Learning Activity: Global Economic Institutions
With the help of the school administration, organize a school trip to and
familiarization tour of an international economic organization (Asian Development
Bank) or an International Company (Honda, McDonald's, etc.) Gather as much
information as you can during the tour. (But since it is impossible to have this just
go the web and accomplish these tasks:
1. research the origins and history of the institution you have chosen;
Personally, I choose KFC because it has franchisees throughout the world,
including the Philippines, and I really enjoy KFC.
KFC Corporation is the world's largest chicken fast-food operator,
developer, and franchisor. Until late 1997, KFC was a wholly owned subsidiary of
PepsiCo, Inc. KFC runs over 5,000 locations in the United States, nearly 60% of
which are franchisees. KFC operates about 3,700 restaurants worldwide, almost
two-thirds of which are franchised. Along with direct franchising and completely
owned operations, the company participates in joint partnerships and continues to
explore new avenues for growth in the increasingly competitive fast-food market.
In late 1997, the company anticipated becoming a completely owned subsidiary of
Tricon Global Restaurants, Inc., which would be formed as a result of PepsiCo's
restaurant holdings being spun off.
Harland Sanders started Kentucky Fried Chicken in Corbin, Kentucky.
Sanders was born in 1890 on a tiny farm near Henryville, Indiana. Sanders' mother
worked two jobs following his father's death in 1896. By the age of six, Sanders
had mastered the art of cooking for his younger brother and sister. Mrs. Sanders
remarried, and her new husband was not fond of Harland. Sanders dropped out of
school and home at the age of 12 to work as a farm laborer for four dollars a
month. At the age of 15, he quit his employment and worked as a painter, railroad
fireman, plowman, streetcar conductor, ferryboat operator, insurance salesman,
justice of the peace, and service-station operator.
Sanders opened a petrol station in Corbin, Kentucky, in 1929, and cooked in
the back room for his family and an odd customer. Sanders delighted in preparing
the foods taught to him by his mother: pan-fried chicken, country ham, fresh
veggies, and homemade biscuits. Sanders' popularity grew, and he finally relocated
across the street to a building that included a 142-seat restaurant, a motel, and a
fueling station.
During the 1930s, an image that would become globally recognized began to
take shape. Sanders received two honors: first, he was designated an honorary
Colonel of Kentucky by the state's governor; and second, he invented a novel,
rapid way of seasoning and pressure-frying chicken. Due to his area fame, Duncan
Hines' Adventures in Good Eating recommended the Harland Sanders Court and
Cafe in 1939.
Sanders Court and Cafe was Kentucky's first motel, but the Colonel was
compelled to close it during World War II, when gas restrictions reduced travel.
Sanders' hand was once again pushed upon reopening the motel following the war:
in the early 1950s, proposed Interstate 75 would completely bypass Corbin.
Sanders Cafe was appraised at $165,000, but the owner received only $75,000 at
auction, barely enough to cover his debts.
By the mid-1960s, however, KFC had become one of the first American
fast-food franchises to expand overseas, with locations in Canada, the United
Kingdom, Mexico, and Jamaica. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, it saw mixed
successes on the domestic front, as it was subjected to a succession of corporate
ownership changes by individuals with little or no experience in the restaurant
sector. KFC was sold in the early 1970s to liquor wholesaler Heublein, which was
later acquired by the R. J. Reynolds food and tobacco conglomerate, which then
sold the chain to PepsiCo. However, the brand proceeded to expand
internationally, becoming the first Western restaurant chain to establish in China in
1987. Since then, it has grown fast in China, which is currently the company's
largest market. PepsiCo split off its restaurant operations as Tricon Global
Restaurants, which was renamed Yum! Brands later on.
KFC's original product is pressure-fried chicken pieces seasoned with 11
herbs and spices according to Sanders' formula. The recipe's components are a
trade secret. Larger servings of fried chicken are served in a cardboard "bucket," a
tradition established by franchisee Pete Harman in 1957. Since the early 1990s,
KFC has expanded its menu to include more chicken products such as chicken
fillet sandwiches and wraps, salads and side dishes such as French fries and
coleslaw, as well as desserts and soft drinks, the latter of which is frequently
supplied by PepsiCo. KFC is best recognized for their tagline "It's Finger Lickin'
Good!" "Nobody makes chicken better than KFC!" and "So good!"
2. map the international connections it has created;
This is a list of countries where KFC restaurants are located. As of 2021,
KFC operated over 25,000 restaurants in 145 countries and territories worldwide.
In 1952, the first KFC restaurant debuted in the United States. The first
international franchise was created in 1965 in the United Kingdom. [reference
required] By the early 1970s, a substantial number of Caribbean and established
Western markets had entered. From the mid-1970s to the 1980s, the company
expanded throughout the Middle East and created Asian markets. China joined in
1987. In the early 1990s, the company expanded into the majority of Europe and
South America. The company's most recent expansion has been into Africa, where
it is targeting the continent's increasing middle class.
KFC's major markets include China (over 7,900 locations), the United States
(4,062 locations), Japan (1,131 locations), Russia (over 1000 locations), South
Africa (914 locations), the United Kingdom (909 locations), Malaysia (718
locations), Thailand (717 locations), Australia (653 locations), and Canada (over
1000 locations) (639 stores).
Yum International, located in Louisville, Kentucky, is responsible for global
operations. Yum! often awards a master franchise to a local operator or invests in a
joint venture with that operator. Yum! International manages KFC directly in 11
countries, including China, Russia, and India. The largest franchisees worldwide
range from huge local corporations such as Jardine Matheson and Doosan Group to
organizations founded particularly to operate restaurant franchises, such as
AmRest. The majority of franchisees in Japan, Malaysia, and Indonesia are
publicly traded firms. On the other hand, franchises may be operated by a single
individual in smaller areas, such as some Caribbean islands.

