In this lesson you will be able to practice further what you


have learned about Microsoft Paint.
You will make simple drawings using lines and shapes. You
will also use colors on different parts of your drawings.

The Paint Window consists of the following parts.

Quick Access Toolbar File Tab Ribbon

Status Bar Drawing Area

File Tab
This button shows the File menu. This menu contains
commands that let you create, open, save, and print drawings.

Quick Access Toolbar


This toolbar shows the buttons for commands that are used
the most. These include the Save button, the Undo button, and
the Redo button.

Ribbon
This displays all the tools, commands, and options that you
can use for your drawing. There are two ribbon tabs on the
Paint window.
The Home tab has the different tools you can use to draw.
The View tab contains options or commands for how the
drawing area appears on the screen. It also contains options for
what tools appear on the Paint window.

Drawing Area
This is the white space on the Paint Window. It appears like
a piece of paper on which you can draw.

Status Bar
This is the bar at the bottom of the Paint window. It shows
the size of the drawing area and the current location of the
mouse pointer.
It also contains the Zoom Slider, which you can use to zoom
in or out of your drawing.

Simple Drawing Tools


You have learned that the Home ribbon tab contains the
different tools that you can use to draw. You can use tools like
the Line tool and the Curve tool from the Shapes group.

Line Tool
The Line tool allows you to create straight lines.

To use the Line tool, select it from the Shapes group. Click
and while holding the left mouse button, drag the mouse
pointer on the drawing area to draw a line.

When you select the Line tool, the pointer changes into a crosshair
( + ) when you move it to the drawing area.

Curve Tool
The Curve tool is used to draw curved lines.

Select the Curve tool from the Shapes group, then follow these
steps.

1. Click and while holding the left mouse button, drag the mouse
pointer on the drawing area. You will form a straight line.
2. Click and hold any part of the line. Drag it in any direction to form
a bend on the line.

You can also click anywhere outside the line. This will cause the line
to bend in that direction. You can do this up to two times.
3. After you have bent the line twice, the curve will be formed.
4. After the curve has been formed, release the left mouse button.
Notice also that the mouse pointer changes to a four-headed arrow
pointer. This means that you will not be able to change the curve
anymore.

5. You can resize the curve. Do this by holding the left mouse button
then dragging any of the little squares that surround the curve, as
shown above. You can also change its place by holding the button then
dragging the image to your desired space in the drawing area.

Using the Different Shape Tools


Do you still remember how to draw different shapes? You can use
the Shape tools under the Shapes group.
To create a shape, select a shape from the Shapes group. The
pointer changes into a crosshair when you move it to the drawing area.
Click and while holding the button, drag the mouse pointer on the
drawing area to draw the shape.

Let Us Try
Do the following activity. Follow each step.

1.Open Paint on your computer.


2. Draw a rectangle using the Line tool.
3. Draw any shape in another part of the drawing area. Use the Curve
tool to do this.
4. Under the Shapes group, click a shape that you want to draw. Draw
this shape in another part of the drawing area.
5. Ask the help of your teacher in saving your work.

Freehand Drawing Tools


Freehand drawings are drawings that you make without using
special tools in Paint. You can use the Pencil tool and the Rubber tool
to do freehand drawings.

Pencil Tool
The Pencil tool acts just like a real pencil. It lets you draw based on
where you drag the mouse pointer. It is found under the Tools group.

To use the Pencil tool, click the Pencil icon in the Tools group on the
Home ribbon. Selecting this tool changes the mouse pointer into a
pencil icon when moved to the drawing area.

To draw an object, click and hold the left mouse button, then drag
the pencil pointer on the drawing area. Release the left mouse button
once you are done drawing the object.

Rubber Tool
When you make a mistake or if you want to make changes to your
drawing, you may erase some or all parts of your drawing, you may
erase some or all parts of your drawing using Rubber tool, which is also
found in the Tools group.

To use the Rubber tool, click its icon under the Tools group. The
mouse pointer then changes into a small box pointer when moved to
the drawing area. Click and hold the left mouse button, then drag the
small box pointer over the parts of your drawing that you wish to erase.
Release the left mouse button when you are done.

Brushes Tool
You can also use the Brushes tool to create freehand drawings. Each
type of brush under the Brushes tool makes lines that look different
from each other. The lines that appear look like you have used different
paintbrushes.
To use the Brushes tool, follow these steps.
1. On the Home ribbon, click the dropdown button under brushes. A
drop-down gallery of different types of brushes appears.

2. Click the brush style you want to use, then move the mouse
pointer to the drawing area. The appearance of the mouse
pointer will change as you move it to the drawing area. The
selected style in the image on the previous page is Airbrush.

