Learning Task No. 1: Elements of Poetry
Directions:
Read carefully the poem entitle “The Beauty of Philippine Island” written by Elvira
Marchan.
Analyze the poem and answer the following questions.

Island of the Philippine, Abadeha’s house and forest
Plot Development:
Exposition:
In the island called the Philippines, where sea stars bloom in a shimmering
Rising Action:
When Abadeha was thirteen her mother suddenly become ill and died. Abak
father of Abadeha met a widow with two daughters. Stepmother of Abadeha
began treating Abadeha harshly. She made Abadeha work from the morning to
night, cleaning the house, fetching water from the river, cooking all the meals,
and tending the stove.
Climax:
One day the handsome son of the island chieftain saw a sarimanok. He followed it
to Abadeha’s house secret garden. The prince picked a ring from a branch and
slipped it onto his finger. That evening at home, the prince finger began to swell.
Falling Action:
By midday he had spread the news to all islands. A great number of unmarried
girls flocked to see the prince, but no one of them could remove the ring
Denouement:
Abadeha took the prince hand and gently removed the ring from his finger. The
prince was overjoyed and kissed Abadeha’s hands. Abadeha and his prince
shared their happiness and wealth with the people on the island. They enjoyed a
long life of harmony, peace, and love.
