WEEK 1: STRUCTURE AND BONDING; ACIDS AND BASES

Think About It!

ORGANIC

You’ve been through about some basic concepts and principles in your general chemistry subject.
Using the concept map below, what comes in your mind about the word “ORGANIC” (10 pts.)

Activity

Part 1. Direction: Provide what is being asked below

1. Common organic compounds that you likely have at home are: acetone (CH3COCH3) found in nail polish remover,
acetic acid (CH3COOH) found in vinegar, and isopropanol ((CH3)2CHOH) found in rubbing alcohol. Determine
the Lewis Structure for each of these household chemicals. 5 pts
Answer:

Questions:
1. How to make Lassaigne's extract (aka sodium fusion extract)? Briefly sequence the
procedure using the sequence diagram below. 20 pts

Take a small piece of dry sodium in a fusion tube.

Heat the tube slightly on a Bunsen burner so that the sodium melts to a shining
globule.
Add a pinch of the organic compound.

Heat it slowly to start with so that the compound reacts with sodium
metal.
Now heat the tube strongly till it becomes red hot.

Plunge the red hot tube into a china dish containing distilled water.
Crush the contents with a glass rod and heat to boiling point.

Stop heating and remove the insoluble matter by filtration.

The filtrate is called Lassaigne's Extract.
