Social cognitive career theory (SCCT) seeks to explain three interrelated

aspects of career development:

(1) how basic academic and career interests develop,


(2) how educational and career choices are made, and
(3) how academic and career success is obtained.

Social Career Cognitive Theory

- New theory that is kind of complex (komplikado)


- Combination of cognitive and social learning theories
- SCCT was developed by Lent, Brown, Hackett
- Draws from bandura’s theory of self-efficacy. (the concept of bandura’s theory
applies to the career development)
- According to this theory, career development occurs as a result of self-efficacy,
outcome and expectations also personal goals. (these concepts interact and
multiple ways)

// BUT FIRST IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND THESE INTERACTIONS,


WE NEED TO LOOK A LITTLE AT BANDURA’S THEORY. //

Im going to start with this idea of social learning. Ito po yung Triadic Reciprocal ni
Albert Bandura. You have these three things:

 the personal which includes cognitive abilities, personality, and everything,


 the environment, ito po yung kung saan tayo, ano klaseng environment meron
ka ngayon, paano ka pinalaki, at kung sino sino na mga taong nakapaligid sayo,
and the behavior.

EXAMPLE: Family mo and other relatives mo are into MEDICAL FIELD. But ikaw para
sayo yung gusto mo is malayo sa medical which is TEACHER
 You’re 18 years old – Name is Analiza – SHS student – matalino – mabait –
friendly an that is personal.
 The environment is your family – Yung family mo is super old school/rules –
super religious na tao
o Si Mother mo is doctor sa mga Physical therapist, Si ate mo is assistant ni
mother mo sa Physical therapist, and si Father mo naman Doctor ng mga puso.

So, we can see that things interact / connected to each other, okay?

Your personal factors are influenced by your environmental factors. As well as your
behavior din po. Minsan kasi mas binabagay natin yung sarili natin sa kung anong mga
sinasabi or actions ng tao towards satin, diba? Which is my good thing and bad thing
about dyan.

Certainly, impacted your self-efficacy. It impacted on how good you are in certain
things at kung saan ka masaya.

 Also, those personal factors influence your behavior, right?

So, you can see that those three actions go back and forth, okay?

In a Result: May ibang mga tao, na biniblame nila yung parents nila for everything na
hindi umaayon sa kanila yung sitwasyon

And now, we’re going to look naman sa theory nina Lent, Brown and Hackett ON how
it applies to our career / career theory po natin…

At the core of this theory, we have these three concepts that interact in much the
same way as social learning theory na tig proposed ni Bandura. So, these concepts are
self-efficacy, outcome expectations and learning experiences.

SELF – EFFICACY is the person’s confidence or belief that he or can she perform
specific behavior or manage situations.

 So, career self-efficacy, in terms of academic, specifically, taking college. If you


have high self-efficacy regarding sa pag college and sa course na kukunin mo
then you believe you can do the things you need to do to have a career, okay?

 And ganon naman talaga diba, once na alam mo na magaling ka sa certain field
then natural lang po na mafeel mo ang so much confidence in your self na
magagawa mo ng tama ang mga ito.

SELF-EFFICACY ACCORDING TO SCCT – is developed through personal


performance experiences, vicarious learning,

1. Yung personal performance ito po yung experiences mo towards something


and you evaluate them po,
o like for example po, nung Elementary ka, JHS, SHS ka nainspired ka n ani
teacher mo and sinabi mo sa sarili mo na “ gusto ko maging tulad ni
teacher pag laki ko” so sa madaling sabi po, dahil sa alam mo na
magaling ka sa bagay / behavior na yan, nag-iincrease po ang self-efficacy
mo, and if do poorly sa mga bagay na tulad ng ganito o you failed on
something, yung self-efficacy mo po is magde-decrease.
2. VICARIOUS LEARNING - Vicarious learning is a way of learning that allows
individuals to learn from the experience of others. In other words, this occurs
when an individual watches a model perform, imitates (ginagaya) that behavior.

3. SOCIAL PERSUASION - is the people around us or societal expectations sa


kung ano po dapat nating gawin..

4. PHYSIOLOGICAL STATES AND REACTIONS


o if you feel a lot of anxiety or if you get upset over experience, its
potentially gonna lower your self-efficacy and if you accomplish something
really really good about yourself, that’s going to increase your self-efficacy.

ALSO!!!

Self-efficacy is strengthened through successful experiences in a domain and


weakened by failures in the same domain.

 If we talk about domain po, we’re talking about like career self-advocacy. Ang
self-advocacy ito po yung kaya mong ivoice out ng nararamdaman mo, yung
bagay na gusto mo sabihin or magvoice out sa mga bagay na kailangan mo.

