PHOBIA (DEFINITION)
A phobia is an anxiety disorder defined by a persistent and excessive fear of
an object or situation. Phobias typically result in a rapid onset of fear and are
usually present for more than six months.

Those affected go to great lengths to avoid the situation or object, to a

degree greater than the actual danger posed. If the object or situation cannot
be avoided, they experience significant distress.

Other symptoms can include fainting, which may occur in blood or injury
phobia, and panic attacks, often found in agoraphobia. Around 75% of those
with phobias have multiple phobias.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF PHOBIAS
Phobias lies between oneself and might be triggered at certain moments.
According to American Psychiatric Association (APA), there are more than 400
phobias ranging from person to person. Most of them are not curable as they are
just a state of mind. In further pages, there are many different type of phobias
listed.
SOCIAL PHOBIA
Social anxiety disorder, also called social phobia, is a long-term and
overwhelming fear of social situations. It's a common problem that
usually starts during the teenage years. It can be very distressing and
have a big impact on your life.
In some people with social anxiety disorder,
the fear is limited to one or two particular
situations, like speaking in public or
Initiating a conversation. Others are
very anxious and afraid of any social
situation.
ENTOMOPHOBIA
Entomophobia is a specific phobia characterized by
an excessive or unrealistic fear of one or more
classes of insect, and classified as a phobia by the
DSM-5(Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental
Disorders).

More specific cases included katsaridaphobia (fear

of cockroaches), melissophobia (fear of bees),
myrmecophobia (fear of ants), arachnophobia(fear
of spiders), and lepidopterophobia(fear of moths
and butterflies). One book claims 6% of all US
inhabitants have this phobia.
CLAUSTROPHOBIA
Claustrophobia is the fear of confined spaces. It can be
triggered by many situations or stimuli, including
elevators, especially when crowded to capacity,
windowless rooms, and hotel rooms with closed doors and
sealed windows. Even bedrooms with a lock on the outside,
small cars, and tight-necked clothing can induce a
response in those with claustrophobia.
It is typically classified as an anxiety disorder , which often
results in panic attacks. The onset of claustrophobia has
been attributed to many factors, including a reduction in
the size of the amygdala(the integrative center for
emotions, emotional behavior, and motivation) and
classical conditioning.
TRYPANOPHOBIA
Trypanophobia is also known as Fear of needles, known in
medical literature as needle phobia, is the extreme fear of
medical procedures involving injections or hypodermic
needles. This can lead to avoidance of medical care,
including vaccine hesitancy.
PHASMOPHOBIA
A persistent fear of ghosts is sometimes called phasmophobia, a type
of specific phobia. It derives from the greek words "phasma" meaning
"apparition" and "phobos" meaning "fear".It is often brought about by
experiences in early childhood and causes sufferers to experience
panic attacks.
ACHLUOPHOBIA
Achluophobia is also known as fear of the dark and is a common
fear or phobia among children and, to a varying degree, adults.
A fear of the dark does not always concern darkness itself; it
can also be a fear of possible or imagined dangers concealed by
darkness.

Some degree of fear of the dark is natural, especially as a phase

of child development.

Most observers report that fear of the dark seldom

appears before the age of 2 years. When fear of the
dark reaches a degree that is severe enough to be
considered pathological.
ACROPHOBIA
Acrophobia is an extreme or irrational fear or phobia of
heights, especially when one is not particularly high up. It
belongs to a category of specific phobias, called space and
motion discomfort, that share both similar causes and options
for treatment. Most people experience a degree of natural
fear when exposed to heights, known as
the fear of falling. On the other hand,
those who have little fear of such
exposure are said to have a head
for heights.
HYDROPHOBIA
The definition of hydrophobia is an extreme fear of water
that results from rabies, a viral disease passed from animals
to humans through bites or scratches. A rabies-based fear of
water is characterized by physical symptoms that cause
difficulty swallowing. People experience muscle spasms when
they taste, see, or hear water. We can take the example
from our chapter ‘Deep Water’.
AUTOPHOBIA
Autophobia, or monophobia, is the fear of being alone or
lonely. Being alone, even in a usually comforting place like
home, can result in severe anxiety for people with this
condition. People with autophobia feel they need another
person or other people around in order to feel safe.
ATYCHIPHOBIA
Atychiphobia is known as fear of failure.Fear of failure may
be part of another mood disorder, anxiety disorder, or eating
disorder. You may also deal with atychiphobia at times
throughout your life if you’re a perfectionist.
Self-handicapping is another possibility when you have
atychiphobia. This means that you are so afraid of failing
that you actually sabotage your efforts.

Many times people’s words make

you believe that you are a failure
and just gets sick of it and just it
leads into wrong steps.
COULROPHOBIA
Coulrophobia is fear of clowns. It’s a specific phobic disorder
that causes anxiety, a racing heart, nausea and profuse
sweating. Most people can avoid clowns. Some need exposure
therapy, a type of psychotherapy, to help manage their
reactions to clowns and clown images.
CYNOPHOBIA
Cynophobia is the overwhelming fear of dogs. People with
this anxiety disorder feel intense fear and anxiety when they
think about, see or encounter a dog. In severe cases, this
phobia can cause people to avoid places where dogs might
be.
MEGALOPHOBIA
Megalophobia is a type of anxiety disorder in which a person
experiences intense fear of large objects. A person with
megalophobia experiences intense fear and anxiety when
they think of or are around large objects such as large
buildings, statues, animals and vehicles.
TRYPOPHOBIA

Trypophobia is an aversion to the sight of irregular patterns or

clusters of small holes or bumps. It is not officially recognized
as a mental disorder, but may be diagnosed as a specific
phobia if excessive fear and distress occur.
Most affected people mainly experience disgust but not fear
when they see trypophobic imagery.A minority of people
experience the same level of fear and disgust, and a few
express only disgust or fear.
