STANDARD FOR
DISTRIBUTION FUSE CUTOUT

1. SCOPE
This standard covers the electrical, mechanical and performance requirements for fuse cutouts to
be used for line sectionalizing and equipment protection on REB over-head distribution systems.

2. GENERAL
Fuse cutouts furnished to REB specifications shall conform in all respects to the requirements of
this standard. These fuse cutouts shall be of the open, expulsion, drop-out type, and shall be
satisfactory for use in a tropical climate with high relative humidity. The cutouts will be mounted by
means of steel brackets on wood poles and cross arms.

3. RATINGS
Distribution fuse cutouts shall have ratings as defined in ANSI/IEEE Standard C37.40 and as
specified in ANSI 37.42 as summarized below:
3.1 Service Conditions
a. Temperature - up to 40oC
b. Altitude - up to 1,000 meters
3.2 Rated Voltage
a. Nominal System Voltage - 11,000 GrdY/6,350 volts
b. Rated Maximum Voltage - 15,000 volts
c. Low Frequency Withstand KV, RMS -
dry, 60 sec. - 35
wet, 10 sec. - 30
3.3 Rated Impulse Withstand Voltage - 95 KV.

3.4 Rated Frequency - 50 Hertz.

3.5 Rated Continuous Current - 100 amperes.
3.6 Rated Short Time Current
a. Momentary (1 cycle) - 10,000 amperes
b. 15 cycles - 7,100 amperes
c. 3 seconds - 1,600 amperes.
3.7 Rated Symmetrical Interrupting Current - 7,100 amperes.

4. DESIGN
Distribution fuse cutouts furnished to REB specifications shall be designed and manufactured in
accordance with ANSI C37.42. The cutouts are intended for use with button-type fuse links
meeting the standards of REB Publication 302, but must be able to accommodate fuse links
meeting the interchangeability requirements of ANSI C37.42. Figure 1 shows a conceptual
arrangement and nomenclature of a distribution fuse cutout. These cutouts shall have the following
design features:

4.1 Fuse Support Assembly

a. Fuse Support Insulator - wet process porcelain.

b. Markings
Manufacturer's Identification Product Type
Date of Manufacture*
Rated Continuous Current
Rated Maximum Voltage
Rated Interrupting Current
Basic Impulse Level
c. Contacts - Silver Plated

d. Connectors - tin-plated bronze parallel groove type, for #6 to 4/0 AWG Copper or
Aluminum Conductors.
e. Load-buster tool attachment hooks.

f. Mounting Supports - suitable for use with the mounting bracket provided to mount the
cut-out so that the centerline of the fuse support insulator is at an angle of 150 to 200
from the vertical.

4.2 Fuse Holder Assembly

a. Fuse Tube - bone fiber lining with exterior painted gray, non-expendable cap.
b. Contacts - Silver Plated

c. Fuse Link Position - the fuse tube shall be designed so the fuse link is centered in the
tube, with provision for mechanical ejection of the fuse link leader on low current faults.
d. Opening and Lifting Eyes - the fuse holder shall hang vertically from the fuse support
assembly when in the open position, and shall have opening and lifting eyes suitable for
removal and installation of the assembly, and opening and closing of the cutout with a
switch stick described in ANSI C37.42.

e. Thumb Screw - for securing the fuse link to fuse holder assembly.

4.3 Mounting Bracket

Each distribution fuse cutout shall be provided with a mounting bracket meeting the
requirements of ANSI C37.42, Section 2.4 for Type A mounting brackets. The mounting
bracket shall be adjustable to accommodate standard 2.4384 meter (8 foot) and 3.048 (10
foot) wood cross arms. The mounting bracket, machine bolts and compatible standard square
nuts and lock-washers shall be hot-dip galvanized in accordance with ASTM A153.

4.4 Lock Washers

All mounting bolts and conductor connectors require lock washers. Lock washers shall be
fabricated from material that comply with the requirements of ANSI B18.21.1.

5. TESTS
5.1 Design test shall be conducted by the manufacturers in accordance with the applicable
provisions of the latest revisions of ANSI C37.41 and ANSI C37.42. Design tests shall include,
but not be limited to the following:

a. Dielectric Tests.
b. Withstand Voltage Tests.
c. Interrupting Rating and Performance Tests.
d. Short Time Current Tests.
e. Temperature Rise Tests.

5.2 Conformance tests shall be conducted in accordance with ANSI C37.42, Section 2.3.

6. OTHER STANDARDS
The dimensional and performance requirements of distribution fuse cutouts based on other
internationally recognized standards are acceptable only if the requirements of such standards are
equivalent to or exceed the requirements quoted in this document. As coordination with other
reclosers and sectionalizing devices is critical for protection of the REB distribution systems, the
standards in this document covering operating characteristics shall be strictly adhered to. All
accompanying drawings are conceptual. The manufacturer is responsible for preparation of
drawings and a design which meets the dimensional, strength, and other performance
requirements of this standard. The text, figures and references to other standards supplement
each other, and shall be considered parts of this standard.

7. PACKAGING
Each distribution fuse cutout, together with its mounting bracket shall be securely packaged in a
box clearly labeled to show the manufacturer's name, product identification and type, voltage and
current ratings and REB Item Number.
