CASE STUDY 9 (Business Plan)

Lyza Jocelle C. Pacibe

Jade is a young professional; she is 5 years in the corporate world. She properly manages
her money, she manages her personal expenses and able to invest in different kind of funds. This
is the very reason why last year, she recently launched a new business of her, a baking industry.
Jade loves to bake pastries, and with the practice she earned and accreditation she received from
TESDA, she built a simple bakeshop where she hired employees, and she trained the baker by
herself.
Looking back to the first-year operation of her business, she noticed that their annual profit is
enough only for the expenses of her business and compensation of her employees. She wonders
what is the problem, since a lot of her customers love their products and they also gain customer
loyalty in just one year operation.
Jade met her friend Mary, who is also a business owner. They unwind for one day, but before the
day ends, Jane shared her thoughts regarding the situation of her business. Mary listened
carefully to her friend, as she wants to help Jane knowing her friend is just a new to business
industry. Mary realized that Jane’s business plan is not accurate to the performance of her
business, so she advised Jade to look back to the whole performance of the company and she
must check her objectives and goals, and of course innovation of product is a must annually. Jade
listened to the advice of Mary, and after a year of operating her bakeshop, she gained a
reasonable profit which truly compensate her expenses. By that, Jane is checking her business
plan quarterly to check if the performance of her business is keeping on track on their business
plan.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

1. What do you think is the reason why the business plan of Jade’s bakeshop does not meet?
2. Do you think Jade should only ask her friend about this matter?

COURSE/S OF ACTION:

1. The business plan of Jade’s bakeshop does not meet for some reason that the business is
still new and the employees were still adjusting on the services and performance they
rendered. Moreover, it is kind normal to all new business which needs adoption. Jade
being the sole owner of her business, must review regularly her business plan, as it is
their guide in achieving their objectives, goals, and can at least be sure that their business
is doing well. Moreover, business plan is the foundation of her business as this is where
all of them should look back whenever performance is rendered, to ensure that their
business activities were kept aligned in their business’ perspectives.
2. Jade should asked her employees regarding their problem, though her employees do not
contribute to the management, they somehow observe the operation of the business and
they were the one who performs the day-to-day activities of their business. Moreover, her
employees can stimulate some changes that is good for the business. Asking her friend
directly would like not having a good relationship with her employees. Remember, in a
business, that the members of the business are the only one helping hand of the owner,
because they are actually seeing the performance of the business.
SOLUTION AND RECOMMENDATION:

1. Business plan is indeed an essential tool for a business because it serves as a guide for
business owner in managing his business. The business activities should focus on
attaining the objectives and goals of the business which were obtained in the business
plan, this is to make sure that the business is doing great and achieving its objectives and
goals, through this the business can achieve competitive advantage which is strength of
the business. On Jade’s bakeshop, she must stick to her business plans, if there is
anything she should change, she can only change the business once the business reach the
end of its operating cycle, so that they will check if their business plan is attainable or
not. Moreover, Jade should ensure that day-to-day business activities were aligned on
business plans, to make sure that her business is profitable. Also, the business plan should
communicate properly to her employees, she must give some advice and action on how
her employees can achieve the business plan.

2. Jade being the owner, should learn to communicate first to her employees. She must have
a monthly meeting with her employees regarding their monthly operation, checking if the
business plans were halfway achieved. In that way, Jade can build strong relationship
among her employees which is a good aspect of her business, because her employees
maybe comfortable at workplace and can reach out to her if there is anything out-of-
control of the business. This will entail a positive impact to Jade’s bakeshop, as she and
her employees collaborate with each other in making her business successful and grow
bigger.
