The wind in the leaves collective choreographs poetry, movement, image and music to perform collaborative
work involving diverse artistic disciplines. The collective’s approach provides a unique view into a dialogue
amongst artists on contemporary issues where each artist collaborates, creates and shares, bringing her/his
creativity to the work in an artistic exploration rarely seen in Toronto

Our multi-disciplinary approach engages viscerally, intellectually and spiritually. We are a multi-textured
illustration of the concerns of our times and express this through diverse artistic mediums co-creating to connect
to individuals and communities in a multicultural, multiracial global community. The themes the collective works
on echo those of transnationalism, diaspora, globalization, decolonization, the abuses of power and
marginalization that results from it and wounds both individual and collective psyches, and the transformative
actions needed to change this.

We tell stories of peoples which, like leaves, become moved by winds and who have unique stories worth being
told regardless of identities, e.g., those intersections between gender, race, disabilities, immigrants, refugees,
faith groups, the poor, Indigenous and LGBQT2 peoples. Inclusivity in practice is in everything we do and we aim
to provide several ways to present performances that engage artists and communities from diverse backgrounds.
Our artists see the personal, trans-historical connection to struggle, suffering, loss and hope in relationships
within families and subordinated communities, the memories of our ancestors and bringing these to life through
our work. While presenting a ‘ challenging landscape’, the collective also explores the hope of individual and
collective struggle in the face of personal/social abandonment, every day grief tearing individuals’ away from their
identities.

the 'collective' has performed in many venues since 2010 (See support materials) and is currently conducting
community workshops with East Scarborough Storefront, North York Arts and the TD Centre for Learning and
Development in Regent Park.

What are you planning to do, and what do you want to achieve with this project? (Maximum 425 words)
Writing Tip: For Project categories, specify details of the creative process for participants by describing the collaboration,

The goal of this project is to work with community participants who wish to develop a performance piece for
sharing using diverse arts practices . Our objectives are to:

1) support the development of stories unique to the life experiences of the project participants
2) work with project participants in using diverse arts practices to tell these stories, i.e., written word, music,
dance. theatre, movement, video
3) support project participants to share the work they have done in a public presentation within their community

To do this, we will engage each community through eight (8) 3-hour workshops. Using creative writing, music
(live or recorded), dance/movement/theatre and video design, we will work with project participants to uncover
the unique relationship to storytelling through performance. the 'collective' uses poetry as its primary vehicle to
create a narrative that is then interpreted through the other disciplines. as such, we will use our approach to work
with project participants to create some type of narrative that can then be developed similarly. this would lead to
a sharing of their work with each other and with their family, friends and the public - the latter based on their
interests and comfort.

Our process begins with the written word. This sets out the narrative to build on with the other artistic elements.
Each of the 'collective's' artists have extensive experience working in multi-media formats and we will design
each session to focus on one of these disciplines to build on the story chosen by the project participants. In this
context, we will work with the participants as follows:

1) workshops 1 and 2 will focus on creating the narrative. this will be led by charles c. smith and lilia leon to guide
participants in both the writing and theatrical expression of the narrative
2) workshops 3-5 will focus on putting the narrative to music and movement. this will involve kevin a. ormsby, lilia
leon and aria evans to support participants in choreography
3) workshops 6-7 will focus on developing any video images participants will use. this will involve aria evans and
kevin a. ormsby
4) workshop 8 will bring everything together and prepare participants for rehearsing for their performance. this
will involve all of the 'collective's' resources.

Following the workshops, community participants will rehearse their finished piece in two 3 hour rehearsals in
preparing to share their work with each other and those whom they wish to invite. Once performance dates are
set, the 'collective' will work with participants to promote the event across their community.

The 'collective' is at a significant stage of its growth having received an OAC 'Access/Career Development
Grant (2015), a Toronto Arts Council Community Arts Grant (2016) and being accepted into Prologue to the
Performing Arts 2017-18 program. We have also been sponsored for performances by: the 4 Directions
(Indigenous) Festival 2017, Breaking Text (Nippising) 2017, the Jackman Humanities Institute (2016), Art
Gallery of Mississauga (2015), the Arts and Letters Club/U. of T. Scarborough/Canadian Centre for Policy
Alternatives (2014) and we have performed at Factory Theatre. all U. of T. campuses, the Guelph Jazz Festival
Colloquiem, Oakville Centre for the Arts. The 'collective' will also be sponsored by Caminos/Aluna Theatre and
Church of the Messiah (fall 2017).

