TASK C: SOLAR SHADING

1
For a given site, if we can create a
chart that shows the areas of year
round shade and year round
sunshine, we can plan and design the
various elements for optimal
functioning.

west and north-east side.

WEST
Period of year when shading is required: March-July
Time duration when shading is required: 1pm-5pm
Azimuth, Altitude and HSA (Horizontal shading Angle) for each hour at that particular day.

March 25/ West 1:00 PM 2:00 PM 3:00 PM 4:00 PM 5:00 PM

Azimuth 210.93° 236.31° 249.82° 258.35° 264.76°
Altitude 67.75° 57.94° 45.44° 31.99° 18.19°
HSA 59° 34° 20.18° 13.65° 5.24°

For west facade, the lowest HSA is 5.24° at 5pm. Designing for this HSA would result in extremely
large shading device. Hence the shading may be designed for an HSA of 20.18°
Let us consider an opening of size 1500*1000mm for the living room.
Depth = width/tan(HSA)
D= 1500/tan(20.18°) = 4076.08mm
Shading by a single fin may result in a very deep shading. Instead considering 10 louvre sections of
150mm. Hence,
D= 150/tan(20.18°) = 407.60mm
The depth can be reduced by designing the louvers at an angle.
Reducing the depth to half and placing it at an angle of 60°. Thus the desired
NORTH (Horizontal shading device)
Period of year when shading is required: March-July
Date: 25 March 2021
Time duration when shading is required: 8am-12pm
Azimuth, Altitude, VSA (Vertical shading angle) and HSA (Horizontal shading Angle)
for each hour at that particular day.
March 25/ North 8:00 AM 9:00 AM 10:00 AM 11:00 AM 12:00 PM
Azimuth 98.26° 105.51° 115.98° 134.18° 168.77°
Altitude 25.08° 38.75° 51.84° 63.36° 70.29°
HSA 98.26° 105.51° 115.98° 134.18° 168.77°
VSA 72.89° 71.5° 70.9° 70.6° 70.62°

VSA= tan^-1{tan(altitude)/cos(HSA)}

tan(altitude) 0.468 0.803 1.273 1.993 2.791

cos(HSA) -0.144 -0.438 -0.697 -0.697 -0.981
tan(altitude)/cos(HSA) -3.25 -3 -2.9 -2.85 -2.84
VSA 72.89° 71.5° 70.9° 70.6° 70.62° 8
Lowest VSA value is 70.6°. This designing a shading device
for VSA = 70.6°.
Considering an opening of 1500mm*1200mm, where
height=1200mm
For a single horizontal shade.
Depth= height/tan(VSA)
D= 1200/tan(70.6°)
D= 428.5= 430mm
