3 EDCS-81103 LINE PROTECTION AND MONITORING DEVICE

3.1 FUNCTION PRINCIPLE

3.1.1 OVERCURRENT PROTECTION
The protection response to interphase short-circuit fault, and the device set three stages of
overcurrent protection which has separately current and time setting and control command.
Each stage has complex voltageC negative sequence voltage and undervoltage )blocking function
and direction blocking function which can be freely selected by means of control command. The
direction of protection function with the directional element means that the positive polarity side
of TA is in the bus side.
When bus TV is disconnection, by the means of control command "TV fuse failure quit
current protection", Select to quit the complex voltage blocking and directional blocking of this
stage of current protection to become pure overcurrent protection, or just directly quit this stage
of current protection. If the voltage range is back to normal after TV fuse failure, the protection
also will be back to normal. Here the meaning of "current protection" refers to those current
protection stages which pickup complex voltage blocking or directional blocking. Those stage of
current protection which neither pickup complex voltage blocking nor directional blocking is free
from the effect of this control command.
'
Overcurrent l-Stage Protection and Overcurrent ll-Stage Protection are definite time limited
current protection; Overcurrent Ill-Stage Protection can be selected by means of control
command to be definite time or inverse time. The action time of inverse-time overcurrent
protection is inversely proportional to the size of fault current in the protected lines, i.e. the larger
the fault current, the shorter the action time, vice versa. Inverse time characteristics follow the
protocol of IEC255 4. -
3.1.1.1 OVERCURRENT I-STAGE PROTECTION LOGIC
The protection includes the following components:
1) Complex Voltage Element, voltage comes from TV of low voltage side. Operation criteria
are:
Min ( Uabi Ubc, Uca ) Uiz(j, U2 > U2zd ;
The above negative sequence voltage and undervoltage are two conditions of "or”
relationship.
Where: Uab, Ubc, U^: Phase-to- phase voltage; Uud: undervoltage setting;
U2: negative sequence voltage; U2z(i: negative sequence voltage setting
2) Directional Element: 90° wring mode for the interphase directional component; basic angle
is -45* or 135 ° (voltage leads the current); started by phase; current and voltage comes
from TV and TA of low voltage side. In order to eliminate the dead zone of three-phase

3.1.6 LOW FREQUENCY LOAD SHEDDING

This protection is configured with low voltage blocking and frequency slip difference
blocking functions for low frequency protection.
When the system frequency is lower than the setting frequency, low frequency element is
started. According to the size of the slip difference to distinguish fault conditions, motor reverse
charging and real active short, thereby determine whether to remove the load.
By means of the control command “df/dt Blocking Pickup", select whether block the lew
frequency protection when the decrease of the frequency is more than slip differential blocking

setting. Low voltage blocking protection pickup fixedly, and when Uat> phase- to phase voltage is
less than the blocking voltage settings of low frequency load shedding, the low frequency load
shedding element exit automatically.

3.1.13 SYNCHRONIZED CLOSING

1) Latch voltage checked closing: when Latch voltage check closing is enable, after received
the command of synchronization parallel connection, close directly under the three
conditions: voltage of system side is less than Latch voltage check setting while paralleling
side voltage is greater than it; paralleling side voltage is less than Latch voltage check
setting while voltage of system side is greater than it; both voltage of system side and
paralleling voltage are less than Latch voltage check setting. While if both of the two are
greater than setting, enter into the logic of synchrocheck closing.
2) Synchrocheck closing: when synchrocheck is enable, after received the command, if the
synchronism conditions satisfied |Us-Ug|< AU and |Fs-Fg |< AF, find the first synchronous
point and closing can be conducted immediately: if the quais- synchronism conditions are
unsatisfied, it reported failure upon the synchronism time coming and quits synchronism
closing operation. If the frequency difference condition was satisfied(the difference between
system frequency and paralleling side frequency is± 0.05Hz or less), and voltage exist

TWJ abnormal alarm is used for detecting the correctness of the position signal of the
breaker’s normally closed contact. “TWJ abnormal alarm” would be reported and LED indicator
would be trigged, if one of the two operation criteria is met.
.
1) If Max ( la lb, lc ) >0.06ln, and auxiliary setting “digital input 1 is TWJ" is set as 0, digital input
“TWJ" is 1, it will alarm after a delay time of 10s.
2) If Max ( la, lb, lc ) >0.06ln, and auxiliary setting “digital input 1 is TWJ" is set as 1, digital input
“input 1" is 1, it will alarm after a delay time of 10s.

