 Egypt’s economy grew at a faster rate than expected during FY2020/21: WB
Source: Daily News Egypt, Tuesday, 11th January, 2022

Egypt’s economy grew at a faster rate than expected during fiscal year FY2020/21 due to robust consumption demand, growing
remittances, and contained inflation relative to recent history, according to the World Bank’s (WB) ‘January 2022 Global
Economic Prospects.’
“In Egypt, growth is expected to rebound to 5.5% in fiscal year 2021/22 — which ends in June 2022 — supported by external
demand from major trading partners, expanding the information and communications technology and gas extractives sectors,
and a gradual improvement in tourism,” the report read.
The report further noted that sectors exposed to the pandemic, including tourism, manufacturing, and the Suez Canal, are
recovering. The unemployment rate in Egypt remained near its lowest level since records began, and employment rose above
pre-pandemic levels, although labour participation remained low.
It also enjoyed higher oil production, with OPEC+ countries agreeing to reduce oil production cuts to zero by September 2022,
and elevated oil prices supported growth in oil exporters in the region.
Moreover, structural reforms helped boost growth forecasts prior to the pandemic to 6 percent; however, the economy has
been unable to reach this level of growth since the onset of the pandemic.
Egypt Macro Flash
Furthermore, the report highlighted that the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region experienced a strong economic recovery in
the second half of 2021, bringing output back to its pre-pandemic level in some economies. However, economic performance has been
uneven across the region due to differences in the severity and effects of the pandemic.
Growth in oil importers is also expected to strengthen to 4.6 percent in 2022, from 4.4 percent in 2021, with upgrades in Egypt and
Tunisia partly offset by weaker prospects for Morocco. In Saudi Arabia, the expansion of oil output has been accompanied by a recovery
in the non-oil sector supported by vaccine progress.
In Morocco, output is expected to expand by 3.2% in 2022, slowing from the previous year’s rebound, as agricultural output returns to
historical averages after the extraordinary performance of the primary sector in 2021.
Fiscal policy support has also been withdrawn more rapidly than expected in MENA in 2021, and particularly among oil importers, as
government expenditure to GDP is already back at 2019 levels.
Deficient demand and low inflation allowed monetary authorities to maintain low interest rates. Moreover, limited fiscal space and
better-than-expected revenue collection saw the average primary deficit narrow by almost two-thirds in 2021, helping to stabilise gross
government debt.
Meanwhile, the global economy is entering a pronounced slowdown amid fresh threats from COVID-19 variants and a rise in inflation,
debt, and income inequality that could endanger the recovery in emerging and developing economies, according to the World Bank’s
latest Global Economic Prospects report.
Global growth is also expected to decelerate markedly from 5.5% in 2021 to 4.1% in 2022 and 3.2% in 2023, as pent-up demand
dissipates and as fiscal and monetary support is unwound across the world.

 Foreign investors pump $970m into Egyptian market in 2 weeks: CBE
Source: Daily News Egypt, Tuesday, 18th January, 2022

An official source at the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) has stated that foreign investors have returned strongly to the Egyptian
market since the start of January 2022, adding that $970m have been injected into Egypt as of 16 January.
The source said, according to the Middle East News Agency, that the investments include long-term bonds and treasury bills.
They added that the Egyptian economy is managing the repercussions of the international monetary policy, and this is a new
significant boost.
They pointed out that “the balance of investments in long-term bonds exceeds the balance of short-term treasury bills.”
The Financial Stability Report recently issued by the CBE revealed that the banking sector has contributed to containing the
sudden exit of portfolio investments from the local treasury bills market thanks to the high rates of liquidity in the local
currency.
This is happening in light of the presence of a large base of local investors in addition to a surplus in net foreign assets created
during the economic reform programme.
They explained that net inflows amounted to $7.3bn during the first half of 2020, while the second half of the year witnessed a
return of foreign investors, which continued during the first half of 2021, raising their share of the total balances of treasury
bills in local currency to 22.6% in June 2021 compared to June 2020’s 7.8%.
Egypt Macro Flash
According to the report, net foreign assets recorded net inflows of $2.4bn during the first half of 2021. As a result, the
liquidity ratio in foreign currency increased in June 2021 to 73.2% compared to 70.3% in June 2020; and the ratio of
family sector deposits in foreign currency to the total non-governmental deposits in foreign currency stabilised at the
level of 69% in June 2021, as well as the ratio of loans to deposits in foreign currency at 8.68% in the same month.

The CBE indicated that this supported the Egyptian government’s ability to access global financial markets, as it issued
international bonds amounting to $3.8bn in February 2021 in three tranches, in which the subscription exceeded four
times the offering, and the high global demand for Egyptian bonds helped reduce the yield by 37.5 points per tranche,
in addition to a $5bn issuance in May 2020 right after the outbreak of the pandemic.

