lntroduction
fabric is a square or rectangular steel welded mesh to be used in reinforced concrete elements' lt is
=#
manufactured from hard drawn steel wire in sheets and complying with B.S. 4483 : 1985 and M.S. 145 :2006
with specified characteristic yield strength of 485 N/mm2. The main and cross wire of the fabric are welded
rigidly together by an auto-electro welding machine at constant spacing.

Principal Application
€# fabric is especially suitable for use as reinforcement in suspended and non-suspended concrete floor
slabs under various types of loading. lt is also used in footings, walls, retaintng walls, road pavements, tanks,
swimming pools, concrete pipes, girder wrappinqprecast concrete units and other structures where
substitution of high tensile deformed steel bar with €ffi fabrics are possible.

Details of Steel Fabric Lapping

The intersections between wires of
--a fabric are welded and will develop
==
a weld shear sirength of 250 N/mm2.
When casted in concrete, the
embedment of one weld of the cross
wires will achieve ai least half of the
Half Yield Strength Lap-Splice
specified characteristic yield strength of
wire.

Furthermore, additional anchorage are

developed from the bond between the
ribbed wire surface and concrete.

The standard reference refers to the specific pitch and diameter of wires to be used as shown in the following
table. As such, the alphabets A, B, C and DA in front of the reference number signify the type of main & cross
wires pitches while the digits after the alphabets denote the main & cross wire diameter.

Wire Rod Cold Rolling Straightening & Cutting

Advantages
-tl fabrics provide engineers and contractors a readrly available source of economic reinforcement for
==
reinforced concrete works.

Its main advantages are:-

. €F
-aa fabrics are manufactured from hard drawn steelwires which have a breaking strength of not less than
51QN/mm2 and a minimum 9,2yp oro:f str_e_sg of 485 N/mm2, compared to mild steel of 250 N/mm2 and
high tensile steel bar of 460 N/mm2.

. Consistent quality of material used with wires of uniform properties and accurate diameters.

. €ffi
-Lal fabrics provide positive mechanical anchorage through the welding of the rigidly, connected cross
wire at intersections.

o €ffi
::rt
-fa fabrics assure the required area of steel at the correct spacings provided and hence, time will be
reduced on site supervision.

. €f
-a) fabrics are simple to fix and remain in position when properly suppofied during concreting.
1"
r Like mild steel, -= fabrics are adaptable to be bent and shaped to suit the particular job and yet able to
maintain its rigidity after bending.

. The welds provide good anchorage for the concrete which in turn will control and limit any crack line
$J
developed.
ry
r .
tp Minimal cutting, bending and tying of the mesh is required compared to steel bars, Hence, less specialised
labour and time are required.

M . Wire mesh is less susceptible to unauthorised removal from site or pilferage.

q
_-L-
î . €Ê fabrics permit enhanced speed and economy in construction which will result in savings of labour
costs and wasTage.
