Executive Summary
Robi Axiata Limited is the ‘second-largest telecom service provider in Bangladesh. It
commences its journey in 1997 with the brand name ‘Aktel.’ In 2010, it changed its brand name
from ‘Aktel’ to ‘Robi’ with the change of its parent company name from ‘Telekom Malaysia
International’ to ‘Axiata Limited’ parallelly. Since its journey in Bangladesh, it has
successfully acquired 50.9 million subscribers. The company performed a merger with Airtel
Bangladesh on 16 November 2016; the biggest merger commenced by any business
organization in Bangladesh in the telecom sector. The report titled ‘Sales Forecast of Robi
Axiata Limited’ tries to forecast the sales of Robi considering the sales data of Robi's‘ pre-paid
and ‘post-paid’ connections. The forecast is performed using five forecasting techniques and
find out the ‘mean absolute deviations’ of forecasted value then make a comparison to denote
which technique is well suited. The ‘Microsoft Excel’ software program of ‘Microsoft Office
360’ has been applied to accomplish the forecasts' calculations.

1. Company Profile
Axiata Group Berhad is a Malaysian multinational telecommunications conglomerate that
started its journey in Bangladesh as ‘Telekom Malaysia International’ with the brand name
‘Aktel’ in 1997. In 2010, ‘Telekom Malaysia International’ rebranded itself as Axiata Limited
and changed the brand name from ‘Aktel’ to Robi Axiata Limited. It is the second (2nd) largest
mobile network operators in Bangladesh with a subscriber base of 50.9 million as of the end of
December 2020. The company performed a merger with Airtel Bangladesh on 16 November
2016 and continue its commercial operation in Bangladesh. The merger with Airtel Bangladesh
was the biggest ever merger commenced by any business organization in Bangladesh and the
telecom sector.

The 61.82% ownership of Robi is preserved by Axiata Group Berhad of Malaysia, where
else 28.18% is preserved by Bharti Airtel of India. The general public of Bangladesh holds the
remaining 10% of the ownership. The company debuted the Bangladeshi stock market of both
Dhaka and Chattogram on December 24th, 2020, with the largest IPO ever.

Robi Axiata is the first (1st) company that launched a 4.5G service in all the 66 districts of
Bangladesh on February 20th, 2018, which was the first day of the commercial launch of the
4.5G service. As of the end of 2020, Robi Axiata has created the largest 4.5G network in
Bangladesh in 13,030 cities which covers 97.4% of the entire country's population. It was also
the sole mobile operator in Bangladesh which has complete the trial run of 5G and the first
operator to introduce Voice over LTE technology (VoLTE) on a 4.5G network.

From the socio-economic involvement responsibility, Robi Axiata has created and
introduced ‘Robi-10 Minute School’ which is the largest online school in the country. It also
established internet corners in seven (7) divisional public libraries, safe drinking water
purification facilities in ten (10) major railway stations of Bangladesh.

In the promise of creating a unique digital experience for the subscriber, Robi has
introduced Islamic lifestyle app- Noor; sports entertainment app- Sports; customers digital self-
service app- My Robi app has added some excitement to the daily lifestyle of Robi customers.

2. Products of Robi Axiata
Robi Axiata Limited is a telecom service provider, and the products of Robi can stretch
broadly in two dimensions

The core services of Robi include providing telecommunication solutions and internet
connectivity to its customer. To perform the core services, Robi Axiata has a comprehensive
range of offerings for their customer. These includes

• Pre-Paid connections
• Post-Paid connections
• Internet Pack offers
• Voice Pack offers
• Bundle Pack offers
• Recharge offers

From the services mentioned above, customers can only see and feel the Pre-Paid and Post-
Paid connections with the physical existence of packaging and SIM (Subscriber Identifications
Module) cards with Robi branding.

2. Value Added Services
Besides providing the core service of telecommunication to its customers, Robi Axiata
also offers the following ‘Value Added Services (VAS) to make life easier. These are:

❖ Caller Tune Service named ‘Goon Goon.’


❖ Balance Transfer Service between ‘Robi to Robi’ and ‘Airtel to Airtel’
❖ Robi Shop- an online store to purchase electronic compliances, mobile handsets,
and accessories.
❖ ‘BINGE’- an online live entertainment streaming app for android and apple smart
devices.
❖ ‘Cinematic’- an online streaming app of high definition (HD) movies for android
and apple smart devices.
❖ ‘Robi Cash’- an electronic wallet app for the smart devices through which Robi
customers can purchase tickets, recharge airtime, made payments of utility bills
(Gas & Electricity), perform merchant payment.
❖ ‘Splash’- an entertainment app for android and apple smart devices for streaming
songs.
❖ ‘Robi 10 Minute School’- an app-based educational service through which
students can learn only through internet streaming with smart devices.
❖ ‘Robi Vehicle Tracking’ a GPS-based service for tracking the real time location of
a vehicle.

