The Impact of

Parent
Involvement
and Academic
Achievement
Jasmine Elagha
Topic and Purpose
Topic
The correlation between parent involvement and academic achievement among high school students.
Relevance:
“Parent involvement in a child's early education is consistently found to be positively associated with a child's academic
performance. Specifically, children whose parents are more involved in their education have higher levels of academic
performance than children whose parents are involved to a lesser degree” (Topor et al., 2010, para 2). The relevance of
this topic relates to achievement gaps between groups of students. Educators must understand the relationship
between parental involvement and academic success, and the many factors that contribute to academic achievement. It
is also important for educators to discover ways to provide support for students to achieve when parental involvement
is nonexistent.
Contribution:
The data revealed in this study will contribute to the plethora of data already in existence that focuses on parental
involvement and academic achievement. Findings from this study will uncover an in-depth amount of information
about the different levels of parental involvement and how these levels affect academic achievement.
Purpose:
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationship between parental involvement and academic achievement
among high school students. While parental involvement has been strongly linked to academic success, it is important
to understand the extent of parental behaviors associated with successful academic outcome
Research Question
To what extent does parental involvement impact academic
achievement for students at Barstow High School?
Design and Methodology
Design
Mixed Method Design.

Subjects
Subjects will include individuals that represent specific groups, in this case those groups would be high school students and
parents from Barstow Unified School District. Each sample with take into account socioeconomic status, families
educational history, ethnicity, parenting styles, and gender.

Instruments/Data Collection
Qualitative methods will be used to measure the impact of parental involvement and its correlation with academic
achievement. Data will be collected through the use of surveys, observations, interviews and document analysis.
Quantitative methods will be used to measure the effects of parental involvement in relation to student performance by
evaluating student exam scores and grade point average.
Data Analysis
The data revealed in this study will be analyzed by comparing academic performance with gender
socioeconomic status, family education history ethnicity and parenting style. To increase the credibility of
the results, multiple methods (surveys, observations, interviews and document analysis) will be used to
measure the impact of parental involvement and academic achievement.

Evaluating exam scores and grade point average generated be each group of students will be analyzed using
Analysis Of Variance also known as (ANOVA). ANOVA would be the appropriate design method because it
is capable of measuring the overall change and determine if there is a significant difference between three or
more groups.
