Statistic Assignment for Logistics

1. Consider the following distribution of 20 observations

Class Frequency
0.3 6
4.7 2
8.12 F3
12.5 F4
16.19 3
If the median is 9.5 find

A) The missing frequency f3 and f4

Total Frequency (N) = 20

Median= 9.5

Find missing frequency from the following data

Class Frequency
0-3 6
4-7 2
8 - 11 ?
12 - 15 ?
16 - 19 3
Total Frequency (N) = 20 and median = 9.5

Solution:
Class Frequency (f) cf
(1) (2) (6)
0-3 6 6
4-7 2 8
8 - 11 a 8+a
12 - 15 b 8+a+b
16 - 19 3 11+a+b
--- ---
n=11+a+b

1
n=20

11+a+b=20

a+b=9→ (1)

To find median class

Here, median is 9.5.

∴ The median class is 7.5-11.5.

Now,
∴L=lower boundary point of median class =7.5

∴n=Total frequency =20

∴cf=Cumulative frequency of the class preceding the median class =8

∴f=Frequency of the median class =a

 ∴c=class length of median class =4

Median M=L+n2-cff⋅c

9.5=7.5+202-(8)a⋅4

9.5-7.5=10-(8)a⋅4

2=2a⋅4

2⋅a=(2)⋅4

2a=8

2a-8=0

2a=8

2
a=8/2

a=4→(2)

Now solving this 2 equations using substitution method

a+b=9

and a=4

a+b=9→(1)

a=4→(2)

Putting a=4 in equation (1), we get

⇒a+b=9

⇒4+b=9

⇒b=9-4

⇒b=5

∴a=4 and b=5

Thus, the missing frequencies are 4 and5 respectively.

B) Find mean, variance, Standard Deviation, median and mode!

To find Mode Class

Here, maximum frequency is 6.

∴ The mode class is -0.5-3.5.

∴L=lower boundary point of mode class =-0.5

∴f1= frequency of the mode class =6

∴f0= frequency of the preceding class =0

∴f2= frequency of the succeeding class =2

To find mode class, here mode is 34.

5
∴ The mode class is 32.5-43.5.

∴L=lower boundary point of mode class =32.5

∴f1= frequency of the mode class =B

∴f0= frequency of the preceding class =A

To find median class

Here, median is 33.5.

∴ The median class is 32.5-43.5.

Now,
∴L=lower boundary point of median class =32.5

∴n=Total frequency =240

∴cf=Cumulative frequency of the class preceding the median class =20+A

Now solving this 3 equation using substitution method and

Total equations are three:-

A+B+C=210--------------------------------------------------------1

9.5A-8B-1.5C=0---------------------------------------------------2

Now use back substitution method

3. Out of 5 mathematicians and 7 statisticians a committee consisting of 2 mathematicians

and 3 statisticians is to be formed. In how many ways this can be done if:
a) There is no restriction

(5x2)*(7x3) are the number of ways with no personal restrictions

10*35=350

b) One particular statistician should be included

1 particular statistician included means out of 7 there can be 2 chosen from 6 or 15 ways,
then it would be 10*15=150 ways

c) Two particular mathematician cannot be included on the committee

2 particular mathematicians excluded leaves 3 and only 3 choices. 3*35 (if no statisticians
excluded) =105 different ways
