Living Life in Contemporary Art
I.INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT
Contemporary Philippine Arts from the Regions is supposed to cover various art practices of the locality
where our school is situated. This aims to provide you with an appreciation of a broad range styles in the various
disciplines with consideration on their forms and origins; likewise, to engage you into integrative and interactive
approaches in studying arts. Through this subject, you will widen your knowledge and acquire the necessary creative
tools and skills needed in facing and creating better opportunities in your individual career goals and aspirations.

A.Let Us Review
Philippine art has developed from traditional up to contemporary. But do you know that there are
significant differences among the art forms found in different regions of the country and the period or time it was
established? Before colonization, Philippines has its own unique form of arts that is greatly influenced by its
geographical location. These art forms include visual arts, literature, music, theatre, dance, architecture and film. In
this activity, you will discover characteristics that can be found in any form of Philippine Arts.
Below is painting for you to reflect on. Your task is to list down your thoughts that would describe the

B.Let Us Study
According to J. Paul Getty Musuem, contemporary art is an art made and produced by artists living
today.it is distinguishable from Modern Art in historical, stylistic and cultural terms. The most common
characteristics of contemporary art revolve around their being site-specific, process-based, collaborative and
interactive. Also, contemporary art us never fixed, but open to many possibilities. Therefore, contemporary art refers
to the recent and current practice of art ranging from the 1970s up to the present. It mirrors the society and culture
of the present times. It uses a combination of different methods, materials, and the ideas that transcends the
traditional way of art making.
C.Let Us Practice
As a student, you face different challenges in life. There can be pressure from family and friends, school
works and projects, or even anxiety in this time of pandemic. These challenges hinder you to be someone you want
to be. So, you have to think of creative way of expressing your thoughts and emotions. In this activity, your task or to
express yourself through a self-portrait.
Direction: Make a self-portrait. Then write at least five sentences explaining your artwork. Do this on a clean short
bond paper. DO NOT DRAW IN THIS ACTIVITY SHEET.
D.Let Us Remember
Let Us Remember that, the development of Philippine Art comes in three major traditions. These are the Ethnic
Tradition, Spanish Colonial Tradition and the American Colonial and Contemporary Traditions. Before colonization,
the Philippines already has its indigenous art.
