WHAT’S AN LED VIDEO WALL?

An LED video wall consists of several monitors which are grouped together to create one wide screen’s
image. That has a range of advantages. For example, the pixel pitch and resolution and consistency are
greatly improved, and perhaps more importantly, it is incomparable in its breadth and engaging
capacity.

Top-Notch Content Quality:

It ensures that the content is not only increased in size, but also in its resolution and efficiency, which can be easily measured by
summing up the width and height of all screens in your LED video wall.

Heavy-duty Processing Capacity:

Running a video wall requires more processing power, but that extra processing oomph is another advantage to the technology.
Professional video wall controllers, they are comparatively heavier than those found on single displays. As such, they can not only
drive content on a larger scale, but can drive more content at a smoother rate than single displays can.

But, the real question is: how to choose the right LED display screen? Yes, it’s really important to figure out the requirements before
finally buying the LEDs. Don’t think that it is going to be an easy one since the process of selecting an LED is always tiring and
daunting. So, in order to make it a bit reasonable and easy with the efforts, it’s important to seek answers to the following three
questions:

1. Where they are applied?

2. What environment is it good for?
3. What is a good viewing distance?
4. What is a good pixel pitch of led display?

Where they are applied?

To begin with, it is necessary to know the area where they will be applied and why. Since LEDs are
versatile and can fit in a number of scenarios, companies can replace traditional media with them,
thereby feeling no need to print or use outdated display technologies like projector screens and LCD
panels.
Below are a few scenarios where LEDs are commonly used and needed to be installed:
 Ceiling Hung: When it comes to indoor or semi-indoor use, ceiling hung installation of LEDs is the
best as they do not need any physical space, thereby saving a lot of space. Apart from indoors,
these installations are also good for locations like entrances, passageways, venues, stations etc.
However, make sure that these screens are small to medium sized because this installation cannot
bear more weight.
 Wall-Embedded: This type of installation is also good for both outdoor and indoor applications. This
method needs flushing or embedding of the LED display with the wall to enhance overall aesthetics
of the space. The only thing to consider is the designing and planning stage for LED screen
installation because it needs support from a steel frame.
 Wall-Mounted: It is one of the famous and commonly known methods for outdoor and indoor
installations. It requires a custom-made steel frame bracket to mount on the wall to give support to
the LED display panels.
 Single or Double Pole: This type of installation is needed for advertising boards or IP68 outdoor led
display. Apart from the steel poles, a large concrete foundation has to be made underneath so that
the whole structure stays in its place for as long as it is needed.
 Overhead Screen: Also referred to as overhead panel (OHP), LED display screens need to be
installed on a standalone steel frame so that it can even be part of an existing pedestrian bridge.
 Mobile Application: This method has got popular over the couple of years as it involves installation
of a complete display system on movable vehicles like vans, trucks or buses. They are usually
needed for display advertisements or backdrops with sound reinforcement system.
What environment is it good for?

Weather Resistant Capability: The thing that creates a major difference between outdoor and indoor LED display is the
ability to resist weather conditions. It is usually measured in an Ingress Protection (IP) Rating, whose details are given
below:

 Brightness Difference: Another thing between outdoor and indoor LED screen display panels is their brightness that is
measured in nits or cd/m2. Higher measurement ensures more visibility in strong light and vice versa. With that being said,
outdoor LED screens are provided with high brightness, which range between 4,500 nits and 7,000 nits. On the contrary,
indoor LED screens do not have such requirement because they do not need much light.

What is a good viewing distance?

After getting to know about the method of application and an appropriate environmental conditions,
the last yet an important consideration is the viewing distance. It is necessary for the person to
determine can a suitable distance so as to figure out the pixel pitch accordingly. Keep in mind that
this information is necessary otherwise there would not be the desired visual clarity.
The rule of thumb is to go for a pixel pitch (measured in mm) with respect to the viewing distance
(measured in m). for instance, a 4m viewing distance requires LED display screen to be 4mm max.
Ideally, buyers should go for small pixel pitch like 1mm so that there will be optimum visual clarity. If
someone decides to go for higher pixel pitch i.e. 10mm, then the image will be pixelated.

