The diagram shows two circles of the same size, with centres Q and R respectively. The radius of
both circles is r cm.
(a) Explain why ∠𝑇𝑄𝑅 = 60° .
(b) Show that the perimeter of the shaded region = (𝜋 + 1)𝑟 cm.

Latitude gives the measure of a central angle with vertex at Earth’s center whose initial side goes
through the equator and whose terminal side goes through the given location. Reno, Nevada is
approximately due north of Los Angeles. The latitude of Reno is 40° N, while that of Los Angeles is
34° N. The radius of Earth is 6400km. Find the north-south distance between the two cities.

Two gears are adjusted so that the smaller gear drives the larger one, as shown in the figure below. If
the smaller gear rotates through an angle of 225°. Through how many degrees will the larger gear
rotate?

The figure above shows the cross section of a railway tunnel, modelled as the major segment of a circle,
2
centre at C and radius of 3m. The angle ACB is 3 π radians. Give your answer in exact form,

a) Find the length of AB.

b) Determine the area of the triangle ACB.
c) Find the cross sectional area of the tunnel.

28
AM_F5C1_CircularMeasure
The figure shows a circular sector OAB of radius 3x cm, subtending an angle θ radians at O.
The line AC is perpendicular to OB and has length (2𝑥 − 1) cm. The length of OC is (2𝑥 + 2 ) cm.
a) Show that 𝑥 = 5.
b) Find the area of the shaded region ACB.

AM_F5C1_CircularMeasure
The figure shows two identical circles with centres at A and C, overlapping each other and meeting at
the points B and D. The radius of each circle is 6 cm. Each of the angles BAD and BCD is 3π radians.
The region, shown shaded in the figure, enclosed by the two circles, including the overlap, is a car
logo design. Find the area of the logo design.

AM_F5C1_CircularMeasure
The figure shows a circular sector OAB with centre at the origin O. The points A and B have
coordinates (6,8) and (8,6), respectively.
a) Show that the angle AOB is approximately 0.2838 radians.
b) Find, to 2 decimal places, the area of the sector OAB.

31
AM_F5C1_CircularMeasure
The figure shows a circle of radius 6 cm, centred at O . An arc OC with centre at A and radius 6 cm is
drawn inside the circle. A second arc OD is drawn with centre at B and radius 6 cm. Show clearly that
the area of the shaded region OCD is 6(3√3 − 𝜋)cm2 .
