For a given site, if we can create a
chart that shows the areas of year
round shade and year round
sunshine, we can plan and design the
various elements for optimal
functioning.

Period of year when shading is required: March-July
Time duration when shading is required: 1pm-5pm
Azimuth, Altitude and HSA (Horizontal shading Angle) for each hour at that particular day.
For west facade, the lowest HSA is 5.24° at 5pm. Designing for this HSA would result in extremely
large shading device. Hence the shading may be designed for an HSA of 20.18°
Let us consider an opening of size 1500*1000mm for the living room.
Depth = width/tan(HSA)
D= 1500/tan(20.18°) = 4076.08mm
Shading by a single fin may result in a very deep shading. Instead considering 10 louvre sections of
150mm. Hence,
D= 150/tan(20.18°) = 407.60mm
The depth can be reduced by designing the louvers at an angle.
Reducing the depth to half and placing it at an angle of 60°. Thus the desired