Hindi po ito yung bully ha na example.

If you have high self-advocacy in regard to like sports/athletics and mahina ka sa


klase, and maraming ganyang cases right, sa mga player. Ang result po nyan ay hindi
po maaapektuhan ang iyong self-efficacy in regards of sports pero in terms of
academic oo.

Gets po ba yung tinutukoy dito sa strengthened through successful experiences in a


domain and weakened by failures in the same domain

OUTCOME EXPECTATION

 These refers to the beliefs about consequences or outcomes of performing


particular behaviors.

Example: Nakakuha ka ng mataas na grado sa lahat ng subjects na tinitake mo, and


yung graduation day nyo ay next week na, and sa Nakita mo base sa mga grades mo,
alam mo nang Nakagawa ka ng something successful sa school year mo.

maaaring maging outcome po nito? //

 In other words po your SELF-EFFICACY is a personal thing, its confidence in


yourself, OUTCOME EXPECTATIONS is result as reality po since confident ka
about sa graduation day mo .

We are likely engage in activities that we think will be valued or will have good
outcomes.

So balik po tayo sa pinaka una kong example na scenario.

 Dahil sa ang family ni Analiza ay nasa field ng medicine and yung other relatives
mo, kaya yung pressure or inaasahan ka ng family mo na susunod din sa mga
yapak nila, diba?

So ang outcome expectation po dyan sa situation ay parang hindi ka ganon ka high


confident, dahil alam mo from that the start na iba yung gusto mo sa gusto nila, pero
if you do, what they wanted expected to you to do then it would be valued by your
family, PERO alam mo din sa sarili mo na hindi po yan magkakaroon ng magandang
outcome, dahil alam mo sa sarili mo hindi mo ganon kagusto ang medical field.
Example po baga nyan, is kunwari super yamanin kayo na family, may sarili
kayong hospital/clinic. And ikaw nalang yung nag aaral since na bunso ka,
mahirap na asahan ka sa bagay na hindi ka nalang talaga connected doon, diba
po ?

And wala po syang masyadong magandang outcome kasi you know na niloloko
mo sarili mo kung susundin mo yung gusto nina mother mo para sayo, not
unless na flexible kang tao, kasi meron mga students na pag yung ginagawa nila
is di nila gusto bina-block ng mind nila yung dapat na learning na nakukuha nila
doon or sa discussion.

So, your outcome expectations influenced your goals – and yung goal mo is sabihin na
natin gusto mo na maging honest sa family mo and sa sarili mo – kung kaya youre
goals aligned with your self-efficacy expectations and outcome expectations.

because the fact na you’re different / unique from them, And once nangpakatotoo ka,
maboboost or mag increase yung self-efficacy mo and kayang kaya mo na maexpress
yung sarili mo sa ibang tao. And that’s the good thing sa pag follow ng heart mo.

Okay, so now, LEARNING EXPERIENCES - the final component of triad

LEARNING EXPERIENCES, ito pong learning experiences ay similar sa environment


sa Bandura’s theory.

These are the things that were exposed to, and they come from our environment. So,
when we talk about context to the SCCT, this is our culture, our family, our
environment. Those things come in here to shape our learning experiences.

 Ready to graduate Senior High


 Student (A- Student) – 90-92.9 ang average nya sa overall - Outstanding
 From Ata Tribe

Anna is from a rural area. Ata tribe, and malapit na syang mag graduate this coming
march, matalinong bata, she has A- sa overall ng kanyang grade – RANGE 90 to 92.9
na grade point average.

At she is seeking for career counselor or career counselling from her school
counsellor, para tulungan sya sa pag decide kung ano ang dapat at tama na mag fi-fit
sa kanyang skills and also intellectual nya.

 Pero sa buong taon nyang pag school dun, ni hindi sya nag participate sa kahit
anong events, activities, seminars at kahit extracurricular activities kasi she’s a
working student. ]
 Sa kanilang pamilya, wala nakatungtong sa college dahil sa edad na 16 nag
wowork na agad like sa farm, dahil na din ata sa kadahilanan na sya ay kabilang
sa tribo ng mga Ata (hindi masyado nappansin ng government, kulang ang mga
opportunities para sa kanila), pero dahil din dun grabe yung determination ni
anna na makatapos ng pag-aaral sa kolehiyo.

So si Anna, nagbabalak na mag apply sa nursing program but she hesitant to do so


because she believes she will not accepted by the school she chosen, also natatakot
din sya na, pag naaccept sya sa nursing program ay baka magfailed lang sya agad.

