1. INTRODUCTION

The scope of this manual is to describe all the operations required to properly carry out a standard
discharge test for a typical Water Spray System (with Deluge Valve).
The instructions given in this manual are intended at personnel in charge of the
commissioning/functional operation of the Water Spray System.
The discharge test will verify the operation and functionality of the Deluge Valve as a part of the
Water Spray System and to check that all typical auxiliary equipment (if any), such as audible and/or
visible alarms, valves, actuators, interlocks, instruments, actually operate as required and respect
the proper actuation sequence.
In addition, if the distribution piping line is installed, the acceptability of nozzles positioning,
discharge patterns and obstructions.
This test will also allow personnel to become completely familiar with the discharging system and
to practice response.

3.1.1. MANUAL ACTIVATION

Figure 3: Electrical/Manual Deluge Valve manual activation

1. Ensure that the interception Gate/Butterfly valves upstream and/or downstream (if any) the
Deluge Valve are open.
2. Actuate the Deluge Valve by lifting the cover of the emergency valve (b2) and turning the handle
of the valve as shown on the plaque in the box. This will cause the release of water.
3. Ensure that there is no undesired pipe movement during discharge.
4. Check that the Alarm Gong (if any) sounds and that the Pressure Switches/Transmitters (if any)
send the “occurred discharge” signal.
5. Ensure that the connected equipment, electrical alarms and other functions (if applicable) are
controlled as required.
NOTE
The following step is intended only for a full system check, with distribution line installed and
connected to the Deluge Valve Skid (for example at commissioning/start-up at site).

6. Observe the discharge patterns to verify that:

- patterns are not impeded by plugging of the nozzles;
- nozzles are properly positioned;
- nozzle discharge patterns are not obstructed from surfaces to be protected.
7. When done, close the upstream gate valve, return the handle of the emergency valve (b2) to
closed position and press manual reset knob (e) until the valve has closed. The main valve will
close within 0.5-4 min.
If manual reset knob (e) is not installed, once the manual emergency valve (b2) is closed, the
Deluge Valve automatically returns in closed position within 0.5-4 min.
8. Open the Deluge Valve’s drain (j) to empty out the remaining water from piping; at the end of the
operation, close the valve.
If the Deluge Valve’s drain (j) is not installed, carry out the drainage of the system by means a main
drain valve installed downstream the deluge valve.
