Roadtrip shawl is a semi‐circular shawl knit from the top‐down with raglan
style mirrored increases, a simple lace pattern, and ruffled edging. The
shawl is simple enough to knit while on a roadtrip (or other long and
potentially monotonous experience), yet the lace pattern is sufficiently
interesting to keep one’s attention and help the time pass.
Pattern Difficulty: Adventurous Beginner Æ Pattern uses increases, decreases, and following a stitch pattern over a
large number of stitches.
Materials Needed
Yarn: Approximately 518 yards (474 meters) in fingering weight yarn. Yarn used for shawl pictured:
Æ Knit Picks Palette (fingering, 100% wool, 231 yards (211 meters) per 50 gram skein) Æ 3 skeins in Peapod
colorway.
Needles: US 4 (3.5mm) 40” / 100 cm circular needle, or size to achieve gauge.
Gauge: 22 stitches and 24 rows = 4” (10 cm) in stockinette stitch after
blocking. Take time to check gauge.
Notions: stitch markers (17), T‐pins (optional, for blocking) Length:
14” / 36 cm
Finished Measurements (see schematic to the right):

Roadtrip Shawl
Marker Re‐Positioning Æ As you work through this pattern, increases are worked every RS row. Once there are
enough increased stitches to incorporate into the stitch pattern, you will adjust the placement of the markers as
described below. You should have an extra stitch marker during this process.
• Next WS Row (Marker Re‐Positioning Row): k1, sm, * p2, pm, p16, remove m, work Lace A to m, remove m, p16, pm,
p2, sm, ** (5 times), sm, k1.
• Next RS Row: k1, sm * k1, m1r, k1, sm, work Lace A across 15 sts, k1, work Lace A across 15 sts, k1, work Lace A across
15 sts, sm, k1, m1l, k1 sm, ** (5 times) end k1.
• Next WS Row: k1, sm, *p to m, work Lace A across 15 sts, p1, work Lace A across 15 sts, p1, work Lace A across 15 sts,
sm, p to m, sm, **(5 times) end k1.
• Continue in pattern established by last 2 rows until there are 17 sts between the first 2 markers, ending after a WS
Row (total 407 sts).
3 4
(In the next row, you will remove the 10 markers used to mark Lace A, but will
keep the 6 markers used to mark the increases, however, there will no longer be
any increases to work. See updated diagram to the right.)
• Next RS Row : k1, sm, * k1, [work Lace A across 15 sts, k1] (5 times to the
marker for the increases), sm,** end k1. 2 5
• Next WS Row: k1, sm, * p1, [work Lace A across 15 sts, p1] (5 times to the
marker for the increases), sm, ** end k1.
• Continue in pattern established by last two rows until you have completed
all remaining rows of Lace A, ending after a WS Row. 1 6
• Ruffle Row 1 (RS): * k1, y0, ** end k1 (removing markers).
• Ruffle Row 2 (Ws): k all sts.
• Repeat Ruffle Rows 1 and 2 once more.
• Bind off as follows: k2, * (insert the left needle into the front of the 2 sts on the right needle and knit them
together‐‐1 st remains on right needle), k1, * until all sts have been bound off. Break yarn.
Finishing
• Weave in all ends.
• Block Æ Immerse finished shawl in lukewarm water. Gently
press and roll in a towel to remove excess water. Spread shawl
out to dry on a blocking surface (a blocking board or a large
towel). Smooth out stitches and gently tug to even out lace. Use
T‐pins along the edges of shawl to open up the stitch patterning
and ensure it dries flat.
