One pair of parallel element is for +45°polarization and the other

exhibits a wide impedance bandwidth of 37.5% ranges from 0.67

I. INTRODUCTION

W ITH the rapid development of wireless

communication systems, the channel capacity is
becoming more and more important for the increasing number
of mobile devices and subscribers. Moreover, included with
LTE700 MHz, the working bandwidth has been extended to the
range from 698 MHz to 960MHz [1][2]. Furthermore, in the
modern complicated circumstance, performances of isolation, (a)
gain, radiation patterns and half-power beam width (HPBW)
are very important issues for dual-polarized antenna in base
station applications. Recently, a number of work has been
focused on polarization diversity by using ±45°
dual-polarization [3]-[11]. However, their bandwidth is not
wide enough to cover LTE700MHz. In [12], the antenna is
designed to cover 698-960MHz with dual-polarization.
However, the HPBW of 65±6 deg is desirable in the urban
concentrated base station application. Therefore, it is demanded
to design a dual-polarized antenna to satisfy wideband and
stable radiation pattern as well as enhanced isolation.
Recently, a resonator-loaded methodology for bandwidth
enhancement was proposed by us [13]. By loading a resonator
with proper size and position beside the dipole. A new
resonating mode is induced in the desired band. Therefore,
wide impedance bandwidth can be achieved. Based on our
previous work, a novel wideband dual-polarized antenna is
presented in this letter. The proposed antenna shows

be achieved with resonator. On the other hand, HPBW is a

critical issue in base station application. The key parameter for
stable radiation patterns is dis (dis is the distance between the
same polarization dipoles). It is known to all that the +45°
dipole has an equal peanut-shaped radiation pattern at
H-plane(XOZ) and E-plane(YOZ) plane. As the increase of
frequency, the beamwidth of an in-phase two element array
(c) becomes narrow while the beamwidth of a dipole over a

stable radiation around 65°, which is suitable for base station
application, can be obtained with proper dis and H. As shown in
Fig.4, with the increase of dis, the HPBW for H-plane is
decreased. Stable HPBW of 65°±5° can be achieved when
dis=150mm. The H is designed around 0.25λ. Since we have
separate the arm of Fig.2(b) into three part, the horizontal part,
the inclined part and the vertical part. Three critical parameters
for miniaturized element is Lxv, Lx and gama. The first
resonant mode is decided by the length of the dipole. As

shown in Fig.1. Basically, the antenna consists of a box-shaped
reflector, two pairs of bending dipoles. One pair is dipole 1 and
dipole 3 and the other pair is dipole 2 and dipole 4. Each pair is
fed by a two-way coaxial power divider, which is equal of
phase and magnitude. Fig.2 illustrates the evolution of the
proposed antenna. Different from our previous single polarized
antenna [13], the bended dipole has a miniaturized length of
0.38λ (Ld2, λ is the wavelength at the center frequency of 0.82
GHz), which is reduced by 30% compared with the original
length of Ld1. In this way, more compact dual-polarized
antenna can be achieved, which is of great significance in
multi-array antenna. Furthermore, stable HPBW of 65±4°at
H-plane can be obtained, which is suitable for base station
applications. The antenna was simulated by Ansoft HFSS [14]

B. Mechanisms and parameter study
The parameter studies are illustrated to have a better
understanding as well as basic design guideline for the
proposed antenna. Basic on the resonator-loaded planar dipole,
we can see clearly from Fig.3, a new resonating mode is
induced with resonator [13]. As the increase of L1, the newly

the intersection is appeared by the end of the dipole arm.

3) Then, bending the arm of dipole and avoid the intersection.
We should fold them appropriately to insure the radiation
performance as well as miniaturization. The vertical part Lxv is
set as 0.1λ. The inclined part is for impedance matching,
usually gama=30deg and Lx=0.12λ.
3) Finally, further optimize each parameter and excellent
performance can be achieved over the desire bandwidth.

A prototype was fabricated to verify the proposed design
Fig.8. The S-parameters were measured by an Agilent N5230A
vector network analyzer. And the radiation patterns and gain
were carried out by the anechoic chamber. The measured and
simulated S parameters are shown in Fig.9. The measured

the isolation is more than 40dB. The measured gain is 9.25dBi
with 0.25dBi variation over the whole band shown in Fig.10,
which is a little bit less than the simulated one for the
measurement loss. Fig.11 shows the measured and simulated
radiation patterns for H-plane (YOZ plane) at 0.69GHz,
0.82GHz and 0.96GHz. The stable HPBW are shown in
TABLE II. The measured HPBW is 61.7°with variation of less
than 1.5°at both H-plane and V-plane. Comparison between
several low frequency antennas are listed in TABLE III.

C. Design guideline
Based on above analysis and parametric study, a design
guideline is recommended as follows. Assuming that λ is the
wavelength corresponding the desired center frequency.
1) Firstly, setting the dimension of resonator-loaded dipole as
Ld1=0.5λ, L1=0.25λ, dl=0.01λ, w1=0.03λ, H=0.25λ and the
length of reflector GD=λ with proper baffle.
2) Secondly, setting the distance of the same polarization dipole
antenna dis=0.25λ. Insure that the HPBW is around 65°. Then Fig.9. Simulated |S11| of the proposed antenna with different (a) L3, (b) d3.

applications. The impedance bandwidth is greatly improved

loaded with resonator. Enhanced isolation of more than 40dB
has been obtained. Moreover, very stable radiation pattern and
gain have been achieved. With all these advantages, the
proposed antenna is desirable for base station application.
Furthermore, the remaining space of all the proposed design are
potential choices for embedding the high frequency element.
Therefore, the proposed design is also a promising choice for
multi-array dual-polarized antenna.
