Introduction
Defining HIS
Massive, integrated systems that support
the comprehensive information of hospitals,
including patient, clinical, ancillary and
financial management.
Overview
A fully integrated hospital management system caters for the clinical, administrative and
financial needs of a modern hospital.

It utilizes information technology to simplify the day to day tasks of running an efficient
hospital and at the same time provide management with the necessary information to
make strategic decisions.

Consists of a range of application modules that support the administrative, financial and
clinical information needs of today's modern hospital. Each module can be implemented
individually or be combined to form an integrated system to suit each hospital's needs.

Some HIS have taken one step further by incorporating Web Technology and making it
easy for users outside of the hospital to use the services of the hospital.
Overview
To extend “IT based services” to the patient's bedside, it is possible to integrate
“handheld devices” with the HIS.

In the hospital, it eliminates the "record on paper and later transcribe" process of
nursing and clinical documentation.

Outside the hospital it is a cost-effective way of documenting home care where

telecommunications is not possible or too expensive.

HIS Applications
Patient Administration System

● Ability to define patient and data flow.

● Define multiple waiting list for multiple departments.
● Set up emergency triage categories, use of color code and define
maximum waiting times.
● Resource Management Tools for maximizing human resources and
equipment.
● Process / Episode Management - is the ability to manipulate and manage
patient records for billing and patient management purposes.
● HIS offers the hospital all the tools necessary to manage records and
ensure the integrity of the patient's physical and electronic records.
HIS Applications
Clinical Information System

● CIS is the Heart of the HIS.

● Clinical Workbench enables doctors, nurses and other clinicians to
perform their tasks from a single intuitive interface.
● Integrated Care Pathways (ICP) can be set to define and manage clinical
pathways for more effective clinical patient care.
● Order communications to the Laboratories / Ancillary Services.
● All results and clinical notes enter a common Electronic Record of the
patient, enabling all Care Providers to get the complete information to
treat the patient.

Principles of Systems Development
● Process of defining, designing, testing, and implementing a new
software application or program.

● Principles:
○ Get the system users involved
○ Use a problem-solving approach
○ Establish phases and activities
○ Document throughout the development
○ Establish standards
Principles of Systems Development
● Principles:
○ Manage the process and projects
○ Justify systems as capital investments
○ Don’t be afraid to cancel or revise the scope
○ Divide and conquer
○ Design systems for growth and change
