Human Thermal Comfort

When a printing company attempted to print a popular issue in 1902, the inks did not settle
correctly on the pages due to the high humidity. It was necessary to curb the problem and a
young engineer developed a system that pumped air over cooled metal oils to pull moisture from
air. This invention made the air cooler and it would later be used for human comfort. This
invention was adopted by crowded and entertainment spaces which were uncomfortable during
the summer due to the elevated temperatures.
Air conditioning changed the design of buildings and where people lived. Initially, air
conditioning was considered a luxury, but firms helped market it by targeting women with
commercials emphasizing the capacity to completely control the indoor climate and with air
conditioning became a necessity. Air conditioning changed where people lived as evident in the
mass migration which went to change the political map.
Long before the advent of air conditioning people already lived in the so called hot states.
Traditional forms of architecture had been developed to beat the heat. Some of them included
building with hefty materials that could absorb heat and release it during the night in the desert
southwest. Air conditioning changed the design of other building types. For example, buildings
could fill up the space with air conditioning, and offices could be housed in the inside core of the
buildings, far from any windows. In the United States, modern built environment fully relies on
air conditioning. Air conditioning is a real problem since there is great consumption of electricity
and it makes the outside world hotter due to the greenhouse emissions. Due to the stated
problems of air conditioning, Rastogi looks to design new buildings blending current aesthetics
with passive cooling strategies. These ancient cooling techniques combine to cool the
temperature of the building. Thermal standards which allow for a wider range of temperatures
within a building could save enormous amounts of energy.
