How To Utilize The Backing Tracks.

If you are reading this, it means you have either bought “The Complete
Drummer’s Guide (Printed Version)“ which is only available in Australia
and NZ, and you have now downloaded your 36 free backing tracks.
Or, you have come here via a promotional offer, which means you may not, as
yet, be familiar with “The Complete Drummer’s Guide Series“ at all.
Therefore to find out more, please continue reading this section for full details.
Please note: within this booklet are the 36 free drum charts, to the 36 free
backing tracks. However if you’d like to obtain a total of 135 backing tracks,
plus bonus material, there are two options available, but more about that later.
The First Step.

Firstly, for those who have purchased “TCDG (Printed Version)” all of the 36 free
backing tracks, are “Minus One” (i.e. minus drums) and there are two ways to
utilize them. The first way, or first step, is to simply play the drum beat patterns (as
they are introduced throughout the book) along to the corresponding backing
tracks. When utilized in this way, the backing tracks are open to interpretation.

Therefore you could simply think of them, as musical metronomic grooves for
jamming along to. This helps to develop feel, creativity, timing and musicality,
right from the start. And also, only a basic reading level is required at this
stage (i.e. you’ll only need to learn to read the basic drum beat patterns, as
they are firstly introduced. So no drum chart reading is required at this point).

The Second Step.

The next, or second step, is to utilize these same backing tracks, to develop
your practical sight-reading skills, and this is achieved by introducing written
arrangements, that correspond to each tune. These written arrangements start
out very easy to read and play and gradually progress to the advanced level.

Therefore, the idea is to introduce this second sight-reading step, once you are
comfortable with the first step, of simply jamming along to the backing tracks, and
also, as you progress further into your drum set studies.

This second sight-reading step, incorporates (in stages) a progressive and

practically applied, musical summary of all the material, as it’s presented
throughout the printed book. However, to incorporate this second sight-
reading step in full (i.e. utilizing all 135 backing tracks, plus the 12 additional
free bonus backing tracks) you have two options available to you.

Option #1: “The Complete Drummer’s Guide - (Full Version).”

“The Complete Drummer’s Guide - (Full Version)” is simply a combination of

the main, or printed book, plus the 135 backing tracks, and drum charts. Also
included are 12 additional free bonus backing tracks, plus 34 additional
percussion grooves, and all of this can be downloaded for only $14.95 USD.

“The Complete Drummer’s Guide (Full Version)” - in downloadable eBook

format, has been made available, for those who are not able to buy the printed
book (which, as mentioned earlier, is only available in Australia and NZ) and
includes everything “All In One.” So apart from the printed book, this is in fact the
best selling option and is an overview of 10 classic drum books (more about that soon).

Option #2: “The Complete Drummer’s Guide

(Book Of Drum Charts).”

“The Complete Drummer’s Guide (Book Of Drum Charts)” - also in

downloadable eBook format, has been made available for those who have
purchased “The Complete Drummer’s Guide (Printed Version)” but would also
like to obtain all 135 additional backing tracks plus drums charts separately. This book
can be downloaded for only $7.95 USD.

Also included with all downloads of “TCDG (Book Of Drum Charts)” are the
12 additional free bonus backing tracks, plus drum charts. Information
about these 12 bonus backing tracks can be found within the book itself.

So, based on your situation, the choice is yours on wether to buy and download the
“TCDG Full Version” or “TCDG Book Of Drum Charts.” Whatever you decide,
the big advantage in having access to the full range of material, is that you will
possess all of the information that has been designed to take your drumming from
the beginners level, all the way to the advanced level and beyond.

The Complete Drummer’s Guide (Book Of Transcriptions).

Also available, is “The Complete Drummer’s Guide (Book Of Transcriptions).”

This book of transcriptions features 65 drum transcriptions, ranging from classic
pop, to progressive rock, with some contemporary jazz and swing. Also included
with this eBook, are 65 MP3 solo drum backing tracks for each transcription.
Learning to play a drum transcription, in general, is very beneficial, because it
is like taking a lesson from the drummer who played on the particular
recording. Therefore this is a great book to incorporate into any serious
drumming program. To download a copy, for only $3.95, please click the
following link: “The Complete Drummer’s Guide (Book Of Transcriptions).”

The Complete Drummer’s Guide (Full Version) Is An “All In One”
Overview Of The Following 10 Classic Drum Books:
The reason why The Complete Drummer’s Guide (Full Version) has become
so popular, is because it is an “All In One” overview of the 10 classic drum
books presented below and over the next few pages. However, I would advise
you to obtain these classic drum books anyway, because they each provide
additional specialized and valuable information that every drummer should have.

1 - Progressive Steps To Syncopation By Ted Reed.

This book is arguably the best

selling drum book of all time
and presents a progressive
overview of basic timing
notated on the snare drum
(with quarter notes on the
bass drum underneath). This
book is certainly a classic and
it’s hard to find any well known
drummer that hasn’t gone
through this book at some
stage during his or her career.

2 - Modern Reading Text In 4/4 By Louis Bellson.

This book is a step up from the Ted Reed

Syncopation book (mentioned above) mainly
because it covers all of the recognized music
timing break downs (i.e. the additional ones
the Ted Reed book doesn’t cover. Such as: all
of the 16th note and 8th note triplet
combinations, as well as 16th note triplets
and 32nd notes).

Also the bass drum figures are not included

throughout this book, which means one has
to truly learn to recognize note values and
rests (i.e. the bass drum figures break each
bar into 4 subdivisions and usually one learns
to read by gauging the timing by way of these
4 subdivisions, rather than by learning to
recognize note and rest values).