 Remittances from Egyptians abroad have risen to US$ 26.4 billion in 10 months
Source, Egypt Independent, Saturday, 22nd January, 2022

Remittances from Egyptians working abroad during the first ten months of 2021 reached about US$26.4 billion, an
increase of about $1.9 billion by 7.8 percent compared to the same period of 2020.
From July to October 2021 it achieved an increase of 0.7 percent (on an annual basis) to about $10.45 billion compared
to about $10.37 during 2020.
The Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt Adel Abdel-Azim said that preliminary data during October 2021
showed a decline in remittances from Egyptians working abroad slightly by 1.7 percent (on an annual basis) to reach
about $2.30 billion (compared to about $2.34 billion during October 2020).
Egyptian expatriates send back billions of dollars a year in remittances, an important source of hard currency.
The Suez Canal, remittances from Egyptians living abroad, and the tourism sector are the main sources of foreign
currency coming into the country.
Banking expert Mohamed Abdel-Aal said that the increase in remittance rates is a good gesture amid the recent
increase in the inflation rate, which has made workers abroad increase the value of their remittances as a form of
support for their families.
Egypt Macro Flash
Abdel-Aal added that the confidence of Egyptians working abroad in the stability of the economy contributed to the
increase in remittances rates.

He said he expects a rise in remittance rates during the coming period as a result of the security stability associated
with projects and the regularity of the banking sector, which encourages them to increase their remittances in the
future.

 Egyptian exports achieve highest level ever during 2021
Source, Egypt Independent, Wednesday, 19th January, 2022

Minister of Trade and Industry Nevine Gamea announced on Wednesday that Egyptian non-oil exports amounted to
US$32.128 billion for the first time in 2021, compared to $25.427 billion in 2020, a difference of $6.701 billion – a
significant increase by 26 percent.
The minister said that the unprecedented positive indicators achieved by Egyptian commodity exports last year are due
to the increase in global demand for Egyptian products in various productive sectors, as well as the great efforts made
by the Egyptian government in general and the Ministry of Trade and Industry to support all productive and export
sectors during coronavirus pandemic.
This contributed to maintaining export markets and access to new markets.
Gamea said that the approval of the new program to support exports, return burdens and pay overdue export dues to
the Export Development Fund also contributed to achieving this unprecedented jump in exports.
The state implemented measures and efforts that, in turn, helped reach these remarkable export rates, she explained.
These including restructuring the Supreme Council for Exports headed by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and
restructuring export councils, in addition to working to achieve the maximum benefit from trade offices abroad as well

as free trade and preferential agreements with a large number of countries and global economic blocs.
The minister noted that according to the report prepared by the Foreign Trade Data Repository at the General
Organization for Export and Import Control, the geographical distribution of Egyptian exports during 2021 included the
European Union at $9.153 billion, compared to $5.881 billion during the year 2020 – an increase of 56 percent.
Exports with the US reached $2.446 billion compared to $1.618 billion, an increase of 51 percent.
Other markets were $9.128 billion compared to $6.978 billion during 2020, an increase of 31 percent, and the African
continent – without Arab countries – stood at $1.853 billion, up from $1.445 billion in 2020, an increase of 28 percent.
Gamea noted that 13 export sectors achieved a significant increase in their exports during 2021.
The report indicated that the largest receiving markets for Egyptian exports during 2021 included the US, Saudi Arabia,
Turkey, Italy, the United Arab Emirates, Malta, Spain, Britain, Northern Ireland, Libya and Canada.

 IMF upgrades Egypt’s real GDP growth for 2022 to 5.6%
Source, Arab Finance, Wednesday, 26th January, 2022

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) upgraded Egypt’s real GDP growth by 0.4% in 2022 to 5.6%, compared to the
fund’s October 2021 projections, according to Petya Koeva Brooks, the IMF’s deputy director of the research
department.
Brooks noted that Egypt managed to do well amid the pandemic compared to oil-importer countries, adding that the
impact of COVID-19 on the Egyptian economy has been well managed so far.
She also pointed out that there is stronger data coming in terms of Egypt’s economic performance that drove the
revising up of its real GDP growth without giving further details.
She further noted that the Omicron variant and its impact on the economy may bring uncertainty, especially for Egypt’s
tourism sector.
It is worth noting that the World Bank also rose its projection for Egypt’s real GDP growth in 2022, according to its
global economic prospects report that was issued in January.
Accordingly, the World Bank upgraded its forecasts for Egypt’s real GDP growth to 5.5% in FY 2021/2022 while
maintaining the country’s outlook for FY 2022/2023 at the same rate of 5.5%.