KFC Philippines Achievements Kentucky Fried Chicken® has gone a long
way since its inception in the Philippines in 1966—from Colonel Sanders' humble
beginnings serving travelers in the back of a fueling station to selling chicken by
the bucket in 1957. KFC continues to provide some of its most delectable
innovations today, including the KFC Zinger, the KFC Double Down, and the KFC
Chizza.
With the rise of delectable and novel food products, the business expanded
in size. Filipinos throughout the country yearned for KFC to the point where KFC
launched its 100th location in Taft PGH in 1999. The firm then announced in 2006
that it had produced a massive logo viewable from space. KFC also opened a
remodeled location in Market Market that year. KFC earned the hearts of many in
the Philippines when it hosted the CHAMPS competition, earning 11 honors in
2010 and 9 trophies in 2015. Additionally, it was in 2010 that KFC opened its
200th location in Lacson, Bacolod.KFC took a giant step forward in 2014 when it
brought local celebrity favorites Daniel Padilla, the Kramer Family, and Kathryn
Bernardo. This represented a new milestone for the company, bringing it closer to
the hearts of Filipinos. Kentucky Fried Chicken has come a long way since its
inception. However, it has only begun.

The Philippines

How does this institution influence global economic activity.

KFC is one of the world's largest fast food chains. KFC has grown at a faster
rate than the majority of other brands, extending its footprint by 71% in the last six
years. With 18,000 locations in more than 115 countries, they naturally sell a wide
variety of products on a daily basis. Because their fried chicken is their pride and
pleasure, it is their responsibility to ensure that every aspect of their chicken—from
farm to finger—is carefully scrutinized for quality and sustainability. They create
our meals in the same manner as the Colonel did—with actual cooks, utilizing
freshly prepared, high-quality ingredients, and unflinching quality control. The
institution is dedicated to transparency, to communicating the story behind our
finger-lickin' fantastic food and to responsibly labeling it. Additionally, they
declared that they believe in aiding local communities worldwide through their
KFC Foundations, Add Hope programs, global volunteerism activities, and
Harvest initiative. KFC promotes a heart-led culture internally through leadership
initiatives such as Heart styles. Additionally, they believe in establishing an
entirely inclusive work atmosphere, one that values, seeks out, and develops
diversity of thought and perspective.

How does it affect economics in the Philippines?

The creation of KFC in the Philippines has had a significant impact on the
local economy, creating jobs for both KFC and the numerous suppliers of products,
which include poultry breeders and growers, their feed providers, fanners, and
others. Since 2009, KFC Philippines has been a World Food Program partner of
the United Nations (WFP). Over the years, the alliance has provided food for
millions of people living in conflict-affected parts of Mindanao. From November
2012 to January 2013, KFC will bring delight to children beneficiaries of the
WHRP in Mindanao once again with the debut of the Fully Loved Meal. For just
Php 99, KFC's Fully Loved Meal includes the brand's popular 1-piece chicken with
rice, mashed potatoes, and soft drink. More importantly, every time a meal is
purchased, Php 5 is automatically contributed to the WHRP. "KFC Philippines is a
values-driven organization." Sharing, and more crucially, where it is most needed,"
Cess Cuartero, Category Manager at KFC Philippines, remarked. "In keeping with
the season's spirit of giving, we are happy to launch our Fully Loved Meal. Not
only do guests enjoy our distinctive dishes, but they also share them with children
aided by the World Hunger Relief Program," Cuartero remarked. Only dine-in and
take-out clients may order the Fully Loved Meal. Those who are unable to
purchase the Fully Loved Meal can still share their benefits with the less fortunate
through the campaign's canister initiative, which encourages people to donate Php
10 to feed a kid.