To calculate the appropriate pixel pitch, use this formula:

Viewing distance (minimum in meter) = Pixel pitch (mm)

Pixel pitch (mm) x 3 x 1000 = Optimal viewing distance (mm)

Power Consumption

Apart from the above 3 questions, power consumption is another considerable factor. Buyers must
know electricity consumption by LED display screen before buying since every type or product
gives a different result. For that, they have to pay attention of the power requirements of each pixel
and calculate the total amount according to the number of pixels in the screen.

Conclusion

After reading this article, a person will have enough information to come up with a suitable LED
video panel that will not only make their visual experience amazing but also save an amount by
controlling electricity bills.

What is Pixel Pitch

The distance from the center of the LED cluster/package to the next LED package, beside, below
and above it measured in millimeters (mm) is referred to as pixel pitch. These packages are usually
mounted on backplates and circuit boards, which are called modules.

These modules are grouped together to create larger display surfaces that are required for LED
video walls. As for the cost, the wiring, manufacturing process and tiny LED lights in the modules are
the important components.

Viewing and Pitch Distance

There is no doubt in saying that LED pitch is important while considering viewing distance. In case a
person gets close to the display screen, he/she can see tiny pixels and gaps between them. That is
the time when viewing experience is not satisfactory. So, what is the appropriate viewing distance?
Precisely, it is when the visuals are smooth and there are no gaps.

While there are multiple theories about an appropriate ratio and measurement, most of the experts
agree that 1mm is a good pixel pitch with 8ft viewing distance. The reason why viewing distance is
getting a lot of importance is that it’s not just about the picture quality but project planning and
expenses also need its assistance. For instance, one would admire a 1 mm pitch but if it is used at a
place where the audience is 30 feet away, then there would be no point in investing on such a
premium-priced product. A 3mm LED display screen can get the job done with the similar
outcomes.

Nowadays, manufacturers use any of the following 3 methodologies to determine a reasonable

viewing distance:

1. 10x Rule: It is the easiest method to estimate the Visual Acuity Distance. The calculation is
done as: 10 x Pixel Pitch = Estimate Viewing Distance. The resultant is usually in feet.
2. Retina Distance or Visual Acuity: Referred to as a formulated method of calculation, it
involves an acceptable distance to which, a 20/20 eyesight individual can go without
complaining about pixelated image. The formula is: 3438 x pixel pitch (in feet).
3. Average Comfortable Viewing Distance: Manufacturers used to estimate a comfortable
viewing distance based on their observations and research. This subjective estimation is
based on content resolution, type of content and person’s eyesight.
Indoor full color LED display the difference between P3 and P4
in recent years, the full color LED display screen into indoor hd display area, it may be said is a leader in
the field of hd, but according to the standard of visual display, P4 hard 1 square meter display the ideal
requirements. As said earlier, P3 single m resolution to twenty-five thousand points, the higher the
technological breakthroughs achieved 1 square meters super clear show the effect of the pursuit, LED
approach is another super clear cut area. So what are the difference between the indoor LED display P3
and P4?

1, first of all, P3 and P4, behind the p value is the spacing between two pixels or lamp ( The unit is mm) ,
so their spacing between 3 mm and 4 mm. So the points on the same area, P3, P4 is less, such as 1 ㎡
area P4 pixel point is about 62500, but only 111111 on P3.

2, full color LED display point spacing is smaller, the higher pixel, screen resolution, the better. But point
spacing is smaller, the production difficulty will increase, so the same body types and configurations,
prices are higher than P3 P4.

3, the greater the distance between point and suitable for the farther the distance, in general, there can
be a formula to calculate the best viewing distance = point spacing/( 0. 3 to 0. 8) , this is a probably
range. P4 for viewing distance for 5 - the calculation 13 m, within the scope of this watch, the effect is
good, enough to meet daily reality application. Of course if the P3, effect is good, but it is not necessary,
and the budget will be higher.

What is the difference between P4 indoor full-color LED display and P5 indoor
full-color LED display? Which kind of full-color LED display has higher
definition and better effect? First, let's take a look at the main technical
parameters of the P4 indoor full-color LED display and P5 indoor full-color LED
display model:

Pixel colour pitch Pixel density Maximum Drive mode power Best viewing
composition brightness Average consumption distance

P4 1R1G1B 4mm 62500 ≥2400CD/㎡ 1/16 scan 580W 3~40M

dots/㎡

P5 1R1G1B 5mm 4000 dots/㎡ ≥3200CD/㎡ 1/8 scan 390W 5~60M

The LED display effect depends on the technical parameters of each model.
The information listed in the above table can clearly see the difference
between the P4 indoor full-color LED display and the P5 indoor full-color LED
display.

