D2: DISCUSS THE PROJECT BACKGROUND, RATIONALE, AND TARGET BENEFICIARIES

V. PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Greener UST is a month-long project that aims to address various issues on environmental
degradation in general by tackling different environmental issues and how the COVID-19 pandemic
has impacted the planet due to the rising use of disposables.

The first phase is an Online Interactive Museum that will showcase different environmental issues
and necessary information regarding the issue. Additionally, this will also cover individual steps or
changes humans could take to aid in saving the environment (e.g. Urban Gardening, Veganism,
and Responsible Consumerism).

VI. PROJECT RATIONALE

The United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released its 6th
assessment report on August 9, 2021 regarding the impacts of the changing climates (i.e. abnormal
rainfall patterns and ocean acidification). The news report states that the Pacific Island nations are
the most affected by the severe effects of climate change and are at risk of becoming uninhabitable
due to rising sea levels.

Given that report by IPCC, it is timely and important to advocate for environmental conservation. As
Thomasian student-leaders, it is one of our primary advocacies to safeguard the environment and
provide a habitable home for the future generation by lobbying for different environmental
legislations and through raising awareness in the confines of our own university. The environment
is an important area of advocacy as it is undeniable that it is degrading at a fast pace and different
global organizations are calling for everyone to create changes that will help save the planet.
Additionally, since this is also in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals
(SDGs), specifically Climate Action, it is also the role of the UST Central Student Council to form
advocacies that are in pursuit of these SDGs.

VII. TARGET BENEFICIARIES

The target beneficiaries of this project will be the Thomasian Community.