Overview Of The Following 10 Classic Drum Books (Cont.):

3 - Realistic Rock By Carmine Appice.

As the name suggests, this book

concentrates on developing your
ability to play within the rock
drumming style and incorporates
a huge variety of rock beat
groove patterns that will surely
assist you in becoming a very
skilled rock drummer. In fact The
Complete Drummer’s Guide
introduces similar rock style
grooves, as soon as the drum
students has learned the first
few basic timing exercises.

4 - The Drummer’s Cook Book By John Pickering.

This book offers every variation

you could imagine, of the more
busy funky 8th and 16th note
rock and R&B style of groove
playing and was the inspiration
behind many of the similar
style grooves presented
throughout The Complete
Drummer’s Guide. By the time
you’ve completed this book
you’ll be able to read and play
any combination in this groove
pattern style.

Overview Of The Following 10 Classic Drum Books (Cont.):

5 - Advanced techniques For The Modern Drummer By Jim Chapin.

This book is aimed at the more

advanced jazz style coordination.
Covered in this book is nearly
every conceivable timing
combination that can be played on
the snare drum, while keeping the
standard jazz ride cymbal pattern
going over the top. Once again,
and as with all the books
recommended here, this book
presents a progressive approach to
developing these ideas. The
Complete Drummer’s Guide has a
whole section devoted to this style.

6 - Studio/Jazz Drum Cookbook - By John Pickering

Another great book, relating to

the jazz idiom and in a similar
style to the previous book, this
one also covers various snare
drum combinations that can be
played with one hand, while
keeping the standard jazz ride
cymbal pattern going with the
other. This book specializes in
nearly every conceivable 8th note
triplet variation that can be played
on the snare drum, against the
standard jazz ride pattern.

Overview Of The Following 10 Classic Drum Books (Cont.):

7 - Advanced Funk Studies By Rick Latham.

This is a great book for developing

a command of the contemporary
jazz and funk style of drumming.
Rick’s approach is particularly
musical and all about solid groove
playing and musical mastery. 2
CDs are included with the book
and, just like the other books
recommended here, this is a must
to include in your drum book
repertoire.

8 - Rhythmic Illusions By Gavin Harrison.

Towards the end of The Complete

Drummer ’s Guide, there’s a
variety of cross beat groove
pattern ideas, that were inspired
by Gavin Harrison’s great book:
Rhythmic Illusions. However
Rhythmic Illusions is a whole book
devoted to this subject and it is a
must for anyone who would like to
fully develop this intricate and
complex style of drumming.

The Complete Drummer’s Guide (Full Version) Is An “All In One”

Overview Of The Following 10 Classic Drum Books (Cont.):

9 - Stick Control By George Lawrence Stone.

This book is arguably the

second best selling drum book
of all time and presents a huge
variety of rudimental type
exercises and other variations,
that will surely help you to
obtain total mastery of stick
control, power and finesse on
the drums. Every top drummer
has gone through this book at
some point in time.

10 - The All American Drummer By Charley Wilcoxen.

Here’s another great classic, this

one offering a huge variety of
rudimental drum solos, featuring
the 26 standard, or the 26 original
snare drum rudiments. One thing
you’ll notice when working through
this book, is how each solo
incorporates a nice musical flow.
Presented towards the end of The
Complete Drummer’s Guide, are 8
mixed rudimental solos that are
based on the type of solo ideas
presented within The All American
Drummer.

Now that you know The Complete Drummer’s Guide (Full Version) is an “All In
One” combination of each of these classic drum books (which makes it very
convenient and affordable for you) I would highly recommend that you obtain
(at some point) all of these important classic drum books regardless, because
they each provide additional unique and specialized information, that should
be included within every serious drummer’s repertoire.

But First Here Are Some Repeat Sign Options

That You Will Encounter:

Within many of the drum chart arrangements to follow, you will encounter instances where
additional repeat sign options are utilized, in order to help contain the length of certain charts.
Options such as: 1st and 2nd time endings, D.S. (Dal Segno) and Coda signs. Shown below
is one example depicting each of these options (please see the explanations below for details).

Example Of 1st & 2nd Time Endings D.S. & Coda Signs:

1 - Explanation For The 1st & 2nd Time Endings:

In the example above, at the end of letter “A,” the idea is to take, what’s known as, the “1st time
bar.” Simply think of this as, the 1st time section, which can be and often is, more than 1 bar. (Note:
Multiple repeats can also be indicated). Then on repeating back to, and then from letter “A,” you
simply jump this “1st time bar,” and take the “2nd time bar” instead, and continue on from there.

2 - Explanation For the D.S. (Dal Segno) Sign:

Once you take the second time ending, at the end of the “A” section, you will see the following
written instructions: “D.S. al coda (with repeats).” D.S. stands for Dal Segno and this simply
means to go back to the sign (some call this the dollar sign, because it looks like a dollar sign
with dots). In the example above it also states “with repeats.” In many cases the instructions will
say “no repeats.” Therefore you will just need to pay attention to the instructions as they appear.

3 - Explanation For The Coda Sign:

Now we come to the “coda sign.” You’ll notice in the example above, it states “D.S. al Coda.” “Al
coda” simply means that after taking the “D.S.” you then look for a place where you will see the
“coda sign” (i.e. The sign that looks like a circle with a cross in the middle). When you see this sign,
which, in the example above, is at the end of the 2nd time ending, you simply jump to the other
matching coda sign, which in this case, is at the beginning of letter “B.” You then proceed to the
end of the chart from there. In many cases D.S instructions are given, without the “al coda” option.
This all depends on each arrangement, so once again, simply follow the instructions, as they appear.