3.1.18 CONTROL CIRCUIT DISCONNECTION ALARM

Judge the integrity of the control circuit, according to the contact position of relay HWJ and
relay TWJ. If the contact position of HWJ and TWJ detected both are 0 or 1, the unit report “control
circuit disconnection alarm” and trig LED indicator after a delay time of 10s to confirm.
Control circuit disconnection detection can be picked-up/dropped-out by control command.
3.1.19 SPRING DISCHARGED ALARM

If digital input“spring discharged" is 1 , the unit report “spring discharged” and trig LED
indicator and alarm signal after a delay time to confirm. The delay time is settable.
3.1.20 REMOTE CONTROL

1) Remote/local switch
Switch on the device and upper computer is available. If remote control mode is selected ,
the unit would block operation and prompt “remote state block” when tripping/closing operation is
conducted locally. R/L respectively appearing at the first line of main heading page stands for
remote/local separately.
2) Tripping operation
To breaker, it required detecting remote/local mode and it is unnecessary to detect the
position of breaker. Output pulse width is 1s.
3) Closing operation
To breaker, it required detecting remote/local mode and protection operation output. Closing
operation is unavailable before protection operation output is removed and it is in no need to
detect the position of breaker. Output Pulse width is 1s.
3.1.21 OTHERS

With the function of disturbance recorder, the device at most records 15 analogs and 32
digital information. The 1-24 bit of digital information word is output signal (bit 1- 5 is corresponding
to output 1-5 of CPU presser, bit 6- 12 is corresponding to output 6-12 of IO presser, specific
definition is decided by engineering design; Bit 13-24 is reserved, which does not use in this
device); 25-32 bit of digital information word is digital input signal, corresponding to the front 8
input signal of CPU presser.
There are two type oftriggering mode of disturbance recording:
1) Command triggering
2) Protection action triggering
The main memory of SCM only memorized the directly sampling data of recording data
without any processing, and the processing of recording signal is completed in background
computer.
The device also records the events of operation , status input displacement, setting modifying

1) Select the setting range to set before setting values.
2) When one parameter is not in used, set the parameter as higher limit for over voltage

protection and set the parameter as lower limit for under-voltage protection. Set time as
100s. Quit function control command and open hard presser.
3) Generally unrestrained protection and accelerated overcurrent protection need a delay time
of tens or a hundred millisecond. Setting delay time as 0 may not avoid the impulse current
when the breaker is closed and zero sequence impulse current may be caused by 3-phase
unsynchronized closing, for Microprocessor based protection doesn’t have a delay of 100
milliseconds.
4) The corresponding production element is pickup only when control word, soft presser state
(not judge if not set this function), hard presser state (not judge if not set this function) all are
valid, otherwise, dropout the corresponding production element.

NOTE:
1) The device equips operational circuit. If onsite only provide protection tripping output ,
remote control tripping output and remote control closing output , but do not connect the
terminal of " to tripping coil” , “HWJ", “to closing coil", “TWJ" in the operation circuit with the
terminal box of operation device, and terminal KM- is hang in the air, the device cannot
collect location signal from internal part.
2) If the device cannot collect location signal from internal part , define the digital input 1 and 2
as input terminal of these signal as required (if digital input 1 and 2 do not be defined as
breaker location or remote control input signal , i.e . corresponding control command is 0 , it
can be used as common signal). The following is the input principle of these signal:

26

NEW CENTURY-RELAYS EDCS- 81103 Line Protection & Monitoring Device Instruction Manual

• TWJ introducing principles:

TWJ must be connected with digital input 1 and control command "digital input 1 is TWJ"
must be set as 1, if the device has the function of Reclosing , accelerated overcurrent
protection , accelerated zero sequence protection or if the device is expected to provide total
signal. TWJ should be connected to digital input 1 and control command "digital input 1 is
TWJ’ must be set as 1 , here the indicator show the tripping position of breaker by means of
the signal from digital input 1, if tripping operation is conducted by breaker. Otherwise , TWJ
should be not introduced into the device and "digital input 1 is TWJ" should be set as 0 and
input 1 can be used as common digital input.