We are now positioned to establish year-round performances and workshops that combine our work in schools
and communities with self-presentation and presenter requested performances. This will help us build our
aesthetic practice/repetoire, and to engage our artists in various projects, particularly in local communities. This
will enable the 'collective' to build on our unique/challenging/vibrant art form and demonstrate the abilities of the
arts to engage Indigenous, racialized, LGBQT2 and other marginalized artists and communities in work that
reflects the issues/challenges of our times.

This project will have an impact on the participants who are predominantly racialized, recent immigrants, youth
and individuals with disabilities. It will also have an impact on the organizations supporting this project by
expanding their program offerings and working with the 'collective' to support participants in creating work that
reflects on their experiences individually and in group performances. This will extend out to the communities
these participants and the supporting organizations live and work within, inviting community members to attend
the final sharing/performances and getting engaged in participatory opportunities included in these
sharings/performances.

Regarding the mentorship, the 'collective' anticipates that he will receive significant skills in project
administration, community outreach/engagement and designing and facilitating community-based workshops.
This will involve members of the 'collective' sharing their knowledge and skills with the mentoree and involving
him in all aspects of project development and delivery, including active engagement in facilitating the
participants development of their sharing/performance. In particular, the mentoree will work with the artistic
director in coordinating the overall project, including its financial aspects and fundraising.

Does this project involve artists, organizations and/or audiences/participants from one or more of
OAC's priority groups and their communities (Indigenous peoples, persons of colour, Francophones,
people 18 - 30 years old (new generation), Deaf persons and persons with disabilities, and people and
organizations located in regions across Ontario)? If yes, who, how and why? (Maximum 150 words)
Writing Tip: For Consultation/ Research and Development categories, if unknown at this stage, enter “not applicable”.

This project will involve racialized peoples and recent immigrants in Toronto's high needs areas as well as
racialized, LGBQT2, immigrants, persons with disabilities in Oakville. We anticipate reaching 80 people between
the ages of 18 - 65 (and older) with a goal of gender parity and to reflect the aforementioned representation.
These individuals will be involved as workshop participants. For the sharing performances, we anticipate
reaching 400 people for an average of 100 people per supporting organization.

We will engage project participants and their communities/audiences to provide opportunities for project
participants to create work exploring their life circumstances and presenting that to their communities. As part of
the presentation, we envision an artist talk/community discussion to further the exploration showcased in the
performances. This will allow for building community through open forums that articulate such experiences,
enabling the supporting organizations to work more effectively with project participants and their communities.

Do you have any partners, either arts-related or non-arts- related on this project? How will you work

We will work with these partners: North York Arts (NYA), East End Arts, East Scarborough Storefront and Art
House (Oakville). These arts services organizations, two located in high needs communities, provide arts
activities to immigrants and racially diverse peoples. NYA addresses the needs/interests of North York artists,
arts organizations and residents, making connections through the arts and, since 2011, has serviced over
100,000 through various programs. East End Arts (EEA) serves the east end of Toronto, an area brimming with
artists, arts projects, and a rich array of diverse communities. ArtHouse is a Halton-based charitable
organization offering free arts programs to children/youth age 7-17 and seniors, most particularly to individuals
and families who may not have the discretionary resources to access fee-related activities. Since 2009,
ArtHouse has provided more than 300 programs to over 5,400 participants at 30 locations throughout
Burlington, Milton and Oakville. East Scarborough Storefront facilitates collaboration, builds community and
supports people to learn and create together, to live healthy lives, to find meaningful work, to play and thrive.

Viability

Tell us what experience you have managing projects and project budgets. (Maximum 175 words)
Writing Tip: Focus your answer on community-engaged arts projects or related projects.

