South africa by BPAS Architects
The inspiration for the school's
design was drawn from the
surrounding landscape and the
mountains in the distance, the
color of the canola fields, and
the materiality of existing
structures located on and
around the site. The design
emits an exciting take on form,
texture, and scale.

Concept of the Third Teacher
by Reggio Emilia

Reggio Emilia identifies a 3rd teacher between child,

teacher, and parent: the environment.
The design aims to capture and promote the value of
The Third Teacher in its layout, spatial qualities and
finishes to create a positive, flexible educational
environment.

Gilder Center
GILL, UNITED STATES By Flansburgh Architects
The project’s main purpose is to have a
sustainable design using local, green
materials. To embrace the school’s
engaging academic environment and
beautiful campus, the bright and airy
interior allows for transparent views of
indoor and outdoor areas. These areas
accommodate multiple uses, stimulate
creativity, and encourage interaction
amongst students and faculty.

Browns point elementary
Tacoma, United states By TCF Architecture
The school district client requested a forward-
thinking, multi-use facility when designing
Browns Point Elementary School, requesting,
among other things, a design that would improve
personalised learning for students, facilitate staff
collaboration, and encourage compatible use by
organisations in an effort to, among other things,
1. supplement learning and strengthen social
connections within the schools, and 2. promote
public use of buildings outside of school hours.

Common Patterns
1-All 3 projects implemented the uses of double-heighted spaces or
atriums for natural light and ventilation.

Toilets should be evenly distributed around the school. It is important that students
have direct access to toilets from both within learning areas and from external play
areas without the need to re-enter learning spaces.
Both Browns School and Curro
School had a U-shaped footprint
which defines the main entrance (
marked in red) and makes it
obvious to people.

Unlike here, in Gilder Center where corridors are the

main way of connecting learning spaces.

Here, the architects minimized the use of

corridor space as there are alternative ways of
connecting learning spaces.