3. Service Design of Robi


Axiata Limited
A customer started its journey with Robi through purchasing a new connection of Robi or
Airtel, either ‘Pre-paid’ or ‘Post-paid’ based on their preferences. The new connection can
either be purchase through arriving at the ‘Robi Center’ or through authorized merchants of
Robi Axiata. A customer can experience the service of Robi in one or all of the following Four
(4) ways.
• Through visiting the physical outlets of Robi
• Through using the cellular network of Robi
• Through calling IVR (Interactive Voice Response) number

• Through Using ‘My Robi’ or ‘My Airtel’ App

3.1 Through Visiting the Physical Outlets


A customer can experience the service of Robi Axiata physically by visiting the outlets. In
this way, the customers will experience the hospitality prepared by the Robi for them. The visit
to the outlet starts with collections of tokens. When the customer arrived at the Robi Center,
the customer has to sanitize themselves in this COVID-19 pandemic. A designated person
welcomes and sprays the sanitizer liquid to the customer. Next, the person must ask the
customer for what purpose he or she came to visit in the Robi Center. The customers visit the
Robi Center mainly for the following reasons

➢ Purchase of new Robi or Airtel connections (either pre-paid or post-paid or both);


➢ Replacements of the SIM (Subscriber Identification Module) card/ cards;
➢ Reregistration’s of the previous connections or to update KYC (Know your customer)
data;
➢ For recharge of the pre-paid connection account or payment of the post-paid bills;
➢ To avail the MNP (Mobile Number Portability) facility;
➢ To purchase the mobile devices;
➢ To deactivate the lost cellular SIM and to reactivate with a new SIM;
➢ To complain and clarify the quarries about Robi;
➢ To request for call log on a specific number;
➢ To purchase and activate internet packs and voice bundle;
➢ To activate roaming;
➢ For availing exclusive offers;
➢ For purchase and activation of Vehicle Tracking System.

After knowing the purpose of the customer, the designated person issue token. After
issuing the token, the customer is served by a customer care representative. If there are queues,
the customer has to wait in the waiting facility for few moments. While waiting, the customer
can enjoy free internet through Wi-Fi. The customer care representative is required to access
several computer software programs to serve a customer successfully. The followings are some
of the software’s uses by Robi customer care executive: -SVS, STS, DCRM (Digital Customer
Relationship Management System), QMS (Queue Management System), Network Dashboard.

3.2 Through Using the Cellular Network of Robi
Robi Axiata Limited creates service for its customers through the establishment of the
cellular network infrastructure. The customers of Robi will experience this service by
connecting themselves to the networks of Robi through their mobile devices. The connection
processes of the cellular network can be illustrating through the following,

When a customer has a Robi connection in his or her mobile handset dial a contact number
to make a call, the cell phone starts communicating with the nearby ‘Base Station Tower’ (Base
Station #01 or Base Station #03) to complete the call. The network base station then
communicates with the network switching station to change the connection to communicate
with the receiver end's base station. When the receiver end (Base Station #02 or Base Station
#03) receives the signal from the network switching station, it will communicate with the
mobile receiver device designated with a unique ‘subscriber number’ and complete the process.
The whole process took a split of seconds.

In modern days, cellphone subscribers also use internet service known as ‘Mobile Data
Service’ through their mobile phone connection. The process of the mobile data can be

The customers' evaluation of the service quality of Robi Axiata while using the Robi or Airtel
connections in network infrastructure will depend on-
1. How quickly the network can connect a call to the receiver;
2. How clear are the voice of the caller and the receiver can be heard from both ends of
the caller and the receiver;
3. How fast is the ‘Mobile Data’ service as claimed by the Robi Axiata;
4. The rate of the call drop;
5. The voice call charge;
6. The charge involved in the ‘Mobile Data’ packs.

3.3 Through Calling IVR (Interactive Voice Response)

The customers of the Robi Axiata can also have the service of the Robi through calling the
‘Interactive Voice Response or IVR number. Through dialing the IVR numbers; Robi and

Airtel customers can listen to the specific options with voice playback set by the Robi
Axiata in the system and avail their desired service over the call. The customers can listen to
various available internet packs, voice packs, bundle packs, postpaid bill information and can
register a complaint. To make it cost-efficient, Robi Axiata Limited has outsourced their IVR
service to two different ‘Back Office Service’ (BPO) provider organizations named ‘Digicon
Technologies Limited’ and ‘Genex Infosys Limited.’