Each member of the 'collective' has experience in budget management for both projects and operations.
Particular to the 'collective', we have received grants from both the Toronto Arts Council and Ontario Arts Council
and, for each, are required to submit project final reports which have been approved by these funders. The
'collective' has also managed project budgets for performances sponsored by the University of Toronto (all three
campuses), the Jackman Humanities Institute, TD Bank, the Art Gallery of Mississauga. We are currently
engaged in working in three communities - North York, East Scarborough and Regent Park - with a grant

The 'collective' is applying to the Toronto Arts Council's Artists in Communities Program for $10,000 (deadline
February 1, 2018) for the fall sessions and we will be doing an online fundraiser with the aim of raising $2,000.
We will also convene two self-presentation events to raise $1,000 through ticket, book and refreshment sales.
There will also be a pay-what-you-can for the sharing performances of each group with the goal of reaching $250
from each group or $1,000

The 'collective' was successful in its most recent online fundraiser (2015) raising over $2000 and our self-
presentation events each average $500 in revenues.

If we are not successful in our fundraising, we will reduce the time each artist spends with each group. For
example, instead of having 3-4 artists involved in each session, we can reduce that to 2 artists per session.

Tell us about your experience generating revenue for previous projects from different sources (e.g.
fundraising, selling tickets/products, sponsorships, other grants). (Maximum 175 words)

Our fundraising is done through self-presentation focusing on ticket, book and refreshment sales. we have also
raised funds through online fundraising and will be doing so again in 2018.

How did you determine and estimate expenses including artist fees? (Maximum 150 words)
Writing Tip: Use arts service organizations or artist union rates, as applicable.

Our artist fees are based on the recommended ranges for dancers as set out by the Canadian Association of
Dance Artists. In this context, our artists are paid for prep work, meetings we have to develop our work with the
individuals involved in our program, facilitation and documenting of the workshops and enabling participants to
both promote and showcase their work.

Each artist will require 72 hours of individual preparation, 72 hours in the workshops and 24 hours in rehearsals
for the performances. We will also provide each organization involved with an honorarium of $1,000 to be shared
in their groups as determined by project participants.

We expect that each supporting organization will provide the venues for rehearsals and the final sharing
performance and that expenses for these will be limited to rentals, tech and lighting.

If applicable, provide a list of the goods or services being donated to this project (e.g. space, printing,
equipment, volunteer time). Do not include these in your budget. (Maximum 150 words)
Writing Tip: Include an estimated dollar value for donated goods and services, including the time of supporting personn

Artists in Communities and Schools
Projects
charles smith
wind in the leaves collective

Each supporting organization will provide:

1) space for rehearsals and the sharing/performance. The estimate for this is 30 hours workshops and
rehearsals and one two- hour performance. Estimates for space for the workshops and rehearsals for each
supporting organization is $600 or a total of $1,800. The sharing/performance estimate is for $500 for each for a
total of $1,500.
2) promotional materials to recruit project participants and to promote the sharing/performance. This is a minimal
cost for design, copying and dissemination estimated at $100 per supporting organization or $300 total for
participant recruitment. We estimate a similar cost for the sharing/performance as well as $100 each in volunteer
time for front-of-house for each sharing/performance for a total of $300.
3) technical assistance for each sharing/performance. We estimate that this will be $200 for each for a total of
$600.

What are your plans for publicity, marketing and outreach to your audience, participants or community?
What is your previous experience in these areas? (Maximum 225 words)
Writing Tip: For Consultation/Research and Development categories, you may enter “not applicable,” if appropriate.

