Shadowing is a form of training that is designed to help improve


simultaneous interpretation. However its effectiveness is not limited to this
area and with its simple method, beginner students will also gain great value
from it. Whilst listening to a flowing conversation, being able to 'shadow' the
conversation by repeating immediately afterwards is what we have called the
Shadowing learning method.

Why Shadowing?
"I want to be able to speak Japanese easily!", "I want to speak fluently!"
We believe that there are many Japanese language students who share
these desires. Another opinion that we often hear is, "I understand what people
say to me, but I can't speak myself". Shadowing acts as a bridge between
understanding what you want to say in your mind and being able to actually
say it out loud promptly and fluently. To express this differently, Shadowing is
a training method that raises ability from intellectual understanding to practical
application. This difference can be compared to knowing the theory of how to
swim and actually consciously experiencing how to move your arms and kick
your legs in the water.

Shadowing is quite an intensive learning method where you listen
NO.1 and speak at almost exactly the same time. If you practise Shadowing
for even a short period of time every day you'll be able to process
Japanese at a higher pace and soon you'll be able to practically use and apply
the learned dialogues. When learning a new language of course you'll have to
learn it's grammar and vocabulary, but generally speaking you'll soon find that
the more you learn the sooner you start forgetting things. Shadowing is a way
of training your brain to recognise certain situations and dialogues so that you
get accustomed to them and you react to them reflexively in a natural manner.
By using the Shadowing learning method, in a very short time you'll become
able to process Japanese at a higher speed and also see improvements to your
listening and reading skills.

Shadowing exercises your ability to pronounce Japanese in the same
NO.2 manner as a native Japanese person. By practising regularly, your
intonation will improve without you being consciously aware of it.
It is of course true that if you consciously exercise your intonation then you
will notice the effects. However, even without concentrating on your Japanese
intonation, significant improvements will be made..

By practicing Shadowing every day, your knowledge of vocabulary,
NO.3 expressions and conversations will gradually start to accumulate
within your mind. When expressions and words from this
accumulated knowledge appear in real life conversations, they will act as a
trigger and you will respond promptly and fluently.

targeted towards beginner and intermediate Japanese language students.

o About the content of the dialogues


Natural conversations that are heard in real life situations have been compiled
in this book. Contractions --+ t;;r etc.), idioms (proverbs such as two
birds with one stone) and other commonly used language have all been used
in the dialogues. A wide range of expressions can be found, from greetings and
practical every day language to word play and jokes. Care has also been taken to
insert dialogue between people of varying relationships e.g. between superiors
and subordinates, work colleagues, friends, classmates, teachers and students
etc. Every dialogue that has been inserted is one which you could hear and use in
everyday situations.
The dialogues have been arranged randomly, irrespective of setting or
situation. By doing this, each new dialogue has a fresh and new feeling and this is
in keeping with natural conversation whose subject and theme change frequently.

CD All the kanji in units 1-3 has furigana written above it. In units 4 and 5
furigana is only written above the kanji when it appears for the first time.

@ The long dash "-" indicates that the sound has to be lengthened.

This Shadowing practice book is a collection of short, practical discussions that


Japanese people use in everyday life. The worries of "I can't follow what Japanese people
say" ,and "I can't express what I want to say in a good way" have related solutions.
Speaking while listening (Shadowing) might be difficult in the beginning, but
please try to patiently practice over and over again. The effects of Shadowing
will appear after you keep at it and get used to it. Please don't be satisfied with
understanding the dialogue, but keep practising until you can actually use it. It's
not necessary to master all the discussions in this book. Try to find the dialogues
that fit your everyday life and the dialogues you find fun to remember and have
fun practising them.

The aim is to practise Shadowing for ten minutes per day. Shadowing is also
effective if you only practise for a short period. If you feel you are able to use
the dialogues in one section please continue to the next one. The goal is to
finish practising a unit in three months.

By looking at your own level and weak points try different ways of practising
until you find the style you like.

the dialogue out loud. For high-speed dialogue and difficult to voice expressions
please try this style first.

A style where you listen to the sound and practice by not voicing the dialogue clearly,
but in a small voice whispering to yourself. Good for getting a grasp of the intonation.

A style where you pay extra attention to the rhythm and intonation. For example,
in this book the intonation is different for" db -"and" db ,,-,II. Practise by being
conscious of these differences.

A style where you pay extra attention to the meaning of the dialogue. After
practising the prosody style thoroughly, and once proficient with the dialogue,
please shadow once rnore by imagining the situation and understanding the
meaning of the dialogue in that situation. Here the dialogue really becomes part of
your Japanese vocabulary and youlll be able to use it properly in a real life situation.
