“The New Art: Destroying Beauty”

Background Information for Learners

In the past lesson you have learned that throughout human history, colors,
lines and shapes has been the reflection of human life in the community,
society and the world. Group of artist who agree on general principles reflect
their artworks with world events and global trends.

It is certain that the human race have been living in an ever-changing


planet. The technological breakthrough which started from Industrial
Revolution (1800s) that zoomed in to Electronic Age (1900s), then in to the
Cyberspace Age (present). The social, political and environmental
changes also paved the way for migration across the globe. This allows
different cultures, languages, skills and even physical characteristics of
different races blend unlike before. Thus the exchange of ideas, beliefs,
values, and lifestyles continues to bring people of the world closer together.

You have already learned form your lessons in the lower years that the arts
of the earlier period had a quite set pattern regarding to the style, technique
and treatment of their subjects. But with the gradual improvement of the
world, impressionists and expressionists sent their ideas and emotions in
fearless, modern ways. These art movements were known as
impressionism, fauvism, cubism, futurism, expressionism, dadaism,
surrealism, abstract expressionism, pop art and optical art. These art
movements of the late 19th century to the 20th century were described by this
qoute “The impulse of modern art was its desire to destroy beauty” (Barnett
Newmann). Do you agree? Let us go deeper and wider to the value of modern

Activity 1 - “TikTok”
Directions: The following statements are definitions of art elements and
principles. Read the statements carefully, write “TIK” if you think the
statement is correct, and write “TOK” if not, underline the words that
make it wrong and write the correct word to make it right. Put your answers
inside the box.

1. A person cannot create an art work without using some of the


elements of arts.

2. Color is sometimes known as a moving point.

3. Knowing the elements and principles of arts enables us to


describe what an artist has done.

4. The elements of art are sort of like atoms in that both serve as


"building blocks" for creating something.

5. Lines alone cannot be used to create a three dimensional effect.

6. Shape can be geometric and organic.

7. Smaller objects look as if they are further away than larger


objects.

8. Form can be positive or negative.

9. Value is how light or dark something is.

Activity 2 - Art Attack
Directions: Now that you have the basic knowledge on the different art styles
and art movements of the Modern period, answer the following situation
through an art work. Read the situation carefully and create an artwork that
represents your answer. Place your drawings in the activity sheet. After
which, write the art style that you have used in your art works and make a
short explanation why did you use it.

Situation 1: You are a modern artist with all the knowledge on the elements
of arts and technology. A clothing line company hired you to make and
design an advertisement to be placed in a billboard. As a modern artist,
what art style would you choose to make the advertisement effective? You
can make your own brand name.

Situation #2: The owner of the clothing line company was impressed by the
design you have created for their advertisement. The company owner was so
happy with the result that he hired you again to make a painting for the
store. The company owner wanted the painting to give a sophisticated but
elegant ambiance inside the store. The company owner also wanted that the
theme of the painting would be an “everyday” subject, he also wants color
and light to the painting. As a modern artist, what art style of the 20th

Activity 4 - Art Trend


Directions: Choose a present-day issue in the Philippines that you feel needs
to be addressed. Create an artwork using the art movement “social realism”.
You can use crayons, pastels, markers or colored pencils. Place your
artwork on the space provided.