The 'collective' will work with each supporting organization to promote these workshops and the
sharing/performance as follows:

1) create promotional materials using the 'collective', supporting organization and funder logos;
2) promote programs through social media, websites and email correspondence to local groups in each
community
3) create/disseminate press releases to local media
4) involve supporting organizations in outreach to recruit participants
5) invite early registrants to reach out to potential participants
6) for sharing/performances, create/disseminate promotional materials and set up registration for audience
engagement
7) work with project participants to do excerpts of their work in local community settings to attract people to the
sharing/performances

In conjunction with Humber College, Blank Space will present professional portfolio development
workshops for 30 lucky grade 12 Etobicoke-Lakeshore students. The workshops will take place in storefront
buildings (on Lakeshore Blvd. W, between Nineteenth and Twentieth Street) set to be demolished by the
college in the future. Students will utilize the empty facilities by exploring the theme of space in art while
working under the direction of three local professional artists in three mixed mediums, such as printmaking
and collage, performance and installation, and video and sound. These mediums were chosen as a result of
a survey done with Etobicoke-Lakeshore high schools because they are not traditionally offered in the
highschool curriculum. Blank Space discovered Drawing and Painting were the predominant media taught;
therefore, our goal with these workshops will be to broaden the spectrum of choice students have when
creating portfolios for universities and beginning their art careers. The workshops will end with an exhibition
at the storefront building that it took place in, during the new year.

Through a marketed call to artists on our website and Humber College, we recruited and secured
three artists who graduated from the Humber’s Visual and Digital Arts program. The artists will be mentors
for the highschool students and provide feedback and critique. Fees for the artists leading the workshops will
be paid by CARFAC standards. Our workshop program will also have 3-5 artist assistants. The assistants
will be current students in Humber’s Visual and Digital Arts program and will help on a volunteer basis.
There will be an orientation for the volunteers to meet the artists and learn about their roles and
responsibilities. The assistants will be knowledgeable in the different media being used and eager to engage
in the community. They will assist students one on one with any difficulties learning the new mediums and
assist with the set up and clean up of materials around the studio space.

Before the project can begin, Blank Space, will go to high schools in the Etobicoke-Lakeshore area at
the start of September to inform students about the portfolio development workshops. We will bring
postcards with information to hand out to the students. There will be information about the workshops and
sign up for our website on the postcards. The workshops will start the first week of October and it will run for
twelve weeks, ending the third week of December. The workshops will be held once a week on Wednesday
evenings from 4-6pm.

The workshops will benefit the students as they will be receiving excellent skills to help build their
portfolio and connect with the art community. The workshops will help them build important artistic skills and
boost confidence. The artists facilitating the workshops and the assistants will have a great influence over
the students and will create a connection with the Etobicoke-Lakeshore community. Humber can use these
workshops as a promotional tool for their Visual and Digital Arts program.

This program will only be possible with the grants we have received from the Toronto Arts Council
(TAC), Art Reach, and hopefully The Ontario Arts Council (OAC). The TAC grant that we have received is
the ‘Community Arts Project Grant’. This grant will help us have high school students learn and collaborate
in the workshops with the help of the professional artists leading it. The Art Reach grant that we have
received will help us engage and create an opportunity to help youth in the Etobicoke-Lakeshore community.
We are applying for the ‘Artists in Communities and Schools Projects’ Project grant from the OAC. Receiving
this grant will help with the costs of making this project come to fruition. We wish to do the workshops at no
cost to the students interested in them and create a community with the students and the artists and artist
assistants.

Since we have collaborated with Humber College, they have allowed us to use one of the storefront
buildings on Lakeshore Road at no cost. The buildings are standing empty, so we thought it would be a
good idea to use the space to create art and community temporarily. Humber has also donated some
supplies from the school like tables and chairs, which will allow the students to work with specific art making
supplies. We are renting cameras from Trinity Square Video for the video component of the workshops. The
printmaking and collage supplies will be purchased at Curry’s Art Supply store. We will keep track of the
amounts we are spending, so we do not go over our budget. Also, we are keeping track of all the supplies
used, so if we do end up needing more of something, we are able to get it before it has all run out.

In conclusion, Blank Space aims to introduce non-traditional mediums to grade 12 students with the hope
that they will excel and pursue these mediums later in their careers. We want to broaden the spectrum of
art skills that they have in their repertoire. The students, assistants, and artists will gain experience and
networking connections to the arts community. Additionally, we hope that with the success of the
workshops, we can produce an exhibition at the end. We hope the workshops inspire and innovate new
modes of art making by reinvesting in the future generation of artists in the Humber-Lakeshore community.