1. Pixel composition. Because it is an indoor technology, each pixel has a

red, green, and blue wick (outdoor screens sometimes need to increase the
brightness of the red light). The dot pitch is the basis for distinguishing
between models and directly determines the pixel resolution that a single
square meter of LED display can hold.
The P4 model's dot pitch technology has been reduced by 1mm, and the pixel
dot has increased by more than 20,000 dots. (In the field of high-definition
LED electronic screens, each indentation of the dot pitch by one unit is a
technological breakthrough.)
2. The driving method determines the brightness of the screen. At the
same time, because the P5 model has fewer pixels per square meter, the
brightness is higher than that of the P4 model. If it is semi-outdoor, or indoor
location near the window, you must choose a higher-brightness model.
There are many factors influencing power consumption. The reason why P4
consumes a lot of power is mainly determined by the characteristics of more
pixels and brightness greater than 2200cd/㎡.

3. Special summary: The P5 generation of LED display manufacturers led

the large led screen to enter the field of indoor high-definition large-screen
display. It can be said to be the leader in the high-definition field, but
according to the visual display standard, P5 is difficult to achieve the ideal
display screen of 1 square meter. Claim.
As mentioned earlier, the P4 single-square-meter resolution is 25,000 points
higher. This technological breakthrough has achieved the pursuit of a 1-
square-meter ultra-clear display effect. The LED approach is another ultra-
clear field. Only then have the ultra-clear display screens such as P3 and P2.5
later

While   Choosing
1. Viewing Distance
Starting with a pixel pitch that is as low as P1.56, depending on the viewing distance
these displays can go up to P10. The lesser the viewing distance, the smaller should be
the pixel pitch.
2. Ideal Display Size
While selecting the size of the display, keep in mind the area of your indoor space.
Large venues like convention halls or control rooms will demand a bigger size screen.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT LED VIDEO WALL CONTROLLER

How is the content displayed?

Another example of why content is king– it effects which LED controller is best for your
video wall. There are generally two types of methods for displaying content on LED
video walls due to the standard and non-standard aspect ratios and pixel pitches
allowable with direct-view LED.

Pixel for Pixel

Pixel for pixel provides the best quality image, while scaled content can
experience artifacting. If your content will be pixel for pixel, the controller specifications
should match the source resolution. (Depending on the size of your display and number
of source feeds, it might require multiple controllers.) For much larger LED displays,
where pixel counts are much larger than standard resolutions, splicing multiple images
or video segments together at standard resolutions also produces a very high-quality
final image on the LED display. Splicing requires a content playback engine that can
create a layout that is the same size as the display and splice that layout into multiple
segments of standard resolution outputs to individual controllers.

Scaled

If the LED wall resolutions are close to standard resolutions, or you’re stuck with a
standard resolution and a non-standard aspect ratio LED display, scaling may be the
easiest, most cost-effective option. Scaling and cropping content to fit into the LED may
create other considerations like image quality degradation and placement of important
data within visible areas of the display (if the LED is a non-standard aspect ratio).

Is Genlock required?

To alleviate scan/rolling lines in environments where multiple cameras or switchers are

used , Genlock inputs on the LED controller may be required to sync with the rest of the
system. This can be an issue in broadcast, live events, or house of worship
applications. Genlock ensures that the input sources are all synchronized. If your LED
display will be on camera, it’s important to note if the cameras are genlocked or not.
(Note: Genlock is not the same as Moiré Patterns, nor will it fix scan lines related to low
refresh rates.)

How many inputs are required? And/or is switching of

inputs required?
The number of inputs and ability to switch inputs is heavily dependent on your specific
application. Each controller has a specified number of inputs it can handle. If you plan
on switching inputs frequently, other considerations will need to be made.

How many controllers will be necessary?

There’s never a single answer to this question. Each LED display’s controller count is
calculated by a myriad of different factors such as:

 The resolution of the LED display

 How many individual LED panels can be controlled by a single output port on the
controller
 How many total panels (or pixels) make up the wall
 How many output ports are available on the controller
