TAREA 1
TERMODINÁMICA

Questionary

1. What is the difference between the classical and the statistical

approaches to thermodynamics?
(Diferencia entre termodinámica clásica y estadística)
• Classical thermodynamics concerns the relationships between bulk
properties of matter. Nothing is examined at the atomic or molecular level.
(Macroscopic)
• Statistical thermodynamics seeks to explain those bulk properties in
terms of constituent atoms. The statistical part treats the aggregation of
atoms, not the behavior of any individual atom. (Microscópico)

2. Why does a bicyclist pick up speed on a downhill road even when he

is not pedaling? Does this violate the conservation of energy principle?
In a downhill road the potential energy transforms to kinetic energy and
for that reason the bicyclist speeds up. There is no energy creation so this
not violating any conservation energy principle.

3. An office worker claims that a cup of cold coffee on his table warmed
up to 80°C by picking up energy from the surrounding air, which is at
25°C. Is there any truth to his claim? Does this process violate any
thermodynamic laws?

It is false because the coffee is cold so requires a higher calorific energy

than 25°C. Also, this is violating the second law of thermodynamics.

4. A large fraction of the thermal energy generated in the engine of a

car is rejected to the air by the radiator through the circulating water.
Should the radiator be analyzed as a closed system or as an open
system? Explain.

I think is a open system because some of the

Energy could cross the confines in form of thermal energy like in the open
systems. Also, as the text says that in a radiator is circulating water, so this
has a bulk circulating through the system.

5. Is the state of the air in an isolated room completely specified by the

temperature and the pressure? Explain.
Parra Mata Ángeles Natali. TAREA 1
TERMODINÁMICA

Yes. State of single-phase system can be specified by two independent

properties, as temperature and pressure are independent properties, and the
system is a compressible system. Other properties of the isolated room can
be obtained from Temperature, Pressure etc.