3.4 Through Using ‘My ROBI’ APP


The Smartphone users among the Robi and Airtel Subscribers can enjoy the services of
Robi through the APP ‘My Robi’ or ‘My Airtel’ created for the Android or Apple smart
devices. Through this APP, Robi & Airtel users can purchase voice bundle and internet packs;
recharge their pre-paid account; browse through different offerings; check the principal account
balance and balance of other active packs with validity (voice & internet); add or delete
numbers to the F&F programs and much more. The functional process of ‘My Robi’ APP can

4. Financial Strength Review of
Robi Axiata Limited
Bangladeshi’s second-largest mobile operator Robi Axiata Limited managed to end up
with a Taka 155 core as profit which is 1.1% compared to the previous fiscal year despite the
COVID-19 pandemic. Previously the company reported earning on Taka 17 core of profit in
2019 with a 92% fall compared to 2018’s Taka 214.7 crore. In 2017 and 2016, these amounts
were Taka 284.3 core and Taka 389.2 crore respectively. According to the officials of Robi,
strict regulatory clauses and impose higher taxes are the critical causes of the slower growth of
Robi Axiata. According to Farhan Fardaus (2021) of bdnews24.com, Robi's value gain a 601%
raise in the first quarter 0f 2021 from Taka 10 per share to Taka 70.1 per share. According to
the latest audited financial report, the ‘Price to Earnings Ratio’ or P/E ratio for Robi is 2,337,
which is the highest in the market.

On the other hand, the market leader and main competitor, Grameen Phone, reported a
P/E ratio of 14.63. Robi Axiata joined the stock market on December 24, 2020, with the most
extensive initial public offerings ever. From the inception of the company in 1997, Robi Axiata
claimed to pay about Taka 26,621core to Bangladesh.

In forecasting of the sales of Robi Axiata Limited, two types of new mobile connections are
considered as a product;

1. Pre-Paid Connections
2. Post Paid Connections

The mathematical calculation has been accomplished using the ‘Microsoft Excel’ software
program of ‘Microsoft Office 360’.

5.1 Methods & Formulas of Forecasting
The quantitative method of forecasting has been used for forecasting the sales of Robi Axiata.
In quantitative forecasting, the trend has been analyzed in the following five categories

1. Simple Linear Regression


2. Two Period Simple Moving Average
3. Three Period Simple Moving Average
4. Exponential Smoothing
5. Weighted Moving Average

The Formula used for ‘Simple Linear Regression’ is;

The charts above are displaying the forecast for the Robi Pre-Paid connections. The value of
‘Mean Absolute Deviation is calculated for each type of forecasting method. The highest value
of the MAD is obtained in the ‘Three Period Moving Average’ method as 172.97 and the lowest
value of the MAD is obtained in the ‘Three Period Weighted Moving Average’ method 125.18.
The Value of ‘Alpha’ (α) was applied as 0.5 and 0.7 respectively. In the ‘Three Period
Weighted Moving Average’ the assigned weights are t1=0.7; t2=0.2; t3=0.1 and t1=0.5; t2=0.3;
t3=0.2 respectively for the first and second trials.

Analysis
After reviewing the table mentioned above, it can be seen that the ‘Three Period Weighted
Moving Average’ with the weights of t1=0.7; t2=0.2; t3=0.1 provides the most negligible value
of MAD (Mean Absolute Deviation) compared to all other methods apply. It can also be seen
that the forecast done by the Three Period Weighted Moving Average’ with t1=0.7; t2=0.2;
t3=0.1 weights are much closer to the actual sales data which is found earlier.

After considering all these, it can be claimed that the forecast done by using the ‘Three Period
Weighted Moving Average’ method with the weights t1=0.7; t2=0.2; t3=0.1 is the best method
of the forecast for Robi Pre-Paid connection sales and the forecast for February 2021 sales is
124300 units.

The charts above are displaying the forecast for the Robi Post-Paid connections. The value of
‘Mean Absolute Deviation is calculated for each type of forecasting method. The highest value
of the MAD is obtained in ‘1. Simple Linear Regression’ forecasting method as 292.48, and
the lowest MAD value is obtained in ‘Three Period Weighted Moving Average’ method as
204.08. The Value of ‘Alpha’ (α) was applied as 0.5 and 0.7 respectively. In the ‘Three Period
Weighted Moving Average’ the assigned weights are t1=0.7; t2=0.2; t3=0.1 and t1=0.5; t2=0.3;
t3=0.2 respectively for the first and second trial.

Analysis
After reviewing the table mentioned above, it can be seen that the ‘Three Period Weighted

‘Three Period Weighted Moving Average’ method with the weights t1=0.7; t2=0.2; t3=0.1 is
the best method of the forecast for Robi Post-Paid connection sales and the forecast for
February 2021 sales is 183700 units.

6. Limitations
This forecasting of Robi Axiata Limited has been completed in a limited time period
considering only two products of Robi to accomplish the course objectives of ‘Operations
Management.’ The Forecasted value can be improved if some more time is allocated; some
other service products sales data (E.g., Recharge, Internet Usages) is taken, and some more
periods instead of twelve (12) periods us considered.
