READING / WRITING ACTIVITY

Take a look at the following article about the creation of artificial skin, and answer the
questions on the following page.

Whenever we cut or scrape ourselves, we normally

protect the injury by covering it until the skin grows
back. Severe wounds may even require surgery to
sew the wound back together. The time the body
takes to repair the injury may vary between a few
days and several weeks. But biotechnology has
recently taken giant steps in the development of a
way to accelerate the healing process: artificial
skin.

Two types of skin are currently being developed:

1. Living artificial skin, which is made from human tissue. First, the tissue is screened
genetically to check that it has no genetic abnormalities. Then, it is separated into
different layers, which are subsequently cultured on a collagen sponge for a few weeks.
The tissue is then tested to determine whether it hosts any potentially damaging micro-
organisms and/or other dangerous pathogens. If it passes the test, the tissue is frozen
and sent to the hospital or clinic, where it is kept.
When needed, the tissue is thawed and placed on a wound at the completion of a
surgical procedure. The patient's skin begins absorbing the cultured tissue, which
stimulates the secretion of fluids that accelerate the healing process, help prevent
infection, and help the body regenerate new skin.

2. Plastic artificial skin, which is made from a "smart" type of plastic. The material contains
microcapsules filled with a special healing substance. Like human skin, it heals itself.
If the plastic cracks, the microcapsules break and release the healing substance into
the damaged area. This plastic skin is still in an experimental phase and still needs
further development in order to make it possible to use it on living beings. However,
research shows that someday it may be used in the reconstruction of broken bones.
The potential is enormous.

These new treatments are a spearhead in the use of polymer-based plastics and animal-
derived treatments for wound repair and skin replacement.

TO SCRAPE: To remove the outer layer of the skin against ABNORMALITY: A condition considered not normal

UNIT 9 HANDOUT 3
READING / WRITING ACTIVITY

I. Take a look at the following article about the benefits of recycling waste water and answer the
questions on the following page.

A large amount of the water we use in our

daily lives ends up as waste water. Waste
water is the result of many of our day-to-day
activities, such as using showers, toilets and
machinery.
It is also produced by polluted rain water from urban and agricultural areas. Only a
fraction of all the water used in the Metropolitan Region every day is consumed for
uses like drinking and watering gardens. The rest is inevitably dischaged into our rivers
(Mapocho and Maipo) and then into the ocean via the sewer system.

However, it is possible to collect and reuse waste water in our homes, offices, factories
and farms. The water can be treated to the standards required for agriculture, industry
and even drinking. Waste water can be redirected prior to treatment. For example,
shower water may be directly reused for flushing toilets, or after treatment, such as
when treated sewer effluent is used to irrigate agricultural areas.

The main benefits of recycling waste water are:

1. that a smaller fraction of the potable water

produced is used for purposes other than drinking.
This lowers water supply costs -potable water is
expensive and limited- treatment costs and the
need to invest in extra infrastructure to potabilize
more water.
2. that stormwater and sewer discharges are
reduced, thereby lowering the stress on streams,
sewage systems and stormwater collectors during
wet weather.
3. that waste water used for irrigation undergoes
natural treatment lowering the nutrient loads in
waterways and reducing the pollution load in our
rivers and oceans.

However, there are financial, environmental and health considerations involved in

recycling waste water. In certain circumstances, reuse systems can be expensive, for
example the installation of pipes for recycling systems between the homes and the
sewage treatment plants in consolidated parts of the city. Furthermore, recycled water
systems must be well managed and must treat waste to a sufficient standard to ensure
there are no health and pollution risks. But the benefits often outweigh the costs and
risks: appropriate waste water recycling systems can help both our environment and
our economy.

VOCABULARY:
WASTE WATER: Water that has been used STREAM: A running course of water, usually smaller
SEWER: A usually underground system for carrying off than a river
waste water, as in a city TO UNDERGO: To experience
PRIOR TO: Before NUTRIENT LOAD: The amount of organic matter
TO FLUSH: To wash out (a toilet) by means of a sudden WATERWAY: A course of water
rush of water PIPE: A metal tube used for carrying water, gas, oil,
SEWER EFFLUENT:Liquid flowing from a sewer etc
THEREBY: Consequently FURTHERMORE: In addition
TO OUTWEIGH: To exceed in importance
