INTRODUCTION TO LESSON
SUMMARY OF THE LESSON
INTRODUCTION
A disability is any condition that makes it
more difficult for a person to do certain
activities or effectively interact with the world
around them (socially or materially). These
conditions, or impairments, may be cognitive,
developmental, intellectual, mental, physical,
sensory, or a combination of multiple factors.
Impairments causing disability may be
present from birth or can be acquired during
a person's lifetime. Often, disabled people are
"unnecessarily isolated and excluded from full
participation in society.’’ As a result of
impairments, people with disabilities can
experience disablement from birth, or may be
labeled as disabled during their lifetime.
DISABILITIES IN EARLY
CHILDHOOD
Despite all the best efforts at prevention, children
may be born with or develop the following
disabilities in early childhood, from the causes
which are not yet fully understood or could be
prevented.
Types of Disabilities:
1.Visual impairment
2.Hearing impairment
3.Loco motor impairment; Cerebral Palsy
4.Mental retardation and Mental illness
5.Children with learning disabilities
HOW IS DISABILITY DEFINED?
Disability has been defined based on an evolving
and dynamic concept. The Act covers the
following specified disabilities:-

1) Physical Disability
 Locomotor Disability
 Acid Attack Victims
2) Visual Impairment
 Blindness
 Low Vission
3) Impairment
1.PHYSICALLY DISABILITY
A physical disability is a limitation on a
person's physical functioning, mobility,
dexterity or stamina. Other physical
disabilities include impairments which limit
other facets of daily living, such as respiratory
disorders, blindness, epilepsy and sleep
disorders.
LOCOMOTOR DISABILITY
Locomotor disability means problem in moving
from one place to another, that is, disability in
legs. But, in general, it is taken as a disability
related to bones, joints and muscles. It causes
problems in a person's movements (like walking,
picking or holding things in hand, etc.)
ACID ATTACK VICTIMS
"Acid attack victims" means a person disfigured
due to violent assaults by throwing of acid or
similar corrosive substance.
2.VISUAL IMPAIRMENT
Visual impairment is a term experts use to
describe any kind of vision loss, whether it's
someone who cannot see at all or someone who
has partial vision loss. Some people are
completely blind, but many others have what's
called legal blindness.
BLINDNESS
Blindness is a lack of vision. It may also refer to a
loss of vision that cannot be corrected with
glasses or contact lenses. Partial blindness means
you have very limited vision. Complete blindness
means you cannot see anything and do not see
light. A condition where a person suffers from any
of the following conditions namely:
Total absence of sight or
Visual acuity not exceeding 6/60 or 20/200
(snellen) in the better eye with correcting lenses;

LOW VISSION
A person with impairment of visual functioning
even after treatment or standard refractive
correction but who uses or is potentially capable
of using vision for the planning or execution of a
task with appropriate assistive device.
3.IMPAIRMENT
Missing or defective body part, an amputated
limb, paralysis after polio, restricted pulmonary
capacity, diabetes, nearsightedness, mental
retardation, limited hearing capacity, facial
disfigurement or other abnormal condition.
PROBLEMS FACED BY
DISABILITIES.
1. Accessibility
Types of accessibility
1.2.1 Access to information
1.2.2 Access to transport
1.2.3 Access to buildings
1.2.4 Access to Health care
2. Myths
3. Acceptance
4. Employers' doubt
5. Lack of education
6. Trapped in Poverty
7. Negative attitudes
HOW CAN WE HELP THEM?
 Always treat people with disabilities as
equals. All people want to have friends, fun,
and experience life to the maximum. People
with disabilities are no exception. Never be
afraid, skeptical, or embarrassed to approach
someone with a disability. People with
disabilities have just as much fun!
 Always ask before you help. People with
disabilities have varying levels of
independence. Never assume someone with
a disability has a low-level. If someone looks
like they’re struggling, ask before you help.
A person may welcome help, or they may ask
that you let her be independent; but even if
she looks like she’s struggling, she may just
want to become more independent, which
requires practice in everyday situations.
 Never assume someone does or does not
have a disability. Everyone is different.
Sometimes, people with disabilities may act,
feel, or think differently than you. Don’t
assume that for this reason someone has a
disability, simply treat him/her as an
individual because all people should be
treated equally.
 Do not stare. Sometimes it is an eye-opening
experience to see someone with a disability
in public. However, people with disabilities
have lives just like everyone else. You are
certainly allowed to look, but do not stare at
a person with a disability. Simply view them
the way you view others.
 Respect and understand confidentiality.
People with disabilities have a right to
privacy. They are not obligated to tell you
about their disability. If someone does tell
you about his/her disability, do not assume
that he/she is comfortable with you telling
other people about his/her disability. Always
ask permission to discuss the disability
before you do it.
We have seen various types of disability, the
problems faced by them and how we can help
them. Now similar to these problems there is a
story “on the face of it” from our supplementary
text book vistas . Let us move to that story
THEME
The play deals with the sense of loss, a sense of
isolation and how to overcome it. The actual pain
caused by a physical impairment is often much
less than the sense of alienation felt by the
person. The title ‘On the Face of it’ is used to
mean that something seems to be good, true etc.
but that needs to be changed when you know
more about it.
Appearances are deceptive and most often, we go
on dealing with impressions and prejudices about
others without bothering to know them. People
know Mr Lamb as a lonely, eccentric lame old
man but in reality, he is a very kind and generous
man who longs for company and he loves his
fellow human beings along with all the other
creations of God. Similarly, Derek appears to be
an abominable ugly boy with a huge scar on his
face whom no one loves or likes or befriends. He
is the object of other people’s hateful stares,
ridicules and neglect. Even his mother does not
dare to kiss him on the cheek with the scar. Yet
this boy who is suffering from an acute inferiority
complex has a tender and sensitive heart. He
wants to love and be loved. Fortunately, he meets
Mr Lamb who transforms him with his healing
touch.

JUSTIFICATION OF TITTLE
“On the Face of It” is an informal expression used
to say that what may seem good but this opinion
may change when you know more about it.
This definition of the expression should leave us in
no doubt about the appropriateness of the title.
Mr Lamb is called Lamely Lamb and mothers were
afraid of sending the children because of his tin
leg. Derry has a burnt face and everyone pities
him. Only a mother could love such a face.
Both Mr Lamb and Derry have been facing hatred
and alienation. Mr Lamb takes comments lightly.
But Derry does not have the attitude like Mr
Lamb. The attitude of the people needs to be
changed. On the face of it, both suffer from
disability but their attitudes are very different.
The title is therefore justified.

SUMMARY
This is a play. Moreover, it is about the friendship
between a young boy, Derry and an old man, Mr.
Lamb. Because of his facial scar, he is very upset
and feels that people do not want to associate
with him. So, to hide from people he gets into the
old man’s garden but panics when he meets him.
Mr. Lamb put him at ease and advise him to
accept life as it comes. Further, he as a more
cheerful and optimistic approach to life. Also, he
conveys Derry to live life to the fullest and avoid
bitterness. He further advises him to accept life as
it is. However, Derry was moved by Mr. Lamb’s
attitude and spirit. Besides, when Derry tries to
come out of his shell, he met a great loss of the
only person who makes friends with him.
MORAL
The moral is very loud and clear that people who
are physically disabled should not be isolated , we
should help them expand their social interactions
and help them fight loneliness, depression and
disappointment. Mr Lamb tells Derry that it all
depends upon people's individual perceptions.
