Basic Concepts of Electricity (Part
III)
Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners,
can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-
step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each

SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you
need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of
the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check
your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that you
will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can
best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part
of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests. And
read the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the
tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.
What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you master
the basic concepts of electricity needed in working with computer devices and
equipment. The scope of this module permits it to be used in many different learning
situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students.
The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order
in which you read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now
using.

The set of modules was designed and written to help you be familiar with the different
concept and develop the different skills required in the specialization Computer
Hardware Servicing. This module particularly focuses on how to diagnose and
configure computer systems and networks of computer system errors.

After going through this module, you are expected to diagnose and configure
computer systems and networks of computer system errors (TLE_ICTCS9DT-IIIf-j-

Basic Concepts of
1 Electricity
This module will help you have fundamental knowledge about electricity. It will equip
you with the basic knowledge on electrical terms.

What’s In

Before we proceed to our topic, let us look back at the previous lesson. This will test
if you remember what you learned about the lesson you have finished.
Activity 1: Who Am I
Read each item carefully. Fill in the blanks with the appropriate word/phrase. Write
your answers on a separate sheet of paper.
1. means that the flow of electric charge that does not change direction.
2. In direct current, the flow of electric charge is follows .
3. AC is an electric current that periodically its direction.
4. AC electricity is produced by generators from a .
5. Alternating currents are waves, which allows them to change in time.

Check your answers from the key to correction. Did you get

Were you able to decode all of them? Well done! Let us now proceed to our discussion.

What is It

Electric Circuit

An electric circuit is the pathway for

transmitting the electric current. This includes
a device or equipment which provides energy to
the charged particles composing the current,
such as a battery or a generator. Other
equipment or devices that use current, such

as lamps, electric motors, or computers and the
connecting wires or transmission lines are
considered as electric circuit.

4 Q3_TLE(CHS)9_ Module 8
Electric circuits can be classified in two ways. A direct-current circuit transports
current that follows one direction only. An alternating-current circuit transfers
pulsating current back and forth several times each second, just like in most
household circuits.

presents a simple electric
circuit diagram, with its
different components.

Components of Circuit

1. Load

An electrical load is a component or portion of

a circuit which consumes electric power. This
is opposite to a power source, such as a
generator or a battery. Some examples of loads
in an electric power circuit are appliances and
lights. The term load may also refer to
the energy consumed by a circuit. This is
commonly represented by a bulb or any https://slideplayer.com/slide/13355243/
electrical device or equipment that consumes
electricity.

2. Power Supply

This is an electrical device which

delivers electric power to an electrical load.
The main function of a power supply is to
convert an electric current from the source to
the correct current, voltage and frequency to https://qureshiuniversity.com/electricity-battery.html
energize the load. It is commonly represented
by a battery or a cell.

3. Switch

This is an electrical component which has the

ability to connect or disconnect the conducting
path in an electrical circuit. This action may

interrupt the electric current or divert it from open-switch-wiring-diagram-symbols
one conductor to another. It is a device that
opens or closes a circuit.

5 Q3_TLE(CHS)9_ Module 8
Types of Circuit

1. Open Circuit

An open circuit is an electrical circuit wherein the continuity is broken and the
current does not flow. It is a type of circuit which has an open path for current to
flow, thus the current cannot flow in open circuit.

The switch is said to be OPEN if the current cannot flow into the circuit and the bulb is OFF.

2. Closed Circuit

A closed circuit has a complete track for current to flow. It is a type of circuit which
has a closed path for current to flow, thus, the current can flow in a closed circuit.

The switch is said to be CLOSED if the current can flow into the circuit and the bulb is ON.

3. Short Circuit

A short circuit is a low-resistance path, which normally

occurs unintentionally. It sidesteps part of a circuit.
This can occur when two open or bare wires in a
circuit touch one another. The part of the circuit
sidestepped by the short circuit stops functioning, and
a big amount of current could start to flow. This can
produce a lot of heat in the wires and eventually cause
fire. For safety, circuit breakers and
fuses automatically open the circuit when there is an
extreme current. https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-

charged particles composing the current, such as a battery or a generator.
2. An electrical load is commonly represented by a bulb or any electrical device or
