Lesson 1 Impressionism and Post-Impressionism
Impressionism is perhaps the most important movement in the whole of modern painting. At
some point in the 1860s, a group of young artists decided to paint, very simply, what they saw,
thought, and felt. They weren’t interested in painting history, mythology, or the lives of great men,
and they didn’t seek perfection in visual appearances. Instead, as their name suggests, the
Impressionists tried to get down on canvas an “impression” of how a landscape, thing, or person
appeared to them at a certain moment in time. This often meant using much lighter and looser
brushwork than painters had up until that point, and painting out of doors, en plein air.

Let’s learn more about Impressionism

The term Impressionism was coined from the tittle of French
painter Claude Monet’s painting, the Impression, Soleil
levant( Impression, sunrise).
It was in 1874 when a group of artists known as the Anonymous
Society of Painters, Sculptors, Printmakers, and other organized an
art exhibition in Paris, France and launched a movement called
Impressionism. Their founding members include Claude Monet,
Edgar Degas, Camille Pissaro, and others.
Despite of the diversity of these independent artists in terms of
their painting approaches and techniques, they were unified and
appeared to contemporaries as a group.
These artists experienced various criticism and rejections from
others, because they view Impressionism as Unfinished, only has a
sketch-like appearance. Currently their works is recognized for its
embodied repudiation of established styles, its incorporation of new
ideas and technology, and primarily because of its modernity.
The French artist Eugene Delacroix were sublimely admired by
early Impressionists particularly on his use of expressive
brushstrokes, clarity of form, and presentation of optical effects of
hues. His works has a revolutionary massage. Let’s observe the
Barque of Dante of Delacroix.

Lesson 2: Modern and Contemporary Arts
Objectives:
At the end of the lesson the student should be able to:
a. Define what is mo0dern and contemporary arts?
b. identify the different medium used of the artists of modern and contemporary arts;
c. analyze the techniques and characteristics of modern and contemporary arts;
d. analyze the different kinds of movements in modern contemporary arts;
e. create an expressionism painting according to modern and contemporary arts.
Learning activity
Expressionism art shows distortion, exaggeration, primitivism, and fantasy through the vivid,
jarring violent, or dynamic application of formal elements.
Expressionism is different from the Impressionism because its goals were not to duplicate the
impression suggested by the surrounding world, rather to strongly impose the artist’s own
sensibility to his/her world’s representation.
Here are some of the movements in modern and contemporary arts.
Neo-Primitivism is a new movement or genre in art that trend in Russia
painting in the early twentieth century. Influences from the Western
avant-garde were combined in a deliberately crude way with features
derivative from the peasant art, lubki, and other aspects of Russia’s
artistic heritage.
Avant-Garde Means new and unusual or experimental ideas, especially
in the arts.
Lubki are woodblock prints that served as folk literature in graphic arts
in Russia until 1917.
Fauvism was the first of the avant-garde movement that flourished in France in the early years of
the twentieth century. It is the style of Les Fauves (French for “the wild
best”), a loose group of early twentieth- century modern artists whose works
emphasized painterly qualities and strong color over the representational or
realistic values retained by Impressionism.
Here is an example of Fauvism painting of Mikhali Fyodorovich
Larionov
Dadaism was a literary and artistic movement that originated in Europe
during the time of the horrors of Word war I. the repulsion of war brought
several artists, writers, and intellectuals together.
Here are some of the characteristics of Dadaism:
 It had only one rule: never follow any known rules
 Its art was intended to provoke an emotional reaction from the viewer
 It was nonsensical to the point of being whimsical
 There was no predominant mediums and styles in Dadaist art.
Surrealism is a cultural movement that began in the 1920s. it was noted for
its visual artworks and writings. Surrealism exhibits principles, ideals, or
practices of producing fantastic or incongruous imagery or effects in art,
literature, film, or theater by means of unnatural or irrational juxtapositions
and combinations.

Here is some artist of surrealism.

Andre Breton was a French writer, poet, and anti-fascist. He is known best as the founder of
surrealism.
Karl Marx was a Russian born philosopher, economist, sociologist, journalist, and revolutionary
socialist.
Salvador Dali is a skilled Spanish draftsman best known for the striking and bizarre images in his
surrealist work. His painterly skills are often attributed to the influence of Renaissance masters.
Salvador Dali’s works usually included ants or eggs.
Max Ernst was a German painter, sculptor, graphic artist, and poet. He
was a prolific artist and a primary pioneer of the Dada and Surrealist
movement.
Social Realism is an artistic and political movement that flourished
primarily during the 1920s and 1930s. it was the time of global
economic depression. It was the era where the racial conflict was
heightened, the rise of the fascist regimes was evident in varied
countries, and there was a great optimism after the Mexican and
Russian revolutions.
Now that you already know about the modern and contemporary arts and its movements.
