3. Write down the procedure of applying for a new Australian passport below:
1) Step 1: Gather original documents

You’ll generally need:

a. your full birth certificate

b. evidence that you’re an Australian citizen
c. identity documents with your photo, signature and current address
d. documents that prove any change of name or change of gender.

You’ll also need to bring the documents when you lodge your application. We’ll
return the documents to you on the spot. Don’t bring copies – we only accept
originals.

2) Step 2: Complete your application

If going online is not an option for you, just ask for a blank application form at
a participating Australia Post outlet(link is external) or an Australian
diplomatic or consular mission(link is external). For streamlined
renewal without going online, call us on 131 232 or contact an Australian
diplomatic or consular mission(link is external). We’ll confirm that you
qualify, and send you a pre-filled form by mail or by email.
3) Step 3: Print your application
If you apply online in Australia, our system will generate an application
 You need to print the checklist.

 The checklist tells you all the original documents to bring when you
lodge it.
4) Step 4: Get passport photos

Make sure they comply with our photo guidelines.

This is what we require:

 Two identical, good quality colour prints, less than six months old,
produced using dye sublimation, not from an inkjet printer
 No retouching of any kind (including removal of background, moles,
wrinkles or scars)
 Clear, focused image with no marks or 'red eye'
 Plain white or light grey background that contrasts with your face
 Uniform lighting (no shadows or reflections), with appropriate brightness
and contrast to show natural skin tone
 Face centred and looking at the camera straight on; not tilted in any
direction
 Hair off your face, so that the edges of your face are visible
 Eyes open, mouth closed
 Neutral expression (not smiling, laughing or frowning)

5) Step 5: Lodge your application and pay the fee

Lodge your application and pay the passport fee at a participating Australia

Post outlet(link is external) or an Australian diplomatic or consular
mission(link is external).

In some locations, you may need to book an appointment.

Bring your application checklist or form, your photos, and whatever original
documents you need.

6) Step 6: We’ll tell you when your passport is ready

When your passport is ready, we’ll send you an email.

Allow up to 6 weeks to receive your passport after you lodge the application.

If you’re in a hurry, we have options for urgent applications.
