7 LAMPS OF ARCHITECTURE

INTRODUCTION
7 LAMPS OF ARCHITECTURE book was written by John Ruskin and published
in May 1849 in UK. This book is structured with eight chapters; an introduction
and one chapter for each of the seven 'Lamps', which represent the demands that
good architecture must meet, expressed as directions in which the association of
ideas may take the observer. This book acts as a detailed history of architecture as
it stood in the mid-19th century.

dENSO HALL

INTRODUCTION
Denso Hall is a library located at the corner of M.A. Jinnah Road and Murad Khan
Road in Saddar Town, Karachi. It was constructed in 1886 as the first library for
the natives of Karachi and designed by James Strachan. Made in Gizri stone, it has
projected balconies with carved balusters. Max Denso, in whose honour the
structure was made, was a known figure in the latter half of the 19th century. In
1870 he held the chair of the Chamber of Commerce.

Along M.A. Jinnah Road Denso Hall is flanked on one side by the well-known
Jahangir Kothari Building, also designed by James Strachan, and on the other
several other attractive structures. On the opposite side are situated several historic
buildings built by the old merchant princes as reminder of Karachi’s eminence as
the largest wheat exporter in the entire British empire. The famous Marriott Road
in the rear also carries many protected historic structures. The area is easily
accessible from all parts of Karachi.

There are many buildings in Karachi that are unique in their architecture. The
restoration work of Denso Hall included in these buildings has been completed. An
excellent example of Gothic architecture, the building is made of yellow stone
masonry and is a beautiful landmark of ancient Karachi. The building was named
after the social figure of the time, Ideology Denso. After the establishment of
Pakistan, government offices were built in the building and then gradually its
appearance started deteriorating. The destruction of historic buildings can be seen
everywhere in the steepest area, but despite the glare, the structure of these
buildings still attracts onlookers. Denso Hall Street has also been made traffic free
and eco-friendly. From here, the poles have been removed and the wires have gone
underground while the entire street has been closed to pedestrians by removing the
traffic. They also convey a message of love to the cultural heritage. The ups and
downs of the time. The passage has increased the historical significance of the area
and also raised awareness among the citizens about the protection of their heritage.

RENOVATION OF DENSO HALL

The Heritage Foundation is renovating the Denso Hall Library and developing a
400 foot trail next to the library. For the project, the carbon free bricks that the
construction of the trail requires, are being prepared by Samina and 230 other
women living in Makli graveyard in Thatta. Although it should be noted that
unskilled labour who are employed to do similar brick-making work are normally
paid Rs1,000 per day and skilled labour charge more that Rs3,000 approximately
per day, so the decision to employ these women isn’t entirely free of some quid
pro quo and does carry a faint smell of exploitation
