Calculation of Traverse area

Problem 1) find the area of closed traverse having following data.

Side Latitude Departure

AB + 225.5 + 120.5
BC - 245 + 210.0
CD - 150 - 110.5
DA 170 - 220
Answer :

The consecutive co ordinates are arranged in independent co ordinates form as follows.

Consecutive co ordinates Independent co ordinates

Station side
Latitude ( y) Departure ( x ) Latitude ( y) Departure ( x )
A + 200 + 100
B AB + 225.5 + 120.5 + 425.50 +220.50
C BC - 245.0 + 210.0 + 180.50 + 430.50
D CD -150.5 -110.5 +30.0 + 320.00
A DA + 170.0 -220 +200.0 + 100.00

Finding Independent co-ordinates of all stations ( reference from origin ) :

i) Assuming independent co ordinates of station A as,

Latitude = + 200.00 and departure = + 100
ii) Station B :-
Latitude = 200.00 + 225.5 = + 425.50
Departure = 100.00 + 120.5 = + 220.50
iii) Station C :-
Latitude = 150.50 + 30 = + 180.50
Departure = 100.00 + 220 + 110.5 = + 430.50

iv) Station D :-
Latitude = 200 – 170 = + 30
Departure = 100 + 220 = 320

Thus the independent co ordinates of all stations become positive ( i.e. they comes to 1st quadrant )
The coordinates now arrange in determinant form as follows.

∑ 𝑃 = 200.0 𝑥 220.50 + 425.50 𝑥 430.5 + 180.5 𝑥 320 + 30 𝑥 100

= 288037.75
∑ 𝑄 = 100.00 𝑥 425. .50 + 220 .50 𝑥 180.5 + 430.5 𝑥 30.0 + 320 𝑥 200.00
= 159265.25

Required area = 1⁄2 ( ∑ 𝑃 − ∑ 𝑄 ) = 1⁄2 ( 288037.75 – 159265.25 )

= 64386.25 𝑚 2

Problem 2) find the area of closed traverse having following data.

Side Latitude Departure

AB 214.80 124.00
BC - 245.10 205.70
CD - 155.90 - 90
DA 186.20 - 239.70
Answer :

The consecutive co ordinates are arranged in independent co ordinates form as follows.

Consecutive co ordinates Independent co ordinates

Station side
Latitude ( y) Departure ( x ) Latitude ( y) Departure ( x )
A + 200 + 100
B AB + 225.5 + 120.5 + 425.50 +220.50

Finding Independent co-ordinates of all stations ( reference from origin ) :

i) Assuming independent co ordinates of station A as,

Latitude = + 200.00 and departure = + 100
ii) Station B :-
Latitude = 200.00 + 214.80 = + 414.80
Departure = 100.00 + 124 = + 224
iii) Station C :-
Latitude = 13.80 + 155.90 = + 169.70
Departure = 100.00 + 239.70 + 90.00 = 429.70
iv) Station D :-
Latitude = 200 – 186.20 = + 30.80
Departure = 100 + 239.70 = 339.70

Thus the independent co ordinates of all stations become positive ( i.e. they comes to 1st quadrant )
The coordinates now arrange in determinant form as follows.

∑ 𝑃 = (200 𝑥 224.0 ) + ( 414.80 𝑥 429.70 ) + ( 169.70 𝑥 339.70 ) + ( 13.80 𝑥 100)

= 282066 𝑚 2
∑ 𝑄 = (100 𝑥 414.80) + ( 224.80 𝑥 169.70 ) + ( 429.70 𝑥 13.80 ) + ( 339.70 𝑥 200 )
= 153362 𝑚 2
Required area = 1⁄2 ( ∑ 𝑃 − ∑ 𝑄 ) = 1⁄2 ( 282066 − 153362)

= 64351.995 𝑚 2