//MAGTANONG// SO, CAN YOU IDENTIFY THE SELF-EFFICACY BELIEFS OF ANNA,


ANYONE PO? // What her outcome expectations – remember self – efficacy is her
belief in herself – outcome expectations are the more like practical side what she
thinks will actually happen / REALITTY and her learning experiences. //

SELF -EFFICACY – Anna believes that she won’t be good at college or nursing, in
other words, she has low self-efficacy.

OUTCOME EXPECTATION – are similarly negative and that she believes either won’t
get into the program or will fail out of the program

LEARNING EXPERIENCES – are the result of her environment.

 Nagawork syang part-time, kunwari sa fastfood chain


 her people believe na Education is wasn’t a priority
 she did not participate in any activities in school to help prepare her for college.
And those are her learning experiences

 Our interests if we look at Anna yung example natin kanina.


//Why do you think she has developed an interest in nursing ? ANY

Since hindi po nakalagay kanina sa sample yung full details about kay anna, so we are
going to predict or take a maybes.

Para sa akin, may nakikita akong dalawang dahilan:

 UNA, maaring nursing ang kanyang nagustuhan dahil base sa nakikita nya
kanyang tribo, (alam naman natin na ang mga ibat ibang tribo ay may madaming
kakulangan, kakulangan sa materyales at kakulanagan sa serbisyo.) Maaaring yung
mind ni Anna is gusto nya na mayroong atleast edukado sa tribo nila like pag
may nurse na sa kanilang tribo kaya n anito magmonitor ng kanilang mga
kalusugan at mabibigyan sila ng tamang treatment sa mga existing health
problems nila.

 PANGALAWA, magnunurse para makaasawa ng doctor HAHAHHAHA chaarrrr

NEED PO DITO NG LOTS OF RESEARCH ON IT//

// AND ALSO PO PALA, IF YOURE A CAREER COUNSELLOR DAPAT PO AS A PERSON


NA MAY KNOWLEDGE ABOUT DITO, DAPAT PO HINDI KA GUMAGAWA NG KAHIT
ANONG ASSUMPTIONS TOWARDS SA STUDENT OR KAHIT SA KATRABAHO MO, KAYA
IMPORTANTE NA MALAMAN NATIN KUNG GAANO KAIMPORTANTE ANG PAG
CONDUCT NG RESEARCH HINDI YUNG MAG AASUME KA NALANG, GAYA NGA NG SABI
KO KANINA, IT TAKES A LOT OF RESEARCH. AND PARA MAADDRESS MO DIN NG
TAMA ANG MGA MALILIIT NA THINGS NA NEED NG PANSIN / TUON//

So, according to SCCT, our interests are influenced by our goals.


 Again, to Anna she has decided po somewhere along the way that nursing is
where at. So her GOAL is to go to college to be a nurse.
 Pero wag mo natin kakalimutan na si client natin na si Anna ay may low self-
efficacy which means her doubtful in herself drag her down.

And after we have determined goals, the next step is we need to look at her actions,
okay?

 Kung ito ba ay mag – a- apply to college or hindi – yan po yung question na


gumugulo sa isip ni Anna
 Also, kaya po ganyan sya mag isip dahil po she was controlled by her negative
self-efficacy and outcome beliefs.

Now, this is also where culture and environment can come into play again.

And according to SCCT there are prominent environmental influences and they either
moderate which means they may impact or they maybe our goals and actions or they
can serve as BARRIER.

AT BASED SA SITUATION NI ANNA, ang environment nya is nag seserve as barrier,


why? Dahil po sa mga ito:

 Makakapagcollege si Anna BUT hindi naman ito matutulungan financially ng


kanyang parents kumbaga, masadiring kayod ka
 Language can also serves are barrier for Anna, dahil if yung school na pipiliin nya
is kunwari sa Manila, then maaring yung communication ay hindi ganon kasolid
dahil nga sa mababa ang confidence nya, Always remember lagi tayo babalik sa
Self-efficacy ng client.
 Nag papart-time job sya
 Kaya nya bang suportahan sarili nya?
 Anong mga work pa dapat nya pasukan para makaearn ng pera pang eskwela.

At ang mga yan po na environmental influences can be highly impactful especially if


someone already has low self-efficacy and outcome beliefs.

Here we have performance experiences. So,

Anna applies to the nursing program at the school she chosen and natanggap sya! At
sa pamamagitan po nyan, itong pangyayari, ang kakalabasan po nito is
maiimpluwensyahan po yung future interest nya pati yung goals actions nya at
kinaganda pa po nito is na bubuild up yung self-efficacy ng bata.
