GROUP ACTIVITY 2: GROWTH RATE IN THE

PHILIPPINES
1. Attached your readings on the predicted consequences of the population growth rate of
the Philippines.

The “population growth rate” is the rate at which the number of individuals in a population
increases in a given time period as a fraction of the initial population. Specifically, population. Growth
rate refers to the change in population over a time period, often expressed as a percentage of the number
of individuals in the population at the beginning of that period. According to the People and Earth’s
Ecosystem (Liwanag,2020-2021), the potential for severe food shortages is a major consequence of
population growth. Scientists agree that people and human population development are causing climate
change.Emission of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2), including ozone layer deflection.

The Philippines is one of the nations that is urbanizing most quickly in the globe, and crowded
cities come with their own set of problems. The Philippines' population grew from 26.27 million in 1960
to 113.88 million in 2021. This is a growth of 333.5% in 61 years. Lack of family planning education,
poverty, and the custom of having large families may be the main causes of population rise in our country.
Women in poverty have higher fertility rates for a variety of reasons, such as a lack of education,
accessibility to contraception, a lack of viable techniques, cultural or religious objections, and subpar
services. In the past, the Philippines had greater birth rates than many of its Southeast Asian neighbors
because it is a Catholic country with more enduring traditional values. A woman typically gave birth to
six children in the 1970s.

Human population growth impacts the Earth system in a variety of ways, including increasing the
extraction of resources from the environment, burning fossil fuels for energy, increasing freshwater use
for drinking, agriculture, recreation, and industrial processes, increasing ecological impacts on
environments, increasing fishing and hunting, increasing the transport of invasive species, and the
transmission of diseases. These impacts have a negative impact on the health of humans and other
species, as they release pollutants and waste that reduce air and water quality, harm the health of humans
and other species, and release pollutants and waste that reduce air and water quality. Additionally, as
populations increase, more land is used for agricultural activities, which can decrease species populations,
geographic ranges, biodiversity, and alter interactions among organisms (Population Growth, 2022).

2. Explain the possible factors for the growth rate in our country.
Demographers often concentrate on four major factors when attempting to predict changes in
population size: fertility rates, death rates (life expectancy), the population's beginning age profile
(whether it is relatively elderly or young to begin with), and migration.

The variables that affect population structure and growth are crucial to sustainable development.
Many nations have already voiced their worries about rapid population growth and begun drafting
reproductive health legislation. Population increase that is out of proportion puts stress on the
environment, human welfare, and global warming. Whereas, The diminishing population growth rates are
causing worry in industrialized nations and certain middle-income economies. A decrease in the number
of people in working age, a rapid aging of the population and issues with the labor force's renewability as
well as the viability of the social security and healthcare systems. In order to maintain a balance between
population processes (fertility, mortality, and migration) and socioeconomic development outcomes,
government policies and programs should focus on population stabilization and management.

According to the results of the 2015 census, the nation's humanity in 2016 reached 100,981,437.
Especially contrasted with the 2010 census findings, the population has expanded by more than 8 million
people according to the Census Bureau's 2015 figures. The pace of development decreased considerably
versus the last census, falling to 1.72% from 1.89%. The rate of conception presently stands at 2.1
children per woman. The increasing availability of contraception and contemporary conception
technologies is one cause behind that. Considering more than two million residents adding annually,
humanity will nearly double in approximately forty years.
