PREFACE
India faced the challenge of providing food security to millions of its people soon
after independence. The Research and Development initiatives taken by the Government
of India resulted in the ‘Green revolution’ in the late 60s and early 70s. As a result of
‘Green revolution’, India has made significant achievement through production of 228
million tonnes of food grains and gained self-sufficiency. But considering the nutritional
security, economic sustainability and high generation of employment, Horticulture
sector plays an important role. Hence, it was only in mid-80s that the Government of
India recognized the importance of Horticulture sector and thus greater emphasis was
given on this. It is a means of diversification for making agriculture more profitable
through efficient land use, optimum utilization of natural resources and creating skilled
employment for rural masses. Horticulture has invariably improved the economic status
of our farmers. It has also played a significant role in improving floriculture, plantation,
spices, medicinal, aromatic industry, fruit and vegetable production and processing,
production of quality seed and planting materials, encouraging hi-tech horticulture,
contract farming, cooperative farming, participatory approach of production and
marketing, etc. Thus, there is a growing awareness about the advantages of the
horticultural crop production and this is bound to go up with the increase in socio-
economic status of the people.
The R & D programmes in horticulture have received an impressive support from
the Eighth Five Year Plan onwards. As a result, the research infrastructure has increased
manifold with the setting up of a number of new institutes, national research centres in
several crops, important both from domestic as well as export point of view. The
establishment of educational institutions in the field of horticulture plays a pivotal role
in developing human resource, which would cater to the needs of horticulture industry.
To cater the horticulture needs of the farmers of northern Karnataka and to
develop the quality human resource in the field of horticulture, the Kittur Rani
Channamma College of Horticulture, Arabhavi was established at Arabhavi on
31.08.1994 under the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, and is presently
functioning under the University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot. The college offers
undergraduate, postgraduate and Ph.D. courses and has the admission capacity of 50
students for undergraduate, 30 students for Masters and 8 students for Ph.D. degree
programme annually excluding ICAR quota students. Students of this college have
excelled not only in curriculum but also in extracurricular activities and national level

ii
competitive examinations and the college is making continuous efforts to improve the
quality of education offered here. The ICAR has introduced the procedure of
accreditation, which help in assessing facilities available to impart the quality education
offered by the college. The college was accreditated by ICAR Peer Review committee
for a period of five years. After accreditation, the financial support of ICAR and State
Government has greatly facilitated the growth and developmental activities of the
college to a greater extent, as a result the quality of education has improved. Since the
college is due for further accreditation, the present report provides all the necessary
information about the college activities performed during last eight years.
The University Level Task Force and Steering Committee has been gratefully
acknowledged for their help, guidance and suggestions given in preparing the report.

6.5 SELF STUDY REPORT OF KRC COLLEGE OF

HORTICULTURE, ARABHAVI
Karnataka State earlier had only one Agricultural University serving the entire state with
its headquarters at Bengaluru. In 1986, the university was bifurcated to establish another
university with headquarters at Dharwad to strengthen teaching, research and extension
education activities in eight (now twelve) districts of Northern Karnataka. Further, to give
impetus to horticulture, Government of Karnataka in the year 2008 established University of
Horticultural Sciences at Bagalkot, taking into its purview the horticulture related institutes from
UAS, Bengaluru and UAS, Dharwad.
Belagavi and surrounding areas are most suited for horticultural crops with abundant
resources like water, transportation and nearby markets like Belagavi, Kolhapur, Goa, Mumbai
and Pune. But farmers were not keen to take up horticulture crops which could be due to lack of
awareness about the cultivation aspects and further this region was devoid of any premier
institution for imparting knowledge in horticulture sector.
Realizing the importance of horticulture and necessity of an institution, Government of
Karnataka passed an ordinance in August, 1994 to establish a horticulture college and thus Kittur
Rani Channamma College of Horticulture came into existence, which is the second horticultural
college in the state.
Historical Development
Kittur Rani Channamma College of Horticulture (KRCCH, Arabhavi) under University
of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad was established at Arabhavi, Gokak Taluk, Belagavi district
during the year 1994. During the year 2008, after the establishment of UHS Bagalkot, it was
brought under the jurisdiction of UHSB as one of the constituent colleges
The college is situated at a distance of 10 km from Gokak town and 75 km from Belagavi
district headquarters. Nearest Railway Station is Ghataprabha which is 8 km away from
Arabhavi and airport is located at Belagavi.
Our District
KRC College of Horticulture is located near the village Arabhavi in Gokak Taluk of
Belagavi district. The city of Belagavi is the district headquarters in North Karnataka and it
houses the second legislative building of Karnataka (Suvarna Soudha), where the Karnataka
Legislature will meet once in a year. The city is in the northwestern parts of Karnataka and lies at
the border of two states, Maharashtra and Goa (50 km from the Goa state border). It is one of the
oldest towns in the state, lying 502 km from Bangalore, 515 km from Hyderabad and 500 km
from Mumbai. Belagavi district is the biggest district of Karnataka which comprises of 1278

villages with an area of 13,415 km² and a population of around 4.8 million according to the
census of 2011. Situated near the foothills of the Sahyadri mountain range (Western Ghats) at an
altitude of about 779 m, 100 km from the Arabian Sea with the Markandeya river flowing
nearby, Belagavi exhibits swift and kaleidoscopic changes in topography, vegetation and climate.
It is bounded on the west and north by Maharashtra state, on the northeast by Bijapur district, on
the east by Bagalkot district, on the southeast by Gadag district, on the south
by Dharwad and Uttara Kannada districts and on the southwest by the state of Goa.

