Proposed Solutions/Changes

At the present time, fixed and approved treatments for Fragile X syndrome is still
unavailable. However, appropriate education, therapies, and medications are provided as
treatments to decrease its symptoms (NICHD, 2016). Treatments suggest early interventions
because an infants’ brain is still beginning to establish. Some usual treatments are educational
treatments wherein specialized teaching style will be practiced depending on the child’s specific
symptoms, therapy treatments services by speech-language, occupational, physical, or behavioral
therapists, and medication treatments (NICHD, 2016). Treatments that will be highly effective
for this disease must focus on neurobiological pathway abnormal in FXS (Protic et. al, 2019).
Setraline, a kind of anti-depressant inclusive in serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) are used for
anxiety. According to (Winarni et. al, 2012), from a study of language development using
Mullen Scales of Early Learning (MSEL), 16 to 60 months old infants that took a 2.5 to 5.0 mg
setraline per day improved their receptive and expressive language development than those who
did not took setraline. Another medical treatment is metformin, which is known medicine for
type 2 diabetes. There is an existing clinical data about its success as a treatment, accordingly,
seven FXS patients who received this for 6 months improved weight, eating behavior, and had
also accomplished positive behavioral changes breaking away from irritability, social avoidance,
and aggression (Dy et. al, 2018). What is more from this medical treatment is that it is highly
compatible even in a 4 year old child. Lovastatin is another available medical treatment for high
blood cholesterol and cardiovascular disease. These have been proven to regulate the excess
protein synthesis and helps prevent FMRI KO, one of the effects of increase in protein synthesis
in FXS (Osterweil et. al, 2013). Over 12 weeks of dosage among 15 participants, it resulted to
an improvement of communication, living, and socialization skills (Çaku et. al, 2014). There is
also a potential treatment for FXS in the form of the enzyme PI3 (phosphoinositide-3) kinase
targeting glutamate receptors which can enhance behavior and speech flexibility. Shown from a
study of Gross and Bassell (2012), are a rise of levels of the p110β form of PI3 kinase from
immortalized blood cells of FXS patients. This proved that the drug prevents and restores
regulation of protein synthesis in FXS. Moreover, PI3 kinase enzymes are potential treatments
for improvement of metabolic functions (Cell Reports, 2015). There is a wide variety of
therapies, and one that correlates for the FXS is therapies for mind and body such as yoga. This
can be an alternative treatment for FXS. Boris Pisman diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive
disorder (OCD), panic attacks, and anxiety introduced a Yoga-based approach for recoveries in
similar with his. He developed a Yoga psychology and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) into
a holistic treatment model. According to Pisman (n.d), meditative psychology is fit for people to
withstand their strong emotions, anxiety, and refusal to engage in thoughts. Its system is simple
and it is to relax and meditate. One of the symptoms of Fragile X syndrome is trouble paying
attention and tantrums; through mastering meditative psychology one can improve their
thoughts. One of widely popular energy therapy is Reiki. It is a form of therapy by laying of
hands in different manners and can treat many conditions and emotional states (Newman, 2017).
It is done by placing of hands gently on head, limbs, torso, and over 20 different areas of the
body for 2 to 5 minutes. This is where the transfer of energy takes place and will be repeated
continuously in different areas of the body. This therapy usually last for about 15 to 90 minutes
and can be done with many sessions. It stimulates deep relaxation for emotional, mental, and
spiritual well-being. In addition, Reiki has been used as an aid in treating autism (Newman,
2017). Therefore, it can be an alternative treatment for Fragile X which is a leading genetic cause
of autism. One in three people with this syndrome is associated with autism, still, those who
haven’t also share some autistic traits (Furfaro, 2018).
