ROLLING CONTACT BEARINGS

• Rolling bearings can carry radial,

thrust, or combinations of the two
loads, depending on their design.

• Types of Rolling Bearings:

1. Ball bearing
2. Roller bearing
BALL BEARING

• Ball bearing
ROLLER BEARING

• Roller bearing
DYNAMIC LOAD RATING

𝐶 𝑘
• L= × 106 (revolutions)
𝑊
• LH = L / (60 N) (hours)

• L = Rating life
• C = Basic dynamic load rating
• W = Equivalent dynamic load
• LH = Working hours
• N = Speed, in rpm
• k = 3, for ball bearings,
• k = 3.33, for roller bearings.
RELIABILITY FACTOR Kr

𝐶 𝑘
• L5 = Kr × 106 (revolutions)
𝑊

• The definition of rating life L is based on a

90% reliability (10% failure).
EQUIVALENT RADIAL LOAD

• W = X . V. WR + Y . WA

• V = A rotation factor,
• V = 1 ( for all types of bearings when the inner race is rotating)
• V = 1 (for self-aligning bearings when inner race is stationary)
• V = 1.2 (for all types of bearings except self-aligning, when
inner race is stationary)
EQUIVALENT RADIAL LOAD

• W = Ks ( X . V. WR + Y . WA)

EXAMPLE 1

• Select a single row deep groove ball bearing for a radial load of 5000 N and an axial load of 4000 N,
operating at a speed of 1500 r.p.m. for an average life of 5 years at 10 hours per day. Assume uniform
and steady load.
• Solution:

L 1/k
• C=W
106
• LH = 5 × 300 × 10 = 15 000 hours (Assuming 300 working days per year)
• L = 60 N × LH = 60 × 1600 × 15 000 = 1440 × 106 rev
• W = Ks (X . V. WR + Y . WA)
• Ks = 1 (Table 27.5, for uniform and steady load)
• In order to determine the radial load factor (X) and axial load factor (Y),
• WA/ WR = 4000/5000 = 0.8
• WA / C0 = ? Assume (WA / C0 = 0.5)
EXAMPLE 1

• WA/ WR = 0.8 • X = 0.56

• WA / C0 = 0.5 • Y=1
EXAMPLE 1

• W = Ks (X . V. WR + Y . WA)
• V = 1 (The inner ring rotates)
• W = 1 (0.56 × 1 × 5000 + 1 × 4000) = 6800 N

L 1/k
• C=W k = 3 (ball bearing)
106
1440 × 106 1/3
• C = 6800 = 76788.5 N = 76.79 kN
106
• From Table 27.6, select bearing No. 411
• C = 78 kN and C0 = 60 kN
• WA/ WR = 0.8
• WA / C0 = 4000/60000 = 0.066
EXAMPLE 1

• WA/ WR = 0.8
• WA / C0 = 0.066

0.066 Y

0.07 − 0.04 1.6 − 1.8 WA/C0

0.04 − 0.066 1.6 − Y
0.07
Y = 1.627 0.066
0.04
X = 0.56
1.8 Y 1.6 Y
EXAMPLE 1

• W = Ks (X . V. WR + Y . WA)
• W = 1 (0.56 × 1 × 5000 + 1.627 × 4000) = 9308 N

L 1/k
• C=W k = 3 (ball bearing)
106
1440 × 106 1/3
• C = 9308 = 105110 N = 105.11 kN
106
• From Table 27.6, select bearing No. 414
• C = 112 kN and C0 = 102 kN