• HWJ introducing principles:

If tripping operation is conducted by breaker, HWJ should be connected to digital input 2
and control command “digital input 2 is HWJ" must be set as 1, here the indicator show the
tripping position of breaker by means of the signal from digital input 2. TWJ should be not
introduced into the device and ‘digital input 2 is HWJ" should be set as 0 and input 2 can be
used as common digital input in other cases.
3) If TWJ signal and HWJ signal is not collectable, “Detect control circuit fuse failure’ should be
set as 0 to avoid issuing “Control circuit fuse failure” signal. Otherwise , “Detect control
circuit fuse failure’ should be set as 1.
4) Remote controlled tripping and remote controlled closing correspond to this switch.
Standard Configuration has only one group of remote control while group 2 of remote
control & group 3 of remote control are offered only when IO optional module unit is
selected.
5) Modifier for phase difference: used to revise the phase difference between bus- voltage and
line voltage caused by different sampling mode and wiring mode.
6) Closing time of breaker: the time from sending closing pulse to the time breaker closed.
7) Valid time of synchronism operation: the longest synchronism returning time.

The above wring chart is taking PCL-841CAN bus communication card, for an
example.

The CAN signal is transmitted by the short frame that the valid bytes count to 8, with the
that the transmitting time is short, interfered probability is low. The function
of automatic close will

exit off the contact of the node with bus when the node communication is
severity mistake so that

the communication and other nodes on the bus are not influenced. So the anti-interference ability
is very strong The CAN bus can work in peer- to-peer,
any node can send information at any time

to all others on bus, it can structure many host systems

7.2.2 RS -485 COMMUNICATION LINEAR CONNECTION

EDCS- 8000 senes device can use RS-485 to compose communication network that the
protocol is IEC-G0870-5- 103 The transmitting medium of RS-485 is shielded twisted pair wire, and
the communication distance can reach to 1200 meters. When a lot of the devices link up to a
RS-485 bus or the baud rate is higher, the distance will accordingly shorten. The EDCS-8000
senes generally be slave in ttie system, and the master could be a PC or a communication
management device etc

<4

NEW CENTURY-RELAYS EDCS-8110 Line Protection & Monitoring Device Instruction Manual

If the master is not provided with RS-485 port but only the RS-232, the RS-232/485 convertor
would be used (a kind of device used for transforming the interface level between RS-232 and
RS-485).
In actual application, RS-485 net may be various topology structures, take the RS-422/485
communication car (PCL-745) for example
The line form connection, which is connecting the devices of EDCS-8000 series to the
communication network one after another from the place of master to the end, is suitable for the
situation that the devices are fixed concentration and there is expanding demand in future.
In figure 7-10, Rt is an anti-reflective resistor which resistance must match for the cable
impedance. Generally be 120Q.

FIG 7-10 RS-485 communication connection chart

To improve the quality of communication, suggestions for user’s reference are as follows:
1) High-quality STP is essential and it is recommended the shielded twisted pair with AWG22
,

( 0.25mm 2)
Two twisted wires should differ from colour.
2) Communication lines must be connected fast and reliably. The communication in whole
system will be affected if the connection of communication lines is bad , disconnected,
shorted-circuit or the configuration of communication parameters is not right.
3) Pay more attention to the single point grounding of the screen; the so-called single-point
grounding means that on the screen of one communication line one and only one point is
grounded. Grounding at both ends will bring the ground loop current , resulting in inducing
noise interference on the communication cable.
4) On one communication line, the RS-485 ports must be the A (+) connected to A (+), B (-) to
B (-), do not be reverse.
5) Communication lines should be away from the sources of electromagnetic interference,
such as strong electricity lines, as far as possible.
7.2. 3 ETHERNET COMMUNICATION CONNECTION

When single device is connected to Ethernet card , choose cross twisted-pair connection way.
When single device is connected with network device (such as switch) , either direct or cross
twisted- pair connection way.
