Prof. Mary Ann Salazar Communication, Culture & Society

1. Based on your understanding, what is culture, and how does culture affect our collective identity?

➢ Comprehension culture necessitates an understanding of not only variations in language,

but also differences in knowledge, perceptions, beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors. In general,
culture refers to a population's ways of life that are carried down from generation to
generation, such as its artistic expressions, beliefs, and institutions. Our attitudes, including
our likes and dislikes, our ideas about what is good and wrong, and our behaviors are all
influenced by culture. Our identities are established as a result of various cultural influences.
Cultural practices both reflect and define group identities, whether the group is a small
subculture or a nation.

2. Analyze the statement and explain your opinion: “The media are arguably the most important form
of cultural production in our society”.

➢ We can’t dispute the fact that media plays a big role in our daily lives. As the days go by, we
extremely feel the importance of media in any aspect of life. It helps us to be aware of our
environment. Freedom of expression and the ability of communication processes to affect
societies and people's living conditions are both important aspects of the media. As with
media, culture can help to reduce corruption and boost people's knowledge and
independence of decision-making. Not only does it have a significant influence, but it helps
us to be aware and change our society. And by that, in current society, the media is
unquestionably the most important form of cultural production.

3. Explain how a group’s symbols can be considered its culture? Give a specific example.

➢ Culture is built on the foundation of symbols. In the context of a symbol, it is an object, a

term, or an action that stands for something else that has no culturally recognized natural
relationship to it. It is through cultural symbolism that one can arrange and base all they do
throughout their lives. For example, in my religion, we have a flag that represents the
independent Iglesia ni Cristo church. The flag is a tricolor with a golden menorah at its center.
When we see the flag the first thing we think is about my religion which is Iglesia ni Cristo.

On our religion our culture one of our cultures is before we are officially called as a member
of Iglesia ni Cristo, we must understand and obey the Iglesia Ni Cristo bible and 25 Doktrina
ng Iglesia Ni Cristo. And then we have what we call “Bautismo” which means baptism. The
church believes that baptism is done by immersion baptism or Believer's baptism by adults
in water and that people must be baptized in the Iglesia ni Cristo to become disciples of
Jesus Christ.

4. Describe how our values and beliefs influence how we live our lives.

➢ Our life is built on the foundation of our values and beliefs. They have an impact on our
choices and determine the course of our life. This would have an impact on the choices we
make in our relationships, employment, and other activities because what we believe and
feel has an impact on the quality of our work, as well as the quality of all our relationships.
Despite our want to believe that our perceptions are based on facts, our perceptions are
guided by our beliefs. We are a huge part of who we are because of our beliefs. They could
be moral, cultural, or spiritual. Because beliefs define who we are and how we live, they are
important.