3. Click and while holding the left mouse button, drag the mouse
pointer on the drawing area to start drawing the shape you have
selected.

4. Release the left mouse button when you are done drawing the
object.

Let Us Try
Do the following activity. Follow each step.
1. Open Paint in your computer.
2. Draw an orange fruit using the Pencil tool.
3. If needed, use the Rubber tool to erase parts of your drawing.
4. Draw another fruit of your choice. Use the Brushes tool to do this.

5. Choose the brush style that you want to use for your drawing.
6. Save your work. Ask the help of your teacher.

How to Save Paint Drawings


Paint lets you save your drawings on your computer. To do this,
follow these steps.
1. Click the File Tab.

Select Save from the File menu. The Save As dialog box should
appear.

2. Type the file name you want for your drawing in the File name
box. In the picture below, the drawing is saved with the file
name Michael Jackson.

3. Click Save. Your drawing is now saved.

How to Open a Saved Drawing in Paint


You can open a saved drawing in Paint. To do this, follow these steps.
1. Open the Paint program.
2. Click the File tab. The drop-down menu options should appear.

3. Look at the list of Recent pictures. If the file you want to open is
listed there, click its file name.

The file will open.

If the file name of the picture that you want to open is not found in
the Recent pictures list, you can do the following steps.
1. Click the File Tab and select Open.
2. The Open dialog box should appear. Choose the file you want to
open.
3. Click Open. You should be able to open the saved file.

Drawing Effects
Color Group
The Color group includes two color boxes: Color 1 and Color 2. It also
includes the Color palette. The Color palette is used to change the color
of the color boxes. To change colors, click the color box you want to
change and then click on a color in the Color palette.

Foreground Color
Foreground Color refers to the color of the lines or borders around
shapes. This is called outline color.
On selected drawings, you can change the foreground color of your
drawings using the Color 1 box and the Color palette. These are found
in the Colors group.

Know how to apply outline color to your drawings. Do the following


steps.
1.Open Paint on your computer.
2. Select the shape from the Shapes group. Then draw the up
arrow on the drawing area.

3. Click Outline. Choose from the different options that appear. For
example, click Watercolor.

4. Check if the Color 1 box is highlighted. If it is, select click the color
Red as your outline color. The outline color of your drawing
should be the same as the one below.

Background Color
Background Color refers to the color inside a shape or any enclosed
area. This is also called the fill color.
Like the foreground, you can also change the background color of
your drawings. You use the Color 2 box and the fill style of a shape to
do this. Fill styles offer the same options as the Outline styles. The
different fill styles can be found inside the Shapes group.
See how you can fill or background color to your drawings. Do these
steps.
1. Open the Paint on your computer.
2. Draw a five- point star on the drawing area.
3. Click the Color 2 box, then choose the yellow color from the Color
palette.
4. Click the Fill drop-down arrow and select crayon. You will then
see that the inside part of the star looks like it was colored with a
yellow crayon.

Let Us Try
A. Draw the following with colors. See the drawing below. Do the
steps that follow.

1. Set the colors for both Color 1 and Color 2. Choose different
colors. Click your chosen colors from the Color palette.
2. Select the appropriate tools to use to draw the straight and
curved lines in the picture.
3. Click and while holding the left mouse button, drag the mouse
pointer to draw lines with the color set for Color 1.
4. Click and while holding the right mouse button, drag the mouse
pointer to draw lines with the color set for Color 2.

To draw shapes with colored outlines and fills, follow the steps.
1. Set the colors for both Color 1 and Color 2.
2. Select any shape to draw from the Shapes group.
3. Click and while holding the left mouse button, drag the mouse
pointer to draw the shape. Color 1 will be the color of the
outline. Color 2 will be the fill color.
4. Click and while holding the right mouse button, drag the mouse
pointer to draw the shape. Color 2 will be the color of the
outline. Color 1 will be the fill color.

B. Practice drawing different objects on the drawing area. Use the


different tools in Paint that you have learned. Use the given guide
below in coloring your drawings. Save your work when you are done.

SUMMARY
 Paint lets you draw using different drawing tools on the
computer. You can choose different styles for these tools.
 You can change your drawings by resizing them or moving
them to other parts of the drawing area.
 You can save your file after you are done drawing.
 You can also open the work you have saved. Just be sure,
you remember the name of your file.

Learn More
Look at the picture below. It is easy to draw a perfect square
or circle in Paint. For a perfect circle, hold down the Shift key
while also holding the left mouse button then dragging the mouse
using the Oval tool in the Shapes group. For a perfect square,
hold down the Shift Key while holding the button then dragging
the mouse using the Rectangle tool. Thus, if you do not want to
draw free hand, you can always choose the ready-made shapes
from the Shapes group.
