(Supplementary Material for Intermediate Module)

Due to its various meanings the verb ‘get’ is used in different structures and contexts.

get + something / someone = obtain / receive / buy / fetch / find / bring / understand
Ex.: - Did you already get the parcel?
- Where did you get such a beautiful dress?
- Can you get a job in Chile without a working visa?
- Could you get the paper for me, please?
- I couldn’t get her. She had already left.
- I didn’t get a word of what he said. He was speaking Chinese.

get + adjective = become / turn


Ex.: - Hurry up! lunch is getting cold.
- If you don’t rest, you get tired.
- I never get dressed before breakfast.
- Sue and Paul got married last week.
- Ian is getting better faster than we expected.
- They went for a walk in the forest and got lost.

get to + place = arrive


Ex.: - I usually leave my house at 7:45 and get to my office at 8:15.
- How can I get to the nearest supermarket?
- We always get to school on time.
*Exception : get home
- What time do you get home?

get in / into & get out of (a car) / get on & get off (a bus, a train, a plane)
Ex.: - They got in / into the car and drove away.
- The bus stopped and she got off.

- get on sb’s nerves : to irritate sb.
- get one’s own way : to do sth. by one’s all means and will.
- get along with sb. : to have a good relationship with sb.
- get rid of : to dispose of.
- get going : to begin, act.
- get on : to make progress, advance.