Gokak
Gokak is located at about 70 km from Belagavi at the confluence of two rivers,
the Ghataprabha and the Markandeya. Gokak is surrounded on one side by a range of hills and
on the other side by a vast plain of black soil. The river Ghataprabha flows from the north side of
the city and cascades down through a cleft of 167 ft, to form Gokak Falls before flowing through
the town. Since the colonial era, the hydroelectric station under the waterfall has been used to
power Gokak Mills, one of the largest manufacturers and exporters of yarn in India. The
river Markandeya, a tributary of the Ghataprabha, dashes down
through 43 ft stepwise hill plates to form Godachinamalaki Falls
Gokak is very famous for Karadantu.
Karadantu (ಕರ ) is a sweet delicacy made of edible gum
mixed with dry fruits and has a chewy texture. The other
ingredients used in its preparation are fried bengal gram flour, jaggery and seeds of marking-nut
(Semecarpus anacardium) tree.

develop skill, entrepreneurship and inculcate values. The word “Experiential” essentially means
that learning and development are achieved through personal involvement and experience,
typically in group, by observation, listening, study of theory or hypothesis, rather than on
received teaching or training. ELP is for building skills in project development and execution,
decision making individual and team co-ordination. Approach to problem solving, accounting,

6.5.7.4. Employability
During the period of students’ course work they will register for courses like students
READY including ELP (Experiential Learning Programme) and RHWE programme wherein
they will learn practical aspects of commercial horticulture, protected cultivation of high valued
crops and production of bio inputs and formulations and thus they will be made to be self-
confident by earning while learning.
More specifically they are exposed to production of high value horticultural crops and
gaining knowledge about strategies of marketing etc. The students will be taught to initiate their
own entrepreneurship and become self-employer in addition to the government jobs in both state
and central government.
The college will conduct series of lectures, personality development programmes and
seminars from prominent speakers on employment opportunities for horticulture students in the
private, public and government sector within India and abroad.
Experiential Learning Programme (ELP)
Experimental learning is a philosophy and methodology in which educators purposefully
engaged with learners in direct experience and focused reflection in order to increase knowledge,
develop skill, entrepreneurship and inculcate values. ELP is for building skills in project
development and execution, decision making individual and team co-ordination. Carefully
calibrated activities move participants to explore and discover their own potential and in process,
provide analytical skills and business acumen. Both activities and facilitation play a critical role
in enhancing team performance. ELP thus, provides the students an excellent opportunity to
develop analytical and entrepreneurial skills, and knowledge through meaningful hands on
experience confidence in their ability to design and execute project work.
Special infra-structure has been established in the form of green-houses, poly-houses,
nursery facility, post-harvest handling, processing and packing facility. Special emphasis is given
to encourage student to plan and execute new business models in the identified ELP programme
and are assessed based on their economic returns /profits realized during the programme.
Rural Horticultural Work Experience Programme (RHWEP)
Rural horticultural work experience programme (RHWEP) now included under students READY
(Rural Entrepreneurship Awareness Development Yojana) is allotted with 20 credit hours under

95
Self Study Report of KRCCH, Arabhavi

which the students are placed in rural environment for 12 weeks to get first-hand experience and
understanding of farming systems and rural life. The prime objective of this programme is to
provide an understanding of rural community, insight into socio-economic conditions of rural
families, work experience in crop production, to develop communication skills, inculcate
required confidence and competence in solving problems related to horticulture and allied
activities. It also provides an opportunity to work with individuals, groups and communities
comprising of farm men, women and youth including local leaders, local institutions and grass
root level functionaries of various development departments. Precisely, it is an opportunity to
practice in rural areas what has been learnt by the students in the college for a period of three and
half years.
After village stay, the students are also deputed for three weeks in different commercial/
business hubs related to horti-business activities like seed production industries, commercial
nurseries, processing industries etc. to understand the commercial environment of horti-business
enterprise.
Impact of ELP & RHWE
During the last five years (2013-14 to 2017-18), 293 students have successfully completed
the undergraduate programme. In the process of conducting various educational activities by
involving farming community, they were able to create awareness, motivate and facilitate
adoption of wide range of technologies in almost all the contact villages. In addition, the students
assisted in establishment of nutritional gardens, tree plantation in individual and community
holdings, soil testing and interpretation of test results, improved plant propagation techniques,
top working in fruit crops, preparation of nursery beds, plant protection, organic farming,
processing and value addition, rodent control campaign, improved methods of storage of grains
and other relevant technologies.
The students gained enough experience by organizing various educational activities such
as group meetings, method demonstrations, and initiation of result demonstrations, training
programmes, campaigns, exhibitions, preparation and use of relevant teaching aids. The exposure
of students to various developmental programmes undertaken by different departments of the
Government has enriched their knowledge in rural development. The feedback analysis revealed
that the farmers benefit from such programmes.
