Lesson Objectives
Recognise the different processes in the rock cycle (L4c)
Describe creationism and catastrophism (L4a)

1. Use the images on next page to talk about the rock cycle in as much detail as you can.
2. Read about the two theories of earth formation and answer these questions:

Creationism Catastrophism

a. Who does not believe in creationism?

b. What could we say about rocks if they were all created at the same time?

c. What violent events could have caused the shape of the earth’s surface?

Scientific theory: Make up your own:

1. Base it on an everyday observation, e.g. “I notice that Ms Bourke has a nice voice,

maybe she can sing”

2. Make a prediction e.g. “I think that Ms Bourke will be able to sing very well ”

3. Test your theory, by asking Ms Bourke to sing. If you were right, the theory is

correct. But if it is wrong, you have to abandon your theory.

Cut these out and describe the rock cycle using the words below:

Words to use:

Rain (physical weathering) Pressure and heat Mountains formed formed by

volcanic eruptions

Transport of sediment Deposition of sediment Rocky the rock being eroded by

all three types of weathering

fossils Magma rising through rock to (heat from sun) physical

create igneous rock weathering
