Quarter 3 – Module 1:
Safety Precautions
Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners,
can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-
step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each

SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you
need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of
the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check
your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that you
will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can
best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part
of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests. And
read the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the
tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.
What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you master
the Safety Precautions in working with computer devices and equipment. The scope
of this module permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The
language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are
arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order in which you
read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using.

The set of modules was designed and written to help you be familiar with the different
concept and develop the different skills required in the specialization Computer
Hardware Servicing. This module particularly focuses on how to plan and prepare
for diagnosis of computer systems errors

After going through this module, you are expected to follow OHS procedures in
planning and preparing diagnosis of computer systems errors.

1. Define Personal Protective Equipment (PPE);

2. Enumerate and explain the different types of PPE; and,
3. Enumerate and state the functions of the different tools and equipment under
each type of PPE.

Lesson

1 Safety Precautions

Safety precautions in the diagnosis and configuration of computers include the

proper safety gear or tools and equipment you need to prepare before doing a job.
This means that you should know the personal protective equipment (PPE) you need
to have before starting work.

In this module, you will learn all about Personal Protective Equipment and its
importance in working with computers.

What’s In

Before we proceed to our topic, let us look back at the previous lesson. This will test
if you remember what you learned about the lesson you have finished.
Activity 1: Am I True, Am I False
Write TRUE if the statement states a fact and FALSE if not. Write your answers on
a separate sheet of paper.
1. When attaching cables, never force a connection.
2. BIOS instruct the computer on how to perform a number of basic functions such
as booting and keyboard control.
3. The external visual inspection consists of a quick inspection of the interior of the
computer.
4. Disk management tools help detect and correct disk errors.
5. The most basic test is to switch the system on to check it starts without errors.

Did you get them all correct? Great job!

Notes to the Teacher

This module will help guide the students in becoming familiar with Personal Protective
Equipment and its importance in ensuring safety while working with computers.

Activity 2: Unscramble Us

Unscramble the set of letters below to form words related to the lesson.

WEROP ROPSELAN STICAT

PORTECVITE VUCAMU LIPERS

DEPRESCOMS RETAGULOR
PENQUITEM EVICDE

Were you able to decode all of them? Well done! Let us now proceed to our
discussion.

What is It

What is PPE?

Personal protective equipment includes protective apparel, helmets, goggles, or other

attires or equipment designed as defense of the wearer's body from injury or
infection. The hazards addressed by personal protective equipment include physical,
electrical, heat, chemicals, biohazards, and airborne particulate matter.

There are three (3) types of Personal Protective Equipment. These are

1. Anti-static devices
2. Power surge protectors
3. Personal equipment

Q3_TLE(CHS)9_ Module 1
Anti – Static Devices

An antistatic device is any device which reduces, diminishes, or otherwise

inhibits electrostatic discharge, or ESD. Electrostatic discharge is the accumulation
or discharge of static electricity. ESD can damage electrical components and even
ignite flammable liquids and gases.

Anti – Static Wrist Strap

An antistatic wrist strap, also known as ESD wrist

strap or ground bracelet, is device used to safely
ground a person while working on very sensitive
electronic equipment, to prevent the accumulation of
static electricity on their body, which can result in ESD,

Anti – Static Mat

An antistatic floor mat, also known as ESD Mats

(Electrically Static Dissipative Mats) or ground mat, is a
device designed to help eliminate static electricity. It
maintains a controlled low resistance. It helps prevent
damage on sensitive electronic equipment and ignition of
explosive chemicals by dissipating or driving away any
electrical discharge before it can harm the item. https://www.indiamart.com/proddetail/esd-

Anti – Static Bag

This is used to store or transfer electronic components

which may be prone to damage caused by ESD.
An antistatic bag is specially designed to protect
sensitive electrical components from interacting with
static electricity. It is made of plastic polyethylene

Anti – Static Spray

Antistatic spray is a liquid used to eliminate static electricity,

to prevent static cling. However, it cannot be used on certain
equipment, such as some monitor screens.

Power Surge Protectors

A surge protector (surge suppressor) is a device designed to protect electrical devices

from voltage spikes. They are designed to prevent sudden power surges from
intermittent power sources. A surge protector attempts to limit the power supplied
to an electric device by either stalling or shorting to ground any unwanted voltages
above a safe threshold.

AVR or Auto-Voltage Regulator

An AVR is a solid state electronic device used to

automatically maintain generator output terminal
voltage at an established value. As the generator load
or operating temperature changes, the AVR will try

A UPS is an electrical apparatus which

provides emergency power to a load when
the main power or input power source
fails.
