Collection Development Proposal

Anne Endres
LIS 773

This collection development proposal project for Lincoln School Library is designed to add to a
graphic novel collection within our library, focusing specifically on non-fiction graphic
novels. The Lincoln School student community is made up of students from grades 6-9. This
proposed collection will be geared for general audiences but will also feature some easier texts
for pleasure reading and to encourage reluctant and lower-level readers. We’ve also chosen to
add some higher-level graphic novels for the more advanced readers, but any level reader may
have the option to check them out if the topic interests them.

Over the last decade, non-fiction graphic novels have emerged as “a major story telling medium”
(Boone, 2018). The stories told are often fun but can also include biographical, historical, or
autobiographical narratives that are personal to the author and artists that create
them. Nonfiction graphic novels blend interesting topics with engaging artwork that tells
these stories in exciting ways. The graphic novel format engages students of all literacy levels to
read and learn about historical and biographic topics and subjects like never before. Reluctant
readers and readers of all levels can build their sequencing skills and infer meaning from the
combination of visual and textual content. These novels also benefit teachers by giving them
differential learning options for students of all levels and ways of learning.

LEARNING STANDARDS TO BE MET

The selection process focused on developing our non-fiction graphic novel collection to appeal
to readers of all levels but especially the reluctant learners in grades 6-9. The
Illinois CC standards that are currently used to assess student skills at Lincoln School can be
met for readers of varying levels using non-fiction graphic novels. Because graphic
novels incorporate visuals as well as text, they are perfect for students of all learning
levels. Teachers can also use these as supplemental learning materials for students who need
differentiated learning materials. An enhanced collection of graphic novels for grades 6-9 should
allow students, by the end of the year, to meet the following learning standards.

CCSS.ELA-6.2 Determine a central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular
details.
CCSS.ELA-6.5 Analyze how a particular sentence, paragraph chapters, or section fits into the
overall structure of a text and contributes to the development of the ideas.
CCSS.ELA-6.7 Integrates information presented in different media or formats (e.g. visually) as
well as in words to develop understanding of a topic.
CCSS.ELA-6.9 Compare and contrast author’s presentation of events with that of another author.

CCSS.ELA-7.2 Determine two or more central ideas in a text and analyze their development
over the course of the text, provide an objective summary of the text.
CCSS.ELA-7.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including
figurative connotative, and technical meanings.
CCSS.ELA-7.7. Compare and contrast a text to an audio, video, or multimedia version of the
text, analyzing each mediums portrayal of the subject.
CCSS.ELA-7.9 Analyze how two or more authors writing about the same topic shape their
presentations of key information by emphasizing different evidence or advancing different
interpretations of facts.

CCSS.ELA-8.2 Determine a central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of
the text, including its relationship to supporting ideas; provide an objective summary of the text.
CCSS.ELA-8.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including
figurative, connotative, and technical meanings; analyze the impact of specific word choices on
meaning and tone, including analogies or allusions to other texts
CCSS.ELA-8.7 Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of using different mediums (e.g.,
print or digital text, video, multimedia) to present a particular topic or idea
CCSS.ELA-8.9 Analyze a case in which two or more texts provide conflicting information on
the same topic and identify where the texts disagree on matters of fact or interpretation.

CCSS.ELA-9.2- Determine a central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course
of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an
objective summary of the text.
CCSS.ELA-9.4- Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text,
including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings; analyze the cumulative impact of
specific word choices on meaning and tone (e.g., how the language of a court opinion differs
from that of a newspaper).
CCSS.ELA-9.7- Analyze various accounts of a subject told in different mediums (e.g., a person’s
life story in both print and multimedia), determining which details are emphasized in each
account.
CCSS.ELA-9.9- Analyze documents of historical and literary significance and how they address
related themes and concepts.

SELECTION PROCESS
Titles for this collection development project were selected after researching these awards sites
and reading journal articles. On the Humility & Doxology website, an article discusses the merits
of non-fiction graphic novels for all readers, but especially for the reluctant reader (Sloan,
2020). They also give us a list of the best non-fiction graphic novels for kids and teens with story
descriptions and appropriate age suggestions. I also looked at SLJ for ideas on what non-fiction
graphic novels to select and came across a great article called “12 Essential Non-Fiction Graphic
Novels for Kids and Teens” (Willey, 2020). In it, the author gives us a list of titles
that cover more complex issues and overlooked topics in history, along with appropriate age
recommendations. Finally, I reviewed the YALSA website for suggestions of non-fiction graphic
novels. They have a great page that has a good selection of non-fiction titles selected by a team
of librarians from around the country (Lerno, et al., 2020).
After looking at articles, journals and lists, I compiled my own list of titles
and descriptions and met with my student “Readers Advisory” group. This group consists of 2
representatives from each grade level and is purely voluntary. I had them look at the list
and make their suggestions to help me develop our burgeoning collection. And finally, in our
monthly library blog, we enlisted parents to make suggestions for our growing non-fiction
graphic novel collection. After a brief overview of the why graphic novels are important to
readers of all levels, we shared our list and had a form for parents to submit their
recommendations. Once the final list was compiled, I looked at Amazon, and Common Sense
Media for age recommendations, and other factors that will help me finalize the list.

Graphic Novel Awards

According to University of Toronto Libraries, “While graphic novels have been known to win
literary awards such as the Pulitzer Prize, there are three main awards that are exclusive to the
graphic novel community” (University of Toronto Libraries, 2020).

The Eisner Awards (https://www.comic-con.org/awards/eisner-awards-current-info)
The Eisner Awards are probably the most well-known graphic novel awards. The Will Eisner
Comic Industry Awards are considered the “Oscars” of the comics world. Named for the
pioneering comics creator and graphic novelist Will Eisner, the awards are given out in more
than two dozen categories during a ceremony each year at Comic-Con International: San Diego.

The Harvey Awards (https://www.harveyawards.com/en-us.html) are one of the comic book
industry’s oldest and most respected awards. The Harveys recognize outstanding achievements
in over 20 categories, ranging from Best Artist to the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame. They are the only
industry awards both nominated by and selected by the full body of comic book professionals.

The Ignatz Awards (http://www.spxpo.com/ignatz-awards) The Ignatz Awards, named for the

character in the classic comic strip Krazy Kat by George Herriman, are the festival prize of the
Small Press Expo. Since 1997, they have recognized outstanding achievement in comics and
cartooning. The Ignatz Awards recognize exceptional work that challenges popular notions of
what comics can achieve, both as an art form and as a means of personal expression.
