Objective of this task are to:
  Identify Main Issues and Problem Areas to be
addressed
  People and their social culture.
  Context
  Environment – urban, sub urban, rural.
  Generate Research Questions
  On social culture
  On architecture
  Accumulate Relevant precedent studies for design
  Identify the Scope for overall Design Programme
  Identify the focus for further individual research and
design.
  Understanding the target community and its
social environment.
  Understanding Building Functions & Social
Response to Buildings.
  (Should also be included in Individual
Research)
  Relate to Considerations in Architectural
Design
  Conceptual Considerations
  Perceptual Considerations
  Functional Considerations
  Technical Considerations
  Considerations in Architectural Design.xls
  Introduction
  Social culture research in architecture
  Definitions and elaborations of the subject matter.
  Precedents and Case Studies of communities in the
area. Learning points;
  Identification of Issues, Problems, Solutions, Concepts,
ideas or considerations on Rural/Urban living,
opportunities, economic activities, racial/multiracial,
social problems etc.
  Social Culture and Social Interactions, communal,
familial and individual culture and interactions, habits,
norms, practices, beliefs, rituals; Adults, youth ,
children, family, neighbours and community
  Physical and social environments
  Identification of Issues, Problems, Possible
Solutions and Concepts related to the Issues
Identified
  design considerations, living standards, enhanced
social conditions, shortcomings,
  Typology of Spaces
  Social Space/Levels/types of Interaction Spaces
  Meaningful Spaces - Place
  Expandable/Convertible Spaces
  Flexible spaces/adaptable Spaces
  How to address specific problems through
architecture and design.
  Why are we discussing this? Must be relevant
to architectural design.
  Strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and
threats (SWOT).
  Research Questions that have been generated.
  How are the above relevant to your research
and design for the community centre?
Objectives
  This task involves primary research on the target group
and target area. The objectives of this part of the
research are:
  To identify the characteristics of the components/
members and social culture of the community.
  To identify the relevant characteristics of the built and
rural/urban environment that is influenced by the
social culture of the community
  To identify the relevant characteristics of the built and
rural/urban environment that influences the social
culture of the community.
  To identify the experiences, needs, requirements and
expectations of the community.
  Inventory of environmental components – physical
environment and social environment – systematic mapping,
site analysis and inventory.
  Anthropological Observations of on site occurrences.
The findings of the research will be the basis
for each student to develop their own
individual research based design proposal
highlighting the design focus derived from the
research findings.
