1. INTRODUCTION
The scope of this manual is to describe all the operations required to properly carry out a standard
discharge test for a typical Water Spray System (with Deluge Valve).
The instructions given in this manual are intended at personnel in charge of the
commissioning/functional operation of the Water Spray System.
The discharge test will verify the operation and functionality of the Deluge Valve as a part of the
Water Spray System and to check that all typical auxiliary equipment (if any), such as audible and/or
visible alarms, valves, actuators, interlocks, instruments, actually operate as required and respect
the proper actuation sequence.
In addition, if the distribution piping line is installed, the acceptability of nozzles positioning,
discharge patterns and obstructions.
This test will also allow personnel to become completely familiar with the discharging system and
to practice response.
For any additional information, please refer to:
2. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
Full care and precaution shall be given by the factory management for the safety of the workmen
to prevents accidents during the execution of the works.
Every test shall be performed by qualified and well-prepared personnel, who are thoroughly familiar
with all equipment and test.
Every test shall be performed when the weather condition is suitable for inspection.
WARNING
The decision to activate the system must be taken by the person in charge of the safety
department. Always operate carefully and taking care of safety precautions.
Before running the test always advise all personnel, delimit the test area and be sure that no
personnel are present inside the room where the discharge will take place.

1. Ensure that the interception Gate/Butterfly valves upstream and/or downstream (if any) the
Deluge Valve are open.
2. Actuate the Deluge Valve by lifting the cover of the emergency valve (b2) and turning the handle
of the valve as shown on the plaque in the box. This will cause the release of water.
3. Ensure that there is no undesired pipe movement during discharge.
4. Check that the Alarm Gong (if any) sounds and that the Pressure Switches/Transmitters (if any)
send the “occurred discharge” signal.
5. Ensure that the connected equipment, electrical alarms and other functions (if applicable) are
controlled as required.
NOTE
The following step is intended only for a full system check, with distribution line installed and
connected to the Deluge Valve Skid (for example at commissioning/start-up at site).

1. Ensure that the interception Gate/Butterfly valves upstream and/or downstream (if any) the
Deluge Valve are open.
2. Activate the discharge by means of the detection system (or push the manual release buttons, if
any). The solenoid valve should actuate the Deluge Valve and consequent release of water. To
verify it, check the pressure gauge on the electrical actuation line (g2).

1. Ensure that the interception Gate/Butterfly valves upstream and/or downstream (if any) the
Deluge Valve are open.
2. Actuate the Deluge Valve following one of the steps below:
a. lift the cover of the Manual Emergency Valve (b2/[6]) on the Deluge Valve trim and turn the
handle of the valve, as shown on the plaque in the box;
b. turn the lever on the Manual Valve (if any) on the Instrument Air System to release the air
pressure and trigger the Pilot Relay valve (e/[9]).
Both ways, the priming chamber shall be de-pressurize ([1]) and open the Deluge Valve. The
Pressure Gauge (g1) on the priming trim line, shall indicate no pressure.
The Pressure Gauge (g2) and the Pressure Switch/Transmitter (P1) on the instrument air line shall
indicate/send a “low pressure” alarm.
3. Ensure that there is no undesired pipe movement during discharge.
4. Check that the Alarm Gong (if any) sounds and that the Pressure Switches/Transmitters (if any)
send the “occurred discharge” signal.
5. Ensure that the connected equipment, electrical alarms and other functions (if applicable) are
controlled as required.

position. Once it is closed, the Deluge Valve will automatically return in set (closed) position within
0.5-4 min.
8. Open the Deluge Valve’s drain and/or ball valve (b4) to empty out the remaining water from
piping; at the end of the operation, close the valves.
If Deluge Valve’s drain is not installed, carry out the drainage of the system by means a main drain
valve installed downstream the deluge valve.
1. Ensure that the interception Gate/Butterfly valve upstream and/or downstream (if any) the
Deluge Valve are open.
2. Activate Solenoid valve (a/[10]) by means of the detection system (i.e. push the local release
station) or simulate its intervention.
The Solenoid valve shall release the air and cause a pressure drop on the pneumatic circuit,
triggering the Pilot Relay valve (e/[9]). This shall de-pressurize the priming chamber ([1]) and open
the Deluge Valve. The Pressure Gauge (g1) on the priming trim line, shall indicate no pressure.
The Pressure Gauge (g2) and the Pressure Switch/Transmitter (P1) on the instrument air line shall
indicate/send a “low pressure” alarm.
3. Ensure that there is no undesired pipe movement during discharge.

The following step is intended only for a full system check, with distribution line installed and
connected to the Deluge Valve Skid (for example at commissioning/start-up at site).
7. Check the discharge pressure outlet and verify that the Pressure Reducing Pilot set point value is
correct (cross-checking with hydraulic calculation). If not, adjust the set point regulating the
screw on Pressure Reducing Pilot.
8. When done, close the upstream gate valve, return the handle of the emergency valve (b2) to
closed position and press manual reset knob (e) until the valve has closed. The main valve will
close within 0.5-4 min.
If manual reset knob (e) is not installed, once the manual emergency valve (b2) is closed, the Deluge
Valve automatically returns in closed position within 0.5-4 min.
9. Open the Deluge Valve’s drain (j) to empty out the remaining water from piping; at the end of
the operation, close the valve.
If the Deluge Valve’s drain (j) is not installed, carry out the drainage of the system by means a main
drain valve installed downstream the deluge valve.

4. ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA
4.1. CONFORMITY
The tested system/material is accepted if all steps in the procedures above are successfully
performed and all checks are conducted with positive results.
In particular, as required by NFPA 15, all of the spray nozzles shall fulfil the following requirements:

If required, a more detail observation of the system performance may be conducted as follows:
• Pressure readings shall be recorded at the hydraulically most remote nozzle to verify that the
water flow has not been impeded. A second pressure reading shall be recorded at the system
actuation valve to ensure the water supply is adequate.
• The time lapse between operation of the detection systems and water flow at the most remote
water spray nozzle shall be recorded.
Those readings shall be compared to the design criteria to determine that the system is operating as
designed.
Conformity leads to the issue of a Test Report noting the quantities inspected, the reference
documents and/or specifications, the result of the test and is signed by the warehouse manager and
client or Third-Party Inspector (if any).
4.2. NON-CONFORMITY
Whenever the tested material is not compliant with the procedures above, it is rejected and
consequently the Test Report will show the negative result of the test. if required, non-conformities
may be recorded in a dedicated Punch List and managed accordingly.
