Quarter 3 – Module 5: Safety
Precautions (Occupational
Health and Safety)
Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners, can continue
your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions, exercises, and discussions are
carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by- step as you
discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM. This will tell
you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need to ask your facilitator or your
teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to
answer the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test.
We trust that you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also provided to our
facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best help you on your home-based
learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of this SLM. Use
a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests. And read the instructions carefully
before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks in this
module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.
What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you master the application of
Occupational health and Safety in working with computer devices and equipment. The scope of this
module permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The language used recognizes the
diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the
course. But the order in which you read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are
now using.

The set of modules was designed and written to help you be familiar with the different concept and
develop the different skills required in the specialization Computer Hardware Servicing. This module
particularly focuses on how to diagnose and configure computer systems and networks of computer
system errors.

After going through this module, you are expected to diagnose and configure computer systems and
networks of computer system errors (TLE_ICTCS9DT-IIIf-j- 2).

1. Define Occupational Health and Safety;

2. Enumerate and explain personal safety while working with PCs; and,

3. Apply OHS procedures in diagnosing and configuring computer systems and networks.

1 Q3_TLE(CHS)9_ Module 5
What I Know

Read each item carefully. Write YES if the statement shows application of safety procedures and NO
if not. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper.
1. George washed his hands after going to the comfort room, then plugged in the power source.
2. Dianne prepared the anti-static mat so that she can place the computer on it while diagnosing what is
wrong.
3. Arthur ran around a set of cables lying on the ground.
4. Marco asked his teacher to help him pull out the CPU fan from the computer case.
5. Patrick unplugged the power source before starting to work on the computer unit.

Check your answer using the key to corrections.

Were you able to get all the correct answers? If yes, then that means you already know much about
our topic in this module.

If not, it is alright. Because that means you will learn something new from this module.

Lesson
Safety Precautions
1
Safety precautions in the diagnosis and configuration of computers include the proper safety gear or
tools and equipment you need to prepare before doing a job. This means that you should know the
personal protective equipment (PPE) you need to have before starting work.

In this module, you will learn all about Occupational Health and Safety and its importance in working
with computers.

2 Q3_TLE(CHS)9_ Module 5
What’s In

Before we proceed to our topic, let us look back at the previous lesson. This will test if you remember
what you learned about the lesson you have finished.

Activity 1: Who Am I

Identify the computer system error being described. Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.
1. These are quite dangerous types of errors that can be present on a computer.
2. These may cause an unstable or unresponsive system, leaving no possible option but to click the
RESET button.
3. These are due to corrupted hardware, especially RAM module malfunction and bad sectors on
hard disks.
4. The solution is simply by reinstalling or updating the drivers.
5. These are characterized by short beep sounds from the tiny internal speaker of the motherboard.

Check your answers from the key to correction. Did you get

them all correct? Great job!

Notes to the Teacher

This module will help guide the students in becoming familiar with Personal Protective Equipment and its
importance in ensuring safety while working with computers.

Activity 2: Unscramble Us

Unscramble the set of letters below to form words related to the lesson.

SILENT RYD ACTIOUSU

FASTEY STANCESIA

Check your answer using the key to corrections.

Were you able to decode all of them? Well done! Let us now proceed to our discussion.

What is It

Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) refers to the rules, policies, procedures and actions whose goal
is to protect the health, safety and welfare of all people in a certain workplace. The Occupational Safety
and Health Standards was formulated in 1978 in compliance with the constitutional mandate to
safeguard the worker’s social and economic well-being as well as his physical safety and health.

Every worker has a right to a safe and healthy job and to work in an environment that allows them to
live an economically and socially productive life. Safety practices and procedures should be learned
ahead and always adhered to when working with any electrical device including personal computers
and peripherals.

Personal safety while working with PC’s

Listen attentively.

Before starting any activity, listen attentively to your teacher’s instruction

to make sure accidents or any unwanted events will not happen in the
workplace.

Keep everything dry.

Make sure you are dry before working on the computer to avoid
electrocution. Also, do not bring liquids such as drinking water inside the
computer laboratory to avoid spilling over electrical devices.
